Instructions

GAUGE: 4 dcs and 2 rows = 1 inch. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size but will not harm the project.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to the knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • Dc 2 tog: Yo, insert hk in first st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk, yo, insert hk in second st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk, yo and draw yarn through 3 lps on hk.
  • Double crochet in front post: fpdc: Yo, insert hk from front to back between next 2 sts, then working from right to left, come up from back to front between the following 2 sts, yo, draw through a lp and complete the dc as usual.
  • Double crochet in back post: bpdc: Yo, insert hk from back to front between next 2 sts, then working from right to left, come up from front to back between the following 2 sts, yo, draw through a lp and complete the dc as usual.

 DIRECTIONS:

HEAD (make 2):

  1. H-Rnd 1: With off-white, ch 4 for first dc, work 11 dcs in fourth ch from hk, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-4: count 12 dcs.
  2. H-Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 24 dcs.
  3. H-Rnd 3: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in next dc, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 36 dcs.
  4. H-Rnd 4: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 2 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 48 dcs.
  5. H-Rnd 5: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 3 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 60 dcs.
  6. H-Rnd 6: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 4 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 72 dcs.
  7. H-Rnd 7: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 5 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 84 dcs.
  8. H-Rnd 8: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 6 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 96 dcs.
  9. H-Rnd 9: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 7 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 108 dcs.
  10. H-Rnd 10: Ch 3, work 1 dc in same sp as sl st, * dc in each of next 8 dcs, work 2 dcs in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 120 dcs. Fasten off.
  11. Using matching yarn and leaving an opening for stuffing, sl st outside edges of head pieces together with wrong sides facing and edges matching. Stuff head softly and sl st opening closed.
  12. With tapestry or yarn needle, weave in all loose ends.

Eye (make 2):

  1. With black, ch 3, work 9 hdcs in third ch from hk, join with a sl st in first hdc. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn for attaching eye to head.
  2. Thread tapestry or yarn needle with tail of yarn and sew each eye onto one side of head, referring to photo at far left for position.

Mouth piece (make 4):

  1. With black, ch 2, work 5 scs in second ch from hk, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn for attaching to head.
  2. Thread tapestry or yarn needle with tail of yarn and sew each piece onto same side of head for mouth, referring to photo for position.

Nose:

  1. N-Rnd 1: With orange, ch 2 for first sc, work 3 scs in second ch from hk, place stitch marker; do not join: count 4 scs.
  2. N-Rnds 2-9: Work 2 scs in first st, sc in each remaining sc around; do not join: count 12 scs at end of N-Rnd 9.
  3. N-Rnd 10: Sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in next sc. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn to attach nose.
  4. Thread tapestry or yarn needle with tail of yarn. Sew nose onto center of same side of head.
  5. Weave in all loose ends.
  6. Use cotton balls to apply blush to cheeks where shown in photo.

HAT:

  1. HT-Rnd 1: With green, ch 75, join with a sl st in first ch to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, dc in each ch around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 75 dcs.
  2. HT-Rnds 2-10: Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), dc in each dc around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 75 dcs.
  3. HT-Rnd 11: Ch 3, * dc 2 tog, dc in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 50 dcs.
  4. HT-Rnd 12: Ch 3, dc 2 tog around to last st, dc in last st, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn. Thread tail of yarn through sts and pull up tightly to gather sts together for top of hat. Fasten off.
  5. Band: B-Rnd 1: With red sl knot on hk and wrong side of beg ch-75 of hat facing, ch 3 in any ch, dc in each ch around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 75 dcs.
  6. B-Rnds 2-6: Ch 3, * fpdc in next dc, bpdc in next dc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: Fasten off.
  7. Turn band of hat up along beginning round. Slip hat on head of snowman, pulling hat down around sides of head as shown in photo.
  8. Thread tapestry or yarn needle with red yarn and sl st hat to head, catching stitches of beginning round of band. Fasten off.
  9. Weave in all loose ends.
  10. Pom-pom: For the tie, cut a 10-inch length of red yarn. Center the tie along the 5-inch length of the 1-1/2-inch-wide cardboard strip. Working with a red and green strand of yarn as one and beginning and ending 1/4 inch from each end of strip, wrap yarn around tie and width of strip. Each wrap should be smooth but not tight and should lie against the previous wrap.
  11. Working back and forth, wrap the length of the strip with five or six layers of yarn. Carefully bend the cardboard strip in half lengthwise and pull it out without removing the tie. Knot the ends of tie with a double knot, pulling them tight so loops of yarn form a donut shape.
  12. Without cutting ends of ties, cut loops along the outermost edge of donut shape. Trim ends so pom-pom measures about 3 inches across.
  13. To attach pom-pom to top of hat, thread each end of tie onto needle and pull ends to inside of hat. Stitch ends to hat and fasten off.

SCARF:

  1. S-Row 1: With red, ch 11, dc in fourth ch from hk, dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn: count 8 dcs.
  2. S-Row 2: Dc in each dc across to last dc, dc in last dc and change to green, ch 3, turn: count 8 dcs. Fasten off red.
  3. S-Row 3: With green, dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn: count 8 dcs.
  4. S-Row 4: Dc in each dc across to last dc, dc in last dc and change to red, ch 3, turn: count 8 dcs. Fasten off green.
  5. S-Row 5: With red, dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn: count 8 dcs.
  6. S-Row 6: Dc in each dc across to last dc, dc in last dc and change to green, ch 3, turn: count 9 dcs. Fasten off red.
  7. S-Rows 7-38: Rep S-Rows 3-6. Fasten off at the end of S-Row 38.
  8. Weave in all loose ends.
  9. Fringe: Cut 10 red and eight green 4-inch pieces of yarn. Fold each in half. Starting with a red piece, use hk to draw folded end of yarn through a st at one narrow end of scarf. Pull ends of yarn through folded end and draw up to hold yarn to end of scarf.
  10. Repeat, alternating green and red yarn across both narrow ends of scarf as shown in photo. Trim ends of fringe even.

NECK PIECE:

  1. Rows 1-6: Rep S-Rows 1-6 of scarf instructions.
  2. Rows 7-28: Rep S-Rows 3-6 of scarf instructions. Fasten off at the end of Row 28.
  3. Weave in all loose ends.
  4. Finishing: Fold neck piece in half crosswise. Use needle and matching yarn to sew the short ends together to make a circle.
  5. Referring to Pillow Fig1, tie scarf in a loose overhand knot to one layer of neck piece. Flatten neck piece with ends of rows of red and green stripes matching and scarf between layers.
  6. Thread needle with red yarn. Sew top front edge of neck piece to bottom of head along front. Sew top back edge of neck piece to bottom of head along back, leaving bottom of neck piece open.
  7. Roll bottom edges of neck piece to inside. Stuff neck piece lightly and sew edges together, matching stripes and catching scarf in stitching.
  8. Weave in all loose ends.

Finished size: Including scarf, pillow measures about 23-1/2 inches high x 11 inches wide.
