GAUGE: Knitting as directed, 22 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. With yellow, cast on 108 sts.
  2. BACK: Skirt Row 1: K across row: 108 sts.
  3. Row 2 (RS): K 4, * sl 1 purlwise, k 8; repeat from * across to last 4 sts, k 4: 108 sts.
  4. Row 3: P across row: 108 sts.
  5. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until piece measures 10 in. or desired length of skirt, ending with a WS row.
  6. Fasten off yellow.
  7. Bodice Row 1: Attach white. * K 4, sl 1 purlwise, [k2tog] four times; repeat from * across to last 5 sts, sl 1 purlwise, k 4: 64 sts.
  8. Row 2: P across row: 64 sts.
  9. Row 3: * K 4, sl 1 purlwise; repeat from * across to last 4 sts, k 4: 64 sts.
  10. Row 4: P across row: 64 sts.
  11. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until bodice measures 3 in., ending with a WS row.

  22. Neck Shaping: Work across first 27 sts in established pattern. Drop yarn.
  23. Attach a second strand of matching yarn and bind off next (center) 30 sts.
  24. Work across last 27 sts in established pattern.
  25. P across last 27 sts. Fasten off.
  26. P across first 27 sts. Fasten off.
  27. FRONT: Work the same as for back until sleeve measures 3 in.
  28. Neck shaping: Work across first 30 sts in established pattern. Drop yarn.
  29. Attach a second strand of matching yarn and bind off next (center) 24 sts.
  30. Work across last 30 sts in established pattern.
  31. Working both sides separately at the same time, bind off 1 st at each neck edge every other row three times:27 sts remain on each side.
  32. Bid off all sts.
  33. NECK EDGE: With right sides facing and matching yarn and bind off next (center) 24 sts.
  34. Work across last 30 sts in established pattern.

  37. NECK EDGE: With right sides facing and matching yarn, sew one shoulder seam including sleeve.
  38. With RS facing, pick up 71 sts evenly around neck edge.
  39. Row 1: P across row: 71 sts.
  40. Row 2: K across row: 71 sts.
  41. Bind off.
  42. With right sides facing and matching yarn, sew side and underarm seams.
  43. Fold each sleeve to wrong side along first row of slipped stitches and sew hem in place with matching yarn.
  44. Smocking: On front and back of dress there are 12 vertical rows. With right sides facing and matching yarn, sew remaining shoulder seam including sleeve. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Dress is about 16-1/2 inches long with a chest measurement of 21 inches.
