GAUGE: Each finished block is 10 inches on each edge.

SPECIAL STITCHES: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below. Download Reverse Single CrochetFig 1b and Fig 1c before beginning.

  • 3 Tr Cluster Stitch (3 TrCl): Yo twice, insert hk in next st, draw up a lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, * yo twice, insert hk in same st, yo, draw up a lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, repeat from * once more, yo, draw through rem 4 lps.
  • Reverse single crochet (reverse sc): As in Figs. 1a-c, work left to right, inserting hk in next st to the right, then completing stitch as a regular sc.

DIRECTIONS: SUNFLOWER BLOCK (Make 20): With brown, ch 6, join with sl st to form ring.

  1. Round 1: Ch 4 (counts as tr), 15 tr in ring, join with sl st in top of beg ch-4: 16 tr. Fasten off brown. Turn.
  2. Round 2: Attach golden yellow on WS with a sl st in front lp (Fig 2 Front-Back Loop) only of any tr; working in front lps only, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in base of ch-3, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3: 32 dc. Fasten off golden yellow. Turn.
  3. Round 3: Attach bright yellow on RS with a sl st in back lp only (Fig 2 Front-Back Loop) of any dc; working in back lps only, [ch 3, yo twice, insert hk in base of ch-3, draw up a lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, yo twice, insert hk in same st, draw up a lp, (yo, draw through 2 lps) twice, yo, draw through rem 3 lps] to count as beg TrCl; ch 3, (sk next st, 3 TrCl in next st, ch 3)  around, join with sl st to top of beg TrCl: 16 TrCl. Fasten off bright yellow.
  4. Round 4: Attach green with a sl st in any ch-3 sp between clusters, ch 1, (3 sc, ch 1) in each ch-3 sp around, join with sl st in top of beg sc.
  5. Round 5: Sl st in next st of 3-sc group, ch 1, sc in base of ch-1, * ch 2, hdc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, hdc in center st of next 3-sc group, ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, (tr, ch 3, tr) in center st of next 3-sc group for corner, ch 2, dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, hdc in center st of next 3-sc group, ch 2, hdc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, sc in center st of next 3 sc group, repeat from * three more times around, omitting last sc, join with sl st in top of beg sc. Fasten off green yarn.
  6. Round 6: Attach red with sl st in any corner ch-3 sp, ch 6 (counts as dc, corner ch 3), dc in same ch-3 sp, * ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, (hdc, ch 2) in next two ch-2 sps, (sc, ch 2) in next two sps, (hdc, ch 2) in next two sps, dc in next sp, ch 2 **, (dc, ch 3, dc) in next sp for corner, repeat from * two more times, repeat from * to ** once, join with sl st in third ch of beg ch-6.
  7. Round 7: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, (ch 1, sc, ch 3, sc) in same sp for corner, ch 2, (sc, ch 2) in each ch-2 sp around, working (sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2) in each corner sp, ch 1, join with sl st in top of beg sc.
  8. Round 8: Sl st in next ch-3 sp, (ch 3, dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in same sp for corner, (ch 1, 2 dc) in each ch-2 sp around, working (ch 1, 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in each corner sp, ch 1, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  9. Round 9: Sl st in next dc and ch-3 sp (corner), (ch 6, dc) in same sp for corner, (ch 2, sk 2 dc, dc in ch-1 sp) around, working (ch 2, dc, ch 3, dc) in each corner sp, ch 2, join with sl st in third ch of beg ch-6.
  10. Round 10: Sl st in next ch-3 sp (corner), ch 1, 4 sc in corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc and each ch-2 sp around, working 4 sc in each corner sp, join with sl st in beg sc.
  11. Weave in yarn ends on all blocks.

ASSEMBLY: Hold two blocks with wrong sides together, matching sts; join red to upper right-hand corner of top block. Working in back lps only of both blocks, ch 1, then sc in each sc along sides. Join blocks together to form four horizontal rows of five blocks each. Join rows by holding two rows wrong sides together; sc rows together in back lps only, working a sc into the row of sc sts at intersection of blocks. Fasten off.

BORDER: Worked in rounds without turning.

  1. Round 1: Attach red with sl st in any sc, working in back lps only, sc in each sc around. Fasten off red.
  2. Round 2: Attach golden yellow with sl st in any sc on a side, ch 4, (sk next sc, hdc in next sc, ch 2) around, working (hdc, ch 2, hdc, ch 2) in each corner, join with sl st in second ch of beg ch-4. Fasten off golden yellow yarn.
  3. Round 3: Attach green with sl st in any ch-2 sp, ch 1, 2 sc in same sp, (ch 1, 2 sc) in each ch-2 sp around, ch 1, join with sl st in top of beg sc. Fasten off green.
  4. Round 4: Attach red with sl st in ch-1 sp before any corner, (ch-2, hdc in same sp, ch 2, 2 hdc in next ch-1 sp) for corner, ch 2, (hdc, ch 2 in each ch-1 sp) around, working [(2 hdc, ch 2) in ch-1 sp before and after corner 2 sc] for each corner, join with sl st in top of beg ch-2.
  5. Round 5: Ch 1, sc in each hdc and sp around, join with sl st in top of beg sc.
  6. Round 6: Without turning, ch 1, reverse sc (Figs. 1a-c) in each st around, join with sl st in top of beg sc. Fasten off red.
  7. Weave in all yarn ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is 44 x 54 inches.
