Instructions

GAUGE: 4 sc and 4 rows = 1 inch. To save time, take time to check gauge. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size but will not ruin the project.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

Directions: BACK/FLAP:

  1. Row 1: With Yellow yarn, ch 33 (lp on hk does not count as a ch), work 2 scs in secondch from hk, sc in each remaining ch across, turn: count 33 scs.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn: count 33 scs.
  3. Row 3: Ch 1, work 2 scs in first sc, sc in each remaining st across, turn: count 34 scs.
  4. Row 4: Rep Row 2: count 34 scs.
  5. Row 5: Rep Row 3: count 35 scs.
  6. Row 6: Rep Row 2: count 35 scs.
  7. Row 7: Rep Row 3: count 36 scs.
  8. Rows 8-20: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn: count 36 scs.
  9. Row 21: Ch 1, sk 1 st; sc in each remaining st across: count 35 scs.
  10. Row 22: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn: count 35 scs.
  11. Rows 23 and 25: Rep Row 21: count 34, 33 scs.
  12. Rows 24 and 26: Rep Row 22: count 34, 33 scs. Do not turn at end of last row.
  13. Working in sts and ends of rows, sc evenly around to center of curved edge (flap), ch 9; sl st in first ch for button loop, sc in each remaining st around, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

FRONT:

  1. Row 1: With Yellow yarn, ch 24, sc in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch across, turn: count 23 scs.
  2. Rows 2-26: Ch 1, sc in each st across: count 23 scs. Do not turn at the end of the last row.
  3. Working in sts and ends of rows, sc evenly around, join with sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.

SIDES/BOTTOM:

  1. Row 1: With Crayon yarn, ch 7, sc in each st across, turn: count 6 scs.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, sc in back lp of each st across, turn: count 6 scs.
  3. Rep Row 2 until piece fits around sides and bottom of front.
  4. Thread tapestry needle with matching yarn. Carefully matching sts, sew sides/bottom to sides and bottom of front with front of purse lapped slightly over side edge. Sew opposite side of sides/bottom to sides and bottom of back, carefully matching sts as before. Do not include flap.

STRAP:

  1. With Crayon yarn, ch 8, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring, sc in each ch around: count 8 scs.
  2. Working in rnds without joining, sc in each st around to make a tubular piece about 24 inches long. Fasten off.
  3. Flatten ends of strap. With tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew ends to inside of each side of purse.

BUTTON:

  1. Rnd 1: With Crayon yarn, ch 3, join with sl st in first ch to form a ring, work 9 scs in ring, join with sl st in first ch.
  2. Rnds 2-3: Ch 1, working in rnds without joining, sc in each st around, join with sl st in first st of last rnd. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn. With tapestry needle, weave end through sts and pull up tightly. Secure yarn and use same tail of yarn to sew button to front of purse opposite button loop.

FINISHING:

  1. With right side facing, join Crayon yarn with sl st in first sc of flap above strap joining point, sl st in each sc around flap to button loop, sl st in each ch of button loop and in each rem sc around to joining point of other strap. Fasten off.
  2. Use tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Purse measures about 7-3/4 inches square with a 24-inch-long strap.
