Craft this sewn spring quilt block to decorate your home.
Materials
- Printable patterns below
- Tracing paper and pencil
- 100% cotton fabric: one 6-1/2-in. square of light-green small print for background, two 2-in.-wide x 6-1/2-in.-long strips and two 2-in.-wide x 8-1/2-in.-long strips of light-green small print for outer border; two 1-1/2-in.-wide x 6-1/2-in.-long strips and two 1-1/2-in.-wide x 8-1/2-in.-wide strips of medium-green print for inner border; three 4-in. squares of white-on-white print for flower; two 4-in. squares of medium-green print and two 7-in. squares of dark-green print for leaves
- Paper-backed fusible web
- 10-1/2-in. square of quilt batting
- 10-1/2-in. square of backing fabric
- All-purpose thread to match fabrics
- Gold quilting thread
- White pearl cotton and embroidery needle
- Rotary cutter and mat
- Quilter’s ruler
- Quilter’s marking pen or pencil
- Standard sewing supplies
Instructions
- Before crafting your spring quilt block, download and print the flower patterns and quilt block patterns.
- Wash all fabrics as many times as needed until rinse water runs clear. Dry and press all fabrics.
APPLIQUES:
White Flower:
- Trace white flower pattern onto tracing paper.
- Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse a slightly smaller square of fusible paper-backed web to wrong side of one white-on-white print square. Remove backing and, with edges matching, fuse square to wrong side of another white-on-white square.
- Pin remaining white-on-white square to fused square with right sides facing and edges matching.
- Pin traced pattern to layered fabrics. With a small straight stitch, sew on traced lines of pattern. Remove pattern. Trim just outside stitching, leaving a narrow seam allowance. Clip curves and trim corners. Make a small slit in center on wrong side only. Turn right side out and press.
Small Green Leaves:
- Trace small green leaves pattern onto tracing paper.
- Pin two squares of medium-green print together with right sides facing and edges matching.
- Pin traced pattern to layered fabrics. With a small straight stitch, sew on traced lines of pattern. Remove pattern. Trim just outside stitching, leaving a narrow seam allowance.
- Clip curves and trim corners. Make a small slit in center on wrong side only. Turn right side out and press.
Large Green Leaves:
- Trace large green leaves pattern onto tracing paper.
- Fuse the two dark-green print squares together with wrong sides facing and edges matching.
- Pin traced pattern to fused fabrics. With a small straight stitch, sew on outline of pattern. Remove pattern. Trim just outside stitching. With matching thread and a narrow satin stitch, stitch around edges of leaves.
PIECED BLOCK:
Inner Border:
- With a ¼-in. seam, sew a 1-1/2-in.-wide x 6-1/2-in.-long medium-green print strip to opposite sides of 6-1/2-in. background square. Open and press seams toward strips.
- In the same way, sew a 1-1/2-in.-wide x 8-1/2-in.-long medium-green strip to top and bottom of background. Open and press seams toward strips.
Outer Border:
- With a ¼-in. seam, sew a 1-1/2-in.-wide x 8-1/2-in.long light-green print strip to opposite sides of background square. Open and press seams toward strips.
- In the same way, sew a 1-1/2-in.-wide x 10-1/2-in.-long medium-green strip to top and bottom of pieced background. Open and press seams toward strips.
QUILTING:
- Center batting on top of backing and block on top of batting. Pin in place.
- With matching thread, quilt inner and outer border areas as desired.
- Use quilter’s marking pen or pencil to draw spiderweb on front of block. Use white pearl cotton and a running stitch to sew over lines. See Fig. 1 in patterns for stitch illustration.
FINISHING:
- Pin large green leaves right side up to front of block as shown in photo. Use matching thread and a straight stitch to sew over inside design lines of leaves, stitching through all layers.
- Pin small green leaves and white-on-white flower right side up to center of dark-green leaves. Use gold thread and a straight stitch to sew over inside design lines of white-on-white flower, stitching through all layers.
- With design centered, trim block to a 10-in. square.

Acabo de descubrir la elaboración de quilt y estoy fascinada. Aquí en el lugar en el que vivo -Campeche, México- no se acostumbran este tipo de ropas de cama, así que voy a aprender con instrucciones que encuentre en la red cómo hacer el primero. Sé que no será fácil pero ¡me encantaron!.
