Instructions

GAUGE: Each completed granny square should measure about 9 inches square. Slight variation in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

DIRECTIONS:

GRANNY SQUARE (make 12):

  1. Round 1: With white, ch 6, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, work 2 dcs in ring, ch 3, [work 3 dcs in ring, ch 3] three times, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 dcs and 4 ch-3 corner sps.
  2. Round 2: Sl st to next ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs in same ch-3 sp, ch 2, [work (3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, ch 2] three times, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 24 dcs, 4 ch-2 sps and 4 ch-3 corner sps.
  3. Round 3: Sl st to next ch-3 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs in same ch-3 sp, ch 2, * [work 3 dcs in next ch-2 sp, ch 2] around to next ch-3 sp, work (3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs) in ch-3 sp, ch 2; repeat from * around to beginning ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  4. Rounds 4-6: Repeat Round 3: 72 dcs, 4 ch-3 corner sps and 20 ch-2 sps at end of Round 6.
  5. Round 7: Sl st to next ch-3 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs in same ch-3 sp, ch 1, * [work 3 dcs, ch 1] around to next ch-3 sp, work 3 dcs, ch 3, 3 dcs in ch-3 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around to beginning ch-3, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 84 dcs, 24 ch-1 sps and 4 ch-3 sps.
  6. Adding vertical strips: Row 1: With right side facing, join bright pink with a sl st in center ch of any corner ch-3 of a granny square, ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each ch and dc across to center ch of next corner ch-3 sp, dc in center ch of corner ch-3, turn: 31 dcs.
  7. Row 2: Ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each st across, turn: 31 dcs.
  8. Row 3: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.
  9. Repeat to add a bright pink vertical strip to eight of the granny squares.

JOINING:

  1. Referring to Diagram, lay out the completed granny squares right side up in four rows with three squares in each row, placing the granny squares with vertical strips as shown.
  2. Joining granny squares: Using tapestry or yarn needle and bright pink yarn, whipstitch bright pink edges of granny squares to center granny square in each row. See Whipstitch for stitch illustration.
  3. Horizontal strips: Row 1: With right side facing, join bright pink with a sl st in center ch of upper corner ch-3 of Row 2, ch 3 for first dc, * work 1 dc in each ch and dc across to center ch-3 of next corner, work 1 dc in center ch of ch-3 sp, work 6 dcs evenly spaced across end sts of vertical strip; repeat from * to opposite corner ch-3 sp of joined row, turn: 105 dcs.
  4. Row 2: Ch 3, work 1 dc in each st across, turn: 105 dcs.
  5. Row 3: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off.
  6. Repeat to add a bright pink horizontal strip to the top of Rows 3 and 4.
  7. Joining rows: Referring to Afghan Diagram, lay out the four rows right side up with a bright pink horizontal strip between the rows as shown.
  8. Joining blocks: Using tapestry or yarn needle and bright pink yarn, whipstitch the top edges of each bright pink strip to the bottom edge of the row above.

INNER BORDER:

  1. Round 1: With right side facing, join bright pink with a sl st in center ch of upper corner ch-3 sp of white granny square, ch 3 for first dc, work 4 more dcs in same ch, * [dc in each of next three dcs, dc in next ch] seven times, dc in next ch, work 6 dcs evenly spaced across end sts of horizontal strip, dc in next 2 chs; repeat from * to next corner, ending last repeat with [dc in each of next three dcs, dc in next ch] seven times, work 5 dcs in center ch of next corner ch-3 sp; repeat from * around, ending last repeat with [dc in each of next three dcs, dc in next ch] seven times, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  2. Round 2: Ch 3 for first dc, dc around, working 1 dc in each dc and 5 dcs in center dc of each 5-dc corner, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  3. Round 3: Repeat Round 2. Fasten off.

OUTER BORDER:

  1. Round 1: With right side facing and narrow edge at the top, join white with a sl st in center dc of upper corner 5-dc group, ch 3, work 4 more dcs in same ch-sp, ch 2, ** sk 3 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, ch 2, [sk 3 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, ch 2] twice, * [sk 3 dcs, work 3 scs in next dc, ch 2] three times, [sk 3 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, ch 2] three times, sk 4 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, [sk 3 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, ch 2] twice; repeat from * around to next corner 5-dc group, work 5 dcs in corner 5-dc group; repeat from ** around to next corner 5-dc group, ending last repeat with [sk 3 dcs, work 3 dcs in next dc, ch 2] three times, sk 2 dcs, work 5 dcs in center dc of corner 5-dc group, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  2. Round 2: Sl st to center dc of corner 5-dc group, ch 3, work four dcs in same st, ch 2, working in each ch-2 sp, work 3 dcs in each ch-sp between 3-dc groups and 3 scs in each ch-sp between 3-sc groups, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  3. Rounds 3-6: Repeat Round 2, working 3 dcs in each ch-sp above each 3-dc group in and 3 scs in each ch-sp above each 3-sc group, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off at end of Round 6.

EDGING:

  1. Round 1: With right side facing, join bright pink with a sl st in any dc, ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each st around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn.
  2. Round 2: Sl st in each dc around. Fasten off.
  3. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

LIME-GREEN FLOWERS (make 10):

  1. Round 1: With periwinkle blue, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, work 11 dcs in ring, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 dcs. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2: With right side facing, join lime green with a sl st in any dc of Round 1, * ch 8, dc in fourth ch from hk, tr in each of next three chs, dc in next ch, sk next dc of Round 1, sl st in next dc; repeat from * five more times to make six petals.
  3. Round 3: Sl st in each ch, each dc and each tr of all petals. Fasten off.

PERIWINKLE-BLUE FLOWERS (make 10):

  1. Round 1: With lime green, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, ch 3 for first dc, work 11 dcs in ring, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3: 12 dcs. Fasten off.
  2. Round 2: With right side facing, join periwinkle blue with a sl st in any dc of Round 1, * ch 8, dc in fourth ch from hk, tr in each of next three chs, dc in next ch, sk next dc of Round 1, sl st in next dc; repeat from * five more times to make six petals.
  3. Round 3: Sl st in each ch, each dc and each tr of all petals. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Using tapestry or yarn needle and bright pink yarn, hand-stitch the flowers to each corner of each white granny square, alternating the colors as shown in the photo.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan measures about 44 inches wide x 55 inches long.
