GAUGE: When working in St st with larger needles, 4 sts and 6 rows = 1 inch.

Stitches Used: Refer to knitting abbreviations below. Before you begin, download the Stocking Chart and Key.

KNIT 1, PURL 1 RIBBING: K 1, p 1 rib

  • Row 1: * K 1, p 1, repeat from * to last st, k 1.
  • Row 2: * P 1, k 1, repeat from * to last st, p 1.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

SLIP, SLIP, KNIT (SSK): (A dec sloping to the left) With yarn in back of work, sl next st as if to knit, sl following st as if to purl, insert tip of left-hand needle into front of both slipped sts from left, then k 2 tog.

STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

CHANGING COLORS: When changing colors, cross yarns around each other on wrong side of work, passing the yarn used for the last stitch in front of the new color to prevent holes. Carry colors loosely across back of work. Use separate balls for each bear.

DIRECTIONS: With smaller needles and green, cast on 61 sts.

  1. Rows 1-10: Work in k 1, p 1 rib.
  2. Rows 11-97: Changing to larger needles, work these rows in St st from Stocking chart, beg with RS row. Each square on chart equals one stitch and each line equals a row. Starting at the bottom, read from right to left for a RS row and from left to right for a WS row, using colors listed on color key. Dec at beg and end of Rows 60 and 80 as follows: (P 1, p 2 tog), p to last 3 sts, p 2 tog, p 1: 59 sts at end of Row 60 and 57 sts at end of Row 80.
  3. Rows 98-99: Continuing with green, work in St st across.
  4. Row 100: (P 1, inc 1 in next st) twice, purl to last 4 sts, (inc 1 in next st, p 1) twice: 61 sts.
  5. HEEL SHAPING: Work short rows to shape right heel as follows: K 15, turn, p 15, turn, k 14, turn, p 14, turn, k 13, turn, p 13, turn. Continue in same manner through k 6, p 6.
  6. Next Row: Knit across.
  7. Shape left heel in same manner, beg p 15, turn, k 15, turn, p 14, turn, k 14, turn. Continue in same manner through p 6, k 6.
  8. Next 3 rows: Work in St st, beg with WS row.
  9. INSTEP SHAPING: Row 1: K 16, k 2 tog, k 25, SSK, k 16: 59 sts.
  10. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.
  11. Row 3: K 15, k 2 tog, k 25, SSK, k 15: 57 sts.
  12. Continue in same manner, decreases working out toward sides of heel and always having 1 less st at beg and end of every other row until 51 sts remain.
  13. Work in St st for 19 rows, beg with WS row.
  14. TOE SHAPING: Row 1: K 9, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 21, SSK, k 2, SSK, k 9: 47 sts.
  15. Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.
  16. Row 3: K 8, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 19, SSK, k 2, SSK, k 8: 43 sts.
  17. Continue in same manner, decreases working out toward sides of toe and always having 1 less st at beg and end and 2 fewer sts in center of every other row until 23 sts remain.
  18. Last RS Row: K 2, k 2 tog, k 2, k 2 tog, k 7, SSK, k 2, SSK, k 2: 19 sts.
  19. Cut yarn, leaving an 8-inch end. Draw yarn through remaining 19 stitches, pull tight and weave in end.
  20. FINISHING: Cut ribbon in half. Tie each piece into a bow and tack one to each bear’s front. Trim ends diagonally.
  21. Sew back and foot seam with matching colors of yarn. Weave in all ends.
  22. Hanging Loop: Using green and larger needles, cast on 5 sts. Work in St st for 5 inches. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch yarn end. Fold loop in half, right sides together, and use yarn end to stitch both ends of loop to back seam at top edge of stocking.
  23. Lining: Lay stocking on folded fabric. Cut around stocking 1/2 inch from all edges. With right sides together, machine-stitch 1/2 inch from edges, leaving top edge open.
  24. Fold top edge of lining 1-1/4 inches to wrong side. Trim to 1/2 inch from fold. With lining wrong side out, put inside stocking, positioning the folded edge of lining 1-1/4 inches from top edge of stocking and pushing lining toe down into stocking toe. Use matching thread to hand-stitch top edge in place.

FINISHED SIZE: Stocking is 26-1/2 inches long.
