GAUGE: In St st with larger needles, 19 sts and 26 rows = 4 inches.

STITCHES USED: 

GARTER STITCH: Garter st

  • Every row: Knit.

KNIT 1, PURL 1 RIBBING: K 1, p 1 rib

  • Row or Round 1: (K 1, p 1) across or around.
  • Repeat Row 1.

KNIT 2, PURL 2 RIBBING: K 2, p 2 rib

  • Row 1: (K 2, p 2) across.
  • Repeat Row 1.

STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

DIRECTIONS: Body of sweater is knit in one piece from neck down, then sleeves are added.

BODY: With smaller needles, cast on 72 sts.

  • Row 1 (RS): Keeping first and last 5 sts in garter st, work remainder of row in k 1, p 1 rib.
  • Row 2: Repeat Row 1.
  • Row 3 (buttonhole): K 5, work to last 5 sts in k 1, p 1 rib, k 1, bind off 2, k 2.
  • Row 4: K 1, cast on 2 sts, k 2, work to last 5 sts in k 1, p 1 rib, k 5.
  • Note: Work buttonholes as in last 5 sts of Row 3 and first 5 sts of Row 4 in Rows 21-22, 39-40, 57-58 and 63-64.
  • Row 5: Repeat Row 1.
  • Row 6 (WS): With larger needles, k 5, p 62, k 5.
  • Row 7: K 5, place marker, k 11, yo, k 1, place marker, yo, k 6 (sleeve), yo, k 1, place marker, yo, k 24 (back), yo, k 1, place marker, yo, k 6 (sleeve), yo, k 1, place marker, yo, k 11 (front), place marker, k 5 (band): 80 sts.
  • Row 8: K 5, p to last 5 sts, k 5.
  • Row 9: K 5, k 12, yo, k 1, yo, k 8, yo, k 1, yo, k 26, yo, k 1, yo, k 8, yo, k 1, yo, k 12, k 5: 88 sts.
  • Row 10: K 5, p to last 5 sts, k 5.
  • Row 11 and odd-numbered rows through Row 25: Repeat Row 9, working pattern est in Rows 7 and 9 to add 1 more st between front markers and 1 more st on each edge between sleeve and back markers: 152 sts at end of Row 25.
  • Rows 12 and 14: Knit.
  • Rows 16 and even-numbered rows through Row 26: Repeat Row 10.
  • Row 27: K 5, k 21 (front), slip next 28 sts onto st holder for sleeve, k 44 (back), slip next 28 sts onto st holder for other sleeve, k 21 (front), k 5: 96 front/back sts.
  • Rows 28 and 30: Repeat Row 10.
  • Row 29: Knit.
  • Row 31: K 5, (p 2, k 2) across to last 7 sts, p 2, k 5.
  • Row 32: K 5, (k 2, p 2) across to last 7 sts, k 7.
  • Row 33: Repeat Row 32.
  • Row 34: Repeat Row 31.
  • Rows 35-40: Repeat Rows 31-34, then Rows 31-32.
  • Row 41: Knit.
  • Row 42: K 5, p to last 5 sts, k 5.
  • Rows 43-58: Repeat Rows 41-42.
  • Rows 59-65: With smaller needles, repeat Rows 31-32 three times, then Row 31, add­ing buttonhole in Rows 63-64. Bind off loosely.

SLEEVES: Take 28 sts from one st holder and divide evenly between three dp needles. Begin working in rounds.

  • Round 1: Knit.
  • Rounds 2-3: (K 2, p 2) around.
  • Rounds 4-5: (P 2, k 2) around.
  • Rounds 6-11: Repeat Rounds 2-5, then Rounds 2-3.
  • Knit until sleeve measures 4 inches from underarm.
  • Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch.
  • Bind off loosely.
  • Work second sleeve the same.
  • Weave in ends and sew up small hole in each underarm. Use yarn to hand-sew buttons to left front border, matching buttonholes.

FINISHED SIZE: Sweater is Newborn size. Garment chest measurement is 18-1/2 inches.
