Instructions

GAUGE: In afghan st, 21 sts = 4 inches and 12 rows = 3 inches. The 29 knit rows of tulip strip = 4-1/2 inches. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size but will not ruin the project.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • Ssk: Slip 2 stitches, one at a time, onto the right-hand needle as if to knit, then insert the left-hand needle into the front of these 2 stitches from the left and knit them together.
  • P2sso: Pass the 2 slipped stitches over.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. BEG AFGHAN ST STRIP: Row 1: With sport-weight yarn and afghan hk, ch 250.
  2. Row 1-Step 1: Sk 1 ch; * insert hk in next ch, draw up a lp; rep from * across row, keeping all lps on hk: count 250 lps.
  3. Row 1-Step 2: Yo, draw yarn through 1 lp; * yo, draw yarn through 2 lps; rep from * across row.
  4. Row 2-Step 1: Ch 1; * insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp; rep from * across (don’t forget end st): count 250 lps.
  5. Row 2-Step 2: Rep Row 1-Step 2.
  6. Rep Steps 1-2 of Row 2 ten more times for a total of 12 rows of afghan st.
  7. TULIP STRIP: To change to knitting needles, pick up sts as for Row 2-Step 1 of afghan st, using a knitting needle instead of the afghan hook: count 250 lps.
  8. Row 1 and all odd-numbered rows: Purl.
  9. Row 2: K 10; * k 2 tog, yo, k 1, yo, k 2 tog, k 1, ssk, yo, k 1, yo, ssk, k 9; rep from * 11 more times.
  10. Row 4: K 9; * k 2 tog, yo, k 2, yo, k 2 tog, k 1, ssk, yo, k 2, yo, ssk, k 7; rep from * 11 more times; k 1.

  20. Row 24: K 11; * yo, [k 2 tog] twice, yo, k 1, yo, [ssk] twice, yo, k 11; rep from * 11  more times, ending the last rep with k 10 instead of k 11.
  21. Row 26: K 11; * yo, sl 2, k 1, p2sso, yo, k 3, yo, sl 2, k 1, p2sso, yo, k 11; rep from * 11  more times, ending the last rep with k 10 instead of k 11.
  22. Row 28: Knit.
  23. Row 29: Purl.
  24. NEXT AFGHAN ST STRIP: K 1 row, using the afghan hk like a knitting needle. Rep the instructions for beg afghan st strip, beginning with Row 1-Step 2.
  25. When 12 rows of afghan st have been completed, rep the 29 rows of tulip strip. Continue to alternate afghan st and tulip strips as established until there are seven tulip strips and eight afghan st strips.
  26. Final row: * Insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp and immediately pull this lp through lp on hk; rep from * across until 1 lp remains. Fasten off. Use tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.
  27. EDGING: With RS up and the tulips pointing upward, use size 7 steel crochet hk to join crochet cotton with a sl st in the upper right-hand corner of afghan.
  28. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), work 2 dcs in corner st; * work 3 dcs in every other st across top edge of afghan; work 3 dcs in corner st; work 3 dcs in the end of each afghan st row and 3 dcs in every third row of a tulip strip down left side of afghan; work 3 dcs in corner st; rep from * across bottom and right edge of afghan; sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  29. Rnd 2: Sl st in next dc, (ch 1, sc) in same dc as sl st; * ch 5, sc in center dc of next 3-dc group; rep from * around; sl st in beg sc.
  30. Rnd 3: Sl st into ch-5 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs in same ch-5 sp; work 3 dcs in each ch-5 sp and (3 dcs, ch 1, 3 dcs) in each corner ch-5 sp around; sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  31. Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2, except in each corner ch 7. Fasten off. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Including the trim, af-ghan is about 49-1/2 inches wide x 57-1/2 inches long.
