Fabric yo-yos bloom brightly in a basket on this vintage-feeling quilt block by Irma Dempsey of Indianapolis, Indiana. Irma, who’s been entering needlework in art fairs for more than 30 years, suggests that the design would work especially well on an accent pillow. If you never saw a purple cow, why not quilt one? That’s what Elizabeth Sylvan of Florence, Massachusetts, did with this whimsical Purple Cow quilt block. Prefer a less flamboyant bovine? Just switch to more traditional colors. Click here for the printable pattern and craft tutorial of this contest-winning quilt block.

Marie Minaudier of St. Claude, Manitoba, designed this quilt block as a tribute to the wheat fields that surround her home on the prairie. Wheat is often used as a symbol of prosperity or blessing, and this Harvest Time design would work well as part of a table runner, wall hanging or quilt. I was contacted in early November by a representative from your magazine who said that I was one of the runner-ups. She said that I would be contacted with information about my prize, and that although only the winning blocks would be included in the magazine, all of the winning and runner-up quilt blocks would be posted online. I have not received any more information, and now only the winning blocks were posted. Selfishly, I was looking forward to my work being recognized also. Please let me know what is happening with this.
