Instructions

GAUGE:  Variations in gauge will change the size of the finished doily and may require a larger or smaller piece of fabric for the center, but will not ruin this project. An even gauge, however, is necessary.

DIRECTIONS:

FIRST SIDE:

First Scallop:

  1. F-Row 1: Ch 11, tr in eighth ch from hk, ch 5, sk 2 chs and sl st into beg ch: count 2 spaces.
  2. F-Row 2: Ch 4 (always counts as first tr), turn; work 10 trs in each ch-sp: count 21 trs.
  3. F-Row 3: Ch 7 (counts as first tr, ch 3), turn; tr in first tr (the one directly below the ch); [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row, ending last rep with the tr in top of turning ch-4: count 11 spaces.
  4. F-Row 4: Ch 4, turn; [work 2 trs in ch-3 sp, tr in tr] across row, ending with 3 trs in ch-7 sp.
  5. F-Row 5: Ch 7, turn; sk first tr, tr in next tr; [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row, ending last rep with a tr in top of turning ch-4: count 17 ch-3 spaces. Do not fasten off.

Second Scallop:

  1. S-Row 1: Ch 5, turn; sk first tr and tr in next tr of first scallop; ch 5, sc in next tr of first scallop, ch 3, sc in next tr of first scallop.
  2. S-Row 2: Turn; work 9 trs in first ch-5 sp and 10 trs in next ch-5 sp.
  3. S-Row 3: Ch 7, turn; tr in first tr; [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row until there are 10 spaces; * ch 3, sc in next tr of first scallop; rep from * one more time.
  4. S-Row 4: Turn; tr in next ch-3 sp, tr in next tr; [work 2 trs in next ch-3 sp, tr in next tr] across row, ending with 3 trs in ch-7 sp.
  5. S-Row 5: Ch 7, turn, mark the ch-7 sp with a safety pin; sk next tr, tr in next tr; [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row until there are 16 ch-3 spaces; ch 3, sc into next tr of first scallop: count 17 ch-3 spaces. Do not fasten off.

Pattern Scallop:

  1. P-Row 1: Ch 5, turn; tr in next tr of previous scallop; ch 5, sc in next tr of previous scallop, ch 3, sc in next tr of previous scallop.
  2. P-Row 2: Turn; work 9 trs in first ch-5 sp and 10 trs in next ch-5 sp; sc in next tr of previous scallop, ch 3, sc in next tr of previous scallop.
  3. P-Row 3: Ch 3, turn; tr in first tr, [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row until there are 10 ch-3 spaces; * ch 3, sc in next tr of previous scallop; rep from * one more time.
  4. P-Row 4: Turn; tr in next ch-3 sp, tr in next tr; [work 2 trs in next ch-3 sp, tr in next tr] across row; sc in next tr of previous scallop, ch 3, sc in next tr of previous scallop.
  5. P-Row 5: Turn; [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] across row until 16 ch-3 spaces are worked, ch 3, sc into next tr of previous scallop: count 17 ch-3 spaces. Do not fasten off.
  6. Rep Pattern Scallop six more times to complete first side of doily.

Corner Scallop: Do not turn work before beginning corner scallop.

  1. C-Row 1: Ch 5, tr in next free tr of second last scallop, ch 5, sc in next tr of same scallop, ch 3, sc in next tr of same scallop.
  2. C-Rows 2-5: Rep P-Rows 2-5.

SECOND SIDE: Rep Pattern Scallop eight times, then work Corner Scallop.

THIRD SIDE: Rep second side.

FOURTH SIDE: Rep Pattern Scallop six times, then rep P-Rows 1-4 once.

Joining-Row 5: Turn, ch 3, sl st into center ch of marked ch-7 sp, remove safety pin, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr on S-Row 4 of previous scallop, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of ch-sp at end of S-Row 3 of previous scallop, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of S-Row 2 of previous scallop, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of ch-sp on S-Row 1 of previous scallop, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of F-Row 5 (First Scallop), sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of ch-sp of F-Row 4, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of F-Row 3, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of F-Row 2, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in first ch-sp of F-Row 1, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st into center tr of F-Row 1, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in second ch-sp of F-Row 1, sk 1 tr on new scallop, tr in next tr; [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr of new scallop] across row; ch 3, sc into next tr of previous scallop.

L-Row 5: Turn, [ch 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr] 12 times; ch 3, sl st into the center ch of last
ch-7 sp on F-Row 5, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of F-Row 4, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st into top of last ch-sp of F-Row 3, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of last tr of F-Row 2, sk 1 tr, tr in next tr; ch 3, sl st in top of ch-sp of F-Row 1, sk 1 tr, tr in last st of P-Row 4. Fasten off. Use tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.

FINISHING:

  • Soak crocheted lace in water and spread out on a towel to dry. Press, using spray starch if desired.
  • Center a red fabric square behind opening of lace piece and pin in place.
  • Thread machine with white thread and set it on a short zigzag stitch. Stitch along inside edge of crocheted lace. Reinforce stitching by going over first round of stitching.
  • With scissors, snip away the excess fabric from back of work, cutting as close to machine-stitching as possible.

FINISHED SIZE: Doily is about 10-1/2 inches square.
