Create romantic votives for your home in time for Valentine’s Day.
Materials
- Pattern (below)
- Oven-bake clay—Sculpey Premo Translucent #5310, Sculpey Premo Translucent Pearl #5101 and Sculpey III Light Pink Pearl #1102
- Clay roller
- 1/2-inch-high heart clay cutter
- Background rubber stamp—small vine or heart design (optional)
- Craft knife
- Jacquard Pearl Ex Powdered Pigment—Interference Violet #673 (optional)
- Small flat paintbrush
- Parchment-lined baking sheet
- Toothpick
- Gem-Tac Glue
- Satin glaze (Sandy used Sculpey Satin Glaze)
- Seven clear seed beads
- Ruler
- Votive or tea light candle
Instructions
PREPARATION:
- Download and print Craft Pattern
- Clean glass votive holder with glass cleaner. Let dry.
- Following manufacturer’s instructions, spray entire votive holder with frost spray. Let dry.
- Trace fan pattern onto tracing paper. Cut out shape.
CLAY:
- Condition all clay before cutting or shaping it.
FAN:
- Mix a quarter of a block of white pearl clay with half a block of translucent clay.
- Use clay roller to roll mixed clay to a 1/8-inch-thick sheet.
- Stamp surface of clay sheet with background stamp if desired.
- Place fan pattern on top of clay sheet. Use craft knife to cut out shape.
- Use toothpick to make small dots on fan where shown on pattern. Remove pattern.
- Use heart cutter to cut seven hearts from fan where shown on pattern. Discard heart cutouts.
- Gently pinch lower edge of fan to give it shape and dimension.
- Place fan on parchment-lined baking sheet.
PINK HEARTS:
- Mix half a block of pink pearl clay with half a block of translucent clay.
- Use clay roller to roll mixed clay to a 1/8-inch-thick sheet.
- Stamp surface of clay sheet with background stamp if desired.
- Use heart cutter to cut 21 hearts from clay sheet.
- Place heart shapes on parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cut two 4-inch-long x 1/4-inch-wide strips from clay sheet.
- Place one strip over bottom of fan. Position ends as shown in photo at left. Use craft knife to cut a “V” from each end of strip.
- Fold remaining strip to make a bow. Press bow centered onto bottom of fan.
- Cut a 1/4-inch square of clay. Press square on center of bow.
Finishing:
- Use paintbrush to apply pigment powder to all clay pieces if desired.
- Bake clay pieces following manufacturer’s instructions. Let cool.
ASSEMBLY:
- Glue 18 hearts randomly to three sides of votive holder, letting each side dry before gluing them to the remaining sides. Let dry.
- Glue fan to fourth side of votive holder as shown in photo.
- Glue remaining three hearts around fan as shown.
- Apply satin glaze to clay pieces following manufacturer’s instructions. Let dry.
- Glue a clear bead to top of each heart cutout on fan.
- Place votive holder on its side with fan side up overnight.
- Place votive or tea light candle inside.
Finished Size: Votive holder is about 3 inches high x 3 inches across.
