Instructions

GAUGE: Using Size I crochet hook, 3 scs and 3 rows = 1 inch. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

Finished Size: Each place mat measures about 12 inches wide x 18 inches long. Each napkin ring measures about 2 inches wide x 1-1/2 inches high.

DIRECTIONS:

PLACE MAT (make two):

  1. Row 1: With green yarn and size I crochet hk, ch 50, sc in eighth ch from hk (counts as end hdc and ch-sp), ch 2, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch, * ch 4, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch, ch 2, sk next 2 chs, sc in next ch; repeat from * to last 3 chs, ch 2, sk next 2 chs, hdc in last ch: 15 ch-sps.
  2. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in ch-2 sp, * work 4 dcs in next ch-2 sp, sc in next ch-4 sp; repeat from * across, ch 4, turn: 28 dcs and 8 scs.
  3. Row 3: Sc in first dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dcs, sc in next dc, * ch 4, sk next sc, sc in next dc, ch 2, sk next 2 dcs, sc in next dc; repeat from * across to last sc, ch 2, hdc in last sc: 7 ch-4 sps and 8 ch-2 sps.
  4. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until work measures about 17-1/2 in., ending with a Row 2. Do not fasten off.
  5. Edging: Round 1: Ch 1, turn, sc around, working 1 sc in each st across narrow end, 3 scs in each corner, 1 sc in ends of each row and 2 scs in hdc and ch-sps around; join with a sl st in first sc of round. Fasten off.
  6. Round 2: With a white slip knot on hk, sc in any sc, ch 2, sk 1 sc, * sc in next sc, ch 2, sk 1 sc; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
  7. Large Poinsettia (make two): With red yarn and size E crochet hk, ch 6, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, * ch 6, sc in second ch from hk, hdc in each of the next 2 chs, dc in each of the next 2 chs, sc in ring; repeat from * five more times. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  8. Small Poinsettia (make four): With red yarn and size E crochet hk, ch 6, join with a sl st in first ch made, forming a ring, * ch 4, sc in second ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sc in ring; repeat from * five more times. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  9. Finishing: Use yarn or tapestry needle and yarn ends to tack one large and two small poinsettias to lower right corner of each place mat.
  10. Thread yarn or tapestry needle with white yarn. Add three French knots to the center of each poinsettia. See French Knot for stitch illustration.
  11. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

NAPKIN RING (make two):

  1. Row 1: With green yarn and size I crochet hk, ch 7, dc in fourth ch from hk and in each remaining ch, ch 3, turn: count 4 dcs.
  2. Row 2: Dc in each dc across, ch 3, turn: 4 dcs.
  3. Rows 3-9: Repeat Row 2: 4 dcs. Fasten off at end of Row 9, leaving a tail of yarn.
  4. Thread tail of yarn onto yarn or tap-estry needle. With edges matching, sew narrow ends together to form a ring.
  5. Poinsettia: (make two): With red yarn and size E crochet hk, ch 6, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring, * ch 4, sc in second ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, sc in ring; repeat from * five more times. Fasten off, leaving a tail of yarn.
  6. Finishing: Use yarn or tapestry needle and yarn ends to tack one small poinsettia to each napkin ring, covering seam.
  7. Thread yarn or tapestry needle with white yarn. Stitch three French knots to the center of each poinsettia. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.
  8. Deck your place settings with style!
