STITCH USED: Santa doll is worked in St st.

  • Row 1: K across row (RS)
  • Row 2: P across row (WS)
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

NOTE: All inc and dec sts are worked on K (RS) rows.

GAUGE: Working in St st: 5 sts and 6 rows = 1 inches. Slight variation in gauge will change finished sit a bit.

DIRECTIONS: 

LEG (make two): With black, cast on 18 sts.

  1. Rows 1-10: Work in St st. Change to white at end of Row 10: 18 sts.
  2. Rows 11-14: Work in St st. Change to red at end of Row 14: 18 sts.
  3. Rows 15-27: Work in St st. Place sts on stitch holder at end of Row 27: 18 sts.
  4. Repeat to make second leg.

LOWER BODY: With red and RS facing, pick up and k sts on both stitch holders: 36 sts.

  1. Row 1 (WS): P across row: 36 sts.
  2. Row 2 (RS): K 2, inc 1, k 9, inc 1, k 14, inc 1, k 9, inc 1, k 2: 40 sts.
  3. Row 3: P across row: 40 sts.
  4. Row 4: K 2, inc 1, k 10, inc 1, k 16, inc 1, k 10, inc 1, k 2: 44 sts.
  5. Row 5: P across row: 44 sts.

HEAD:

  1. Row 1: With peach, k across row: 44 sts.
  2. Row 2: P across row: 44 sts.
  3. Rows 3-20: Repeat Head Rows 1 and 2: 44 sts.
  4. Row 21: [K 2, k2tog] across row: 33 sts.
  5. Row 22: P across row: 33 sts.
  6. Row 23: [K 1, k2tog] across row: 22 sts.
  7. Row 24: P across row: 22 sts.
  8. Row 25: [K2tog] across row: 11 sts. Cut yarn, leaving a 16-inch tail of yarn.
  9. Thread yarn through sts on needle. Draw sts up tightly. Thread yarn on yarn or tapestry needle. Sew straight edges of head together and stuff head firmly. Gather sts around first row of peach. Pull yarn tight and fasten off to form neck.
  10. With right sides together and with matching yarn, sew inner seams of each leg to crotch. Turn each leg right side out. Stuff each leg firmly.
  11. With matching yarn, sew straight edges of body together, stuffing the body firmly as you sew.
  12. With red yarn, stitch across the top of each leg, stitching from front to back to flatten the top of each leg so Santa doll will sit.

FACE:

  • Thread yarn or tapestry needle with blue yarn. Knot ends together.
  • Insert needle through back of Santa’s head and out on front about 2-1/2 inches from top of head. Make a short horizontal stitch for first eye. Run needle to side to make second horizontal stitch for second eye. Insert needle through to back of head and fasten off yarn.

NOSE:

  • Starting with a 12-inch tail of peach yarn, ch 20. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail of yarn.
  • Thread yarn ends on yarn or tapestry needle. Wind the chain and sew it in a circle. Sew nose to front of Santa’s head. Insert needle to back of Santa’s head and fasten off.

ARM (make two): With red, cast on 16 sts.

  1. Rows 1-12: Work in St st: 16 sts. Fasten off red at end of Row 12.
  2. Rows 13-16: With white, work in St st: 16 sts. Fasten off white at end of Row 16.
  3. Rows 17-24: With green, work in St st: 16 sts.
  4. Row 25: [K2tog] across row: 8 sts. Fasten off, leaving a 10-inch tail of yarn.
  5. Thread yarn through sts on needle. Draw up sts tightly.
  6. With matching yarn and right sides facing, sew straight edges of arm together. Turn right side out. Stuff arm.
  7. Repeat to make second arm.
  8. With matching yarn, sew arms to opposite sides of body.

HAT: With white, cast on 44 sts.

  1. Rows 1-4: Work in St st: 44 sts. Fasten off white at end of Row 4.
  2. Rows 5-6: With red, work in St st: 44 sts.
  3. Row 7: K 1, k2tog, k across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1.
  4. Row 8: P across row.
  5. Rows 9-43: Repeat Hat Rows 7 and 8 until 8 sts remain, ending with a k row. Fasten off red at end of last row.
  6. Row 44: With white, p across row: 8 sts.
  7. Rows 45-49: Work in St st: 8 sts.
  8. Row 50: [K2tog] across row: 4 sts. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn. Thread yarn through sts on needle. Draw up sts tightly. With matching yarn, sew straight edges of white together, stuffing as you sew.
  9. With matching yarn, sew straight edges of hat together.
  10. Place hat on Santa’s head with seam in back. Pull hat down to neck in back. With white yarn, sew hat to Santa’s head, stitching in center of white band so white band rolls up and covers the stitching.

HAIR AND BEARD:

  1. Thread yarn or tapestry needle with a double strand of mohair yarn.
  2. For hair, make small overlapping knotted loop stitches along lower edge of hat. Secure each loop with an anchor stitch. See Fig. 1 below for stitch illustration.
  3. In the same way, make three rows of loop stitches across Santa’s face for beard.
  4.  Finished Size: Santa doll measures about 12 inches wide x 20 inches high.

Making the Knotted Loop Stitch: Download Knotted Loop Stitch.

  1. Bring needle up at point A. Form a small loop of yarn. Slide needle under the yarn at point A and pull until loop of yarn is desired size.
  2. Anchor the loop by inserting the needle to the back just inside the loop made and close to point A. Pull carefully to knot so loop does not slide.
  3. Continue to make knotted loop stitches as shown.
