Instructions

GAUGE: 9 dcs and 4 rows = 2 inches.

DIRECTIONS: 

HEAD (Make 2):

  1. Head-Rnd 1: With brown, ch 18; work 3 dcs in fourth ch from hk (beg ch-3 counts as 1 dc), dc in each of next 13 chs, work 8 dcs in last ch; working in bottom lps on opposite side of same ch, dc in each of next 13 chs, work 4 dcs in same ch as first 4 dcs of rnd; join with a sl st in top of beg ch: count 8 dcs at each end and 13 dcs on each side of ch.
  2. Head-Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 scs in same st as sl st and in each of next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 9 sts, work 2 dcs in each of next 6 sts, dc in next 9 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, work 2 scs in each of next 3 sts; join with a sl st in beg sc.
  3. Head-Rnd 3: Ch 1, work 2 scs in same st as sl st and in each of next 3 sts, sc in next 10 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next 8 sts, work 2 dcs in each of next 8 sts, dc in next 8 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, work 2 scs in each of next 4 sts; join with a sl st in beg sc.
  4. Head-Rnd 4: Ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, [hdc in next st, work 2 hdcs in next st] twice, hdc in next 13 sts, sc in next st, dc in next 10 sts, [work 2 dcs in next st, dc in next st] six times, dc in next 10 sts, sc in next st, hdc in next 12 sts, [work 2 hdcs in next st, hdc in next st] three times; join with a sl st in top of beg ch.
  5. Head-Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 19 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 14 sts, [work 2 dcs in next st, dc in next st] five times, dc in next 12 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in last 20 sts; join with a sl st in top of beg ch. Fasten off after completing first head, but not after making second head.
  6. With edges even and wrong sides together, join the two heads by working 1 sc in each st around, working through both pieces with each st; end with ch 15, sl st in first sc to create a hanging loop. Fasten off.

EARS (Make 2): With brown, ch 7, work 3 dcs in fourth ch from hk (beg ch-3 counts as 1 dc), dc in next 2 chs, work 4 dcs in last ch, ch 3, sl st in third ch from hk, work 4 dcs in same ch as the last 4 dcs; working in bottom lps on opposite side of same ch, dc in next 2 chs, work 4 dcs in same ch as first 4 dcs of rnd; join with a sl st in top of beg ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

ANTLERS (Make 4): With tan, * ch 8, dc in fourth ch from hk, dc in next 3 chs, sc in last ch; rep from * two more times; ch 7, dc in fourth ch from hk, dc in next 3 chs, sc in sc at end of center branch, ch 7, dc in fourth ch from hk, dc in next 3 chs, sl st in sc at end of first branch. Fasten off. Make another antler, but do not fasten off.

With edges even and wrong sides together, join two antlers by working 1 sc in each st around, working through both pieces with each st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Repeat for next antler.

NOSE:

  1. Nose-Rnd 1: With red, ch 2, work 6 scs in second ch from hk; join with a sl st in first sc.
  2. Nose-Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in same st as sl st, work 2 dcs in each st around; join with a sl st in top of beg ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

EYES (Make 2):

  1. Eye-Rnd 1: With black, ch 2, work 6 scs in second ch from hk, changing yarn to white as you complete the last st.
  2. Eye-Rnd 2: (Sc, hdc) in next st, (hdc, dc) in next st, (dc, hdc) in next st, (hdc, sc) in next st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

FINISHING:

  1. Referring to photo for position, sew antlers to top of head on each side of hanging loop and ears to head just below antlers.
  2. Sew eyes onto face, covering top curve of Head-Rnd 1 and positioning them so the black sides touch.
  3. Sew nose onto face near bottom of Head-Rnds 2 and 3. Use tapestry needle to weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Hot pad is about 9 inches wide x 11-1/2 inches long.
