Instructions

GAUGE: 13 hdcs and 10 rows = 4 inches.

SPECIAL TECHNIQUES:

Hdc 2 tog: Yo, insert hk in first st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk, yo, insert hk in second st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 4 lps on hk.

DIRECTIONS: 

For this project, the ch-2 at the beg of each row does not count as a st. Always work the first st in the st just below the beg ch-2. Always insert the hk in both lps of the st below.

PLACE MAT: With orange, ch 16 (remembering that the lp on hk never counts as one of the chs).

  1. P-Row 1 (RS): Hdc in third ch from hk and in each remaining ch: count 14 hdcs.
  2. P-Rows 2-4: Ch 2, turn; work 2 hdcs in first hdc, hdc across until 1 hdc remains, work 2 hdcs in last hdc: count 2 additional hdcs at the end of each row.
  3. P-Row 5: Ch 2, turn; hdc across row: count 20 hdcs.
  4. P-Row 6: Rep P-Row 2: count 22 hdcs.
  5. P-Row 7: Ch 2, turn; hdc across row.
  6. P-Row 8: Rep P-Row 2: count 24 hdcs.
  7. P-Rows 9-11: Rep P-Row 7.
  8. P-Row 12: Ch 2, turn; hdc 2 tog, hdc across until 2 sts remain; hdc 2 tog: count 22 hdcs.
  9. P-Row 13: Rep P-Row 7.
  10. P-Row 14: Rep P-Row 12: count 20 hdcs.
  11. P-Row 15: Rep P-Row 7.
  12. P-Row 16: Rep P-Row 12: count 18 hdcs.
  13. P-Row 17 (RS): Ch 2, turn; hdc 2 tog, hdc in next 4 hdcs, sc in next 2 hdcs (mark the first sc with a safety pin), sl st in next 2 hdcs, sc in next 2 hdcs, hdc in next 4 hdcs, hdc 2 tog. Fasten off.
  14. Place mat stem: PS-Row 1: Do not turn work. With RS facing, join green with a sl st
  15. in marked sc, remove pin. Ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in each of next 5 sts: count 6 hdcs.
  16. PS-Rows 2-3: Ch 2, turn; hdc in each st across row.
  17. PS-Row 4: Ch 2, turn; dc in first hdc, hdc in next 2 hdcs, sc in next 2 hdcs, sl st in last hdc. Fasten off. Use yarn needle to weave in loose ends.

COASTER: Pumpkin: With orange, ch 12.

  1. Row 1 (RS): Hdc in third ch from hk and in each remaining ch: count 10 hdcs.
  2. Rows 2-4: Ch 2, turn; work 2 hdcs in first hdc, hdc across until 1 hdc remains, work 2 hdcs in last hdc: count 2 additional hdcs at the end of each row.
  3. Rows 5-6: Ch 2, turn; hdc across row: count 16 hdcs.
  4. Rows 7-8: Ch 2, turn; hdc 2 tog, hdc across until 2 sts remain; hdc 2 tog: count 2 less
  5. hdcs at the end of each row.
  6. Row 9 (RS): Ch 2, turn; hdc 2 tog, hdc in each of next 2 hdcs, sc in next hdc (mark this st with a safety pin), sl st in next 2 hdcs, sc in next hdc, hdc in next 2 hdcs, hdc 2 tog. Fasten off.
  7. Stem: S-Row 1: Do not turn work. With RS facing, join green with a sl st in marked sc, remove pin. Ch 2, hdc in same st as sl st, hdc in each of next 3 sts: count 4 hdcs.
  8. S-Row 2: Ch 2, turn; hdc in each st across row. Fasten off. Use yarn needle to weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Place mat is 8-1/2 inches high x 8-1/4 inches wide and coaster is 4-1/2 inches high x 5-1/2 inches wide.
