Instructions

GAUGE: One poinsettia block = 8 inches square.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

Directions: POINSETTIA BLOCK (make 30): All rnds are worked on the right side of work.

  1. Rnd 1: With Hot Red, ch 6, sl st in sixth ch from hk to form a ring; * sl st in ring, ch 10, sc in second ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, tr in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in last ch, sl st in ring; rep from * seven more times, join with a sl st in beg st: count 8 petals. Fasten off.
  2. Rnd 2: With a Grass Green sl knot on hk, sc in first sc at tip of any petal; * ch 5, yo twice, insert hk in tr on same petal, yo and draw up a lp, [yo, draw yarn through 2 lps] twice (2 lps remain on hk), yo twice, insert hk in bottom lp of tr on next petal and draw up a lp, [yo, draw yarn through 2 lps] twice (3 lps remain on hk), yo, draw yarn through 3 lps on hk, ch 5, sc in first sc at tip of next petal; rep from * around, ending last rep with a sl st in beg st. Fasten off.
  3. Rnd 3: With a Soft White sl knot on hk, sc in ch-5 sp before any petal; * ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep with a sl st in beg st.
  4. Rnd 4: Sl st into next ch-5 sp twice, work (ch 3, 1 dc, ch 3, 2 dcs) in same ch-5 sp as sl st, [ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp] three times; * ch 5, work (2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-5 sp, [ch 5, sc in next sp] three times; rep from * two more times; ch 5, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  5. Rnd 5: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next dc; * work (2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, dc in next 2 dcs, [ch 1, work 3 dcs in next ch-5 sp] four times, ch 1, dc in next 2 dcs; rep from * two more times, work (2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, dc in next 2 dcs, [ch 1, work 3 dcs in next ch-5 sp] four times, ch 1, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  6. Rnd 6: Ch 1, sc in same st as sl st, sc in each dc to corner ch-3 sp; * work 5 scs in corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc and ch to next corner ch-3 sp; rep from * two more times, work 5 scs in corner ch-3 sp, sc in each dc and ch to beg st, join with a sl st in beg st. Fasten off.

ASSEMBLY: With a Soft White sl knot on hk, join white with a sc in corner of first block. Holding blocks with wrong sides together, ch 1, sc in corner of second block; * ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc on first block, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc on second block; rep from * ending in center st of next corner on second block. Fasten off.

Continue to join the blocks in this way, creating a total of six strips with five blocks in each strip. Join the strips in the same way.

EDGING:

  1. E-Rnd 1: With a Soft White sl knot on hk, join yarn with a sl st in any st along the edge, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each st around, working 3 hdcs in each corner st. Fasten off.
  2. E-Rnd 2: With a Grass Green sl knot on hk, join yarn with a sl st in any st along the edge, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, working 5 dcs in each corner st. Fasten off.
  3. E-Rnd 3: With Hot Red, rep E-Rnd 1. Use the tapestry or yarn needle to weave in the loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is about 54 inches long x 45 inches wide.
