GAUGE: For blue place mat, 1 V st with 1 shell and 3 rows = 1 inch. For peach place mat, 8 patterns and 9 rows = 4 inches.

SPECIAL STITCHES: Refer to crocheting/ knitting abbreviations below.

  • Shell (SH): 5 dc in next st.
  • Shell in Shell (SH in SH): 5 dc in third dc of SH.
  • V stitch (V st): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in next st.
  • V stitch in V-stitch (V st in V-st): (Dc, ch 1, dc) in ch-1 sp of next V-st.

DIRECTIONS:

BLUE MAT: With blue crochet cotton, ch 143.

  1. Row 1: (Dc, ch 1, dc) for V st in fifth ch from hk, * sk 3 chs, 5 dc in next st (SH), sk 3 chs, V st in next ch, repeat from * to last 2 chs,
  2. ending sk 1 ch, dc in last ch: 17 Shs, 18 V-sts.
  3. Row 2: Ch 4, turn, V st in first V-st, * SH in SH, V st in next V-st, repeat from * across, ending with dc in third st of turning ch.
  4. Repeat Row 2 until desired size is reached, about 12-1/2 inches.
  5. Finishing Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first dc, ch 1, sc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, * ch 3, sc in third dc of next SH, ch 3, sc in ch-1 sp of next V-st, repeat from * across row, ending with ch 1, sc in third st of turning ch.
  6. Edging Round 1: Ch 1, turn, 3 sc in first ch-1 sp (for corner); (sc in each sc) across row, 2 sc in each ch-3 sp; * 3 sc in corner, 2 sc in end of each row along the short edge *; 3 sc in corner, (sc in base of each SH or V-st, 2 sc in each ch-3 sp), along rem long edge; rep between *’s one more time, join with a sl st to top of beg sc.
  7. Edging Round 2: Ch 3, work 2 dc in base of ch-3, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, * ch 3, 2 dc in same st, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, repeat from * around place mat, ending with a sl st in base of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

PEACH MAT: With peach, ch 138.

  1. Row 1: (Sc, ch 3, 4 dc) in second ch from hk, sk 3 chs, * (sc, ch 3, 4 dc) in next ch, sk 3 chs, repeat from * to last ch, sc in last ch: 34 pattern repeats.
  2. Row 2: Ch 7, turn, sc in top of first ch-3, * ch 4, sc in top of next ch-3, repeat from * across row.
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, turn, (sc, ch 3, 4 dc) in first sc, sk ch-4 sp, * (sc, ch 3, 4 dc) in next sc, repeat from * across, ending with sc in third ch of turning ch-7.
  4. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until desired size is reached, about 12-1/2 inches. Repeat Row 2 one more time.
  5. Edging Round 1: Ch 1, turn, work 3 sc in first sc for corner, (3 sc in next ch-4 sp, sc in next sc) across first long edge; 7 sc in ch-7 corner; 2 sc in each ch sp and sc in top of each end dc of each row across short edge; 3 sc in corner st; (3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in base of next pattern st) across rem long edge; 3 sc in corner st; 3 sc in first ch-3 sp, (sc in base of each pattern st, 2 sc in each ch-3 sp) across rem short edge; join with sl st to top of first sc.
  6. Edging Round 2: Ch 3, work 2 dc in base of ch-3, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, * ch 3, 2 dc in same st, sk 2 sc, sl st in next st, repeat from * around place mat, ending with a sl st in base of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

FINISHED SIZE: Each place mat is 12-1/2 x 18 inches.
