Instructions

GAUGE: 4 scs and 4 rows = 1 inch. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

Changing colors: When changing colors, always hold the dropped color behind the piece and work each st of the new color around the strand of the dropped color so it will be in the correct position when you change colors again.

Reverse sc: * Sc in next st to the right (the one behind instead of ahead of last st); rep from * around.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, refer to gauge, techniques/stitches used, etc.

  1. Rnd 1 (RS): With white, ch 2 (not counting the lp on hk); work 6 scs in second ch from hk: count 6 scs. Pull the beginning tail to close center of circle just made. Mark last st with a safety pin.
  2. Rnd 2: Working in continuous rnds on RS of work throughout, work 2 scs in each st around: count 12 scs. (At the end of each rnd, remove safety pin before working in last st and use to mark the new last st.)
  3. Rnd 3: Sc in next st; insert hk in next st, drop white strand and catch a red strand with hk several inches from the end, pull yarn through st to form a lp (there should be 1 lp of each color on hk), lay the white strand over the red strand, yo, pull red yarn through 2 lps on hk, work 1 red sc in same st; * drop red, sc in next st with white, drop white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 18 scs.
  4. Rnd 4: * Sc in next 2 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 24 sts.
  5. Rnd 5: * Sc in next 3 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 30 sts.
  6. Rnd 6: * Sc in next 4 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 36 sts.
  7. Rnd 7: * Sc in next 5 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 42 sts.
  8. Rnd 8: * Sc in next 6 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 48 sts.
  9. Rnd 9: * Sc in next 7 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 54 sts.
  10. Rnd 10: * Sc in next 8 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 60 sts.
  11. Rnd 11: * Sc in next 9 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 66 sts.
  12. Rnd 12: * Sc in next 10 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 72 sts.
  13. Rnds 13: * Sc in next 11 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 78 sts.
  14. Rnd 14: * Sc in next 12 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 84 sts.
  15. Rnd 15: * Sc in next 13 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 90 sts.
  16. Rnd 16: * Sc in next 14 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around: count 96 sts.
  17. Rnd 17: * Sc in next 15 sts with white, work 2 scs in next st with red; rep from * around; join with a sl st in next st with red: count 102 sts. Cut white.
  18. Rnd 18: With red, ch 1, reverse sc in each st around. Fasten off.
  19. Thread the size 16 tapestry needle with the loose end and join last st to beg st before weaving in the end. Weave in the remaining loose ends with the tap­estry needle.
  20. Use for all of your celebrations!

FINISHED SIZE: Hot pad measures 9 inches across.
