Instructions

AFGHAN STRIP:

  1. Rows 1-3: With size 10 needles, cast on 44 sts. Work in garter st for three rows.
  2. Row 4: K 5, pm (means place marker); k 2, pm; k 9, pm; k 2, pm; k 8, pm; k 2, pm; k 9, pm; k 2, pm; k 5.
  3. Pattern Rows: Beginning with P-Row 1, rep P-Rows 1-10 until there are 31 full cables (32 repeats), ending with P-Row 10. Pass the st markers from one needle to the next as you knit to keep them in position.
  4. Final Rows: Rep P-Row 1 once, removing markers as you knit. Work in garter st for two rows, then bind off next row as you knit. Label this strip No. 1 and tie a contrasting piece of yarn to the cast-on edge to avoid errors when the afghan is assembled.
  5. Knit four more afghan strips, marking the cast-on edge as before and labeling each strip from 2 to 5.

STRIP ASSEMBLY:

  1. A-Row 1: Working along one long edge of each strip, prepare strips Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 as follows: Turn the strip right side up with the bound-off edge to your right. With size H crochet hk, join yarn with a sl st in the upper right-hand corner st, ch 1, sc in same st; working from right to left, work 1 sc in the end of each row between ridges, ending with 2 scs in last row. (The edge should lay flat. If it seems short, rip back and redo the row with a larger hook. If it seems long, rip back and redo the row with a smaller hook.)
  2. A-Row 2: Ch 3, turn; * skip next 2 scs, sc in next sc; rep from * to end of strip, skipping an occasional extra st if needed for the row to come out even and the edge to lay flat. Fasten off, leaving a 6- to 8-inch-long tail.
  3. Joining Rnd 1: Beginning with strip No. 1, place bound-off edge to your right with wrong side up and rep A-Row 1.
  4. Joining Rnd 2: Turn same strip right side up with the marked end of strip to your right. Turn strip No. 2 wrong side up with the marked end to your right and place it behind strip No. 1, wrong sides together.
  5. On strip No. 1, ch 3; sc in first sc of strip No. 2 and sl st to center of first lp; * ch 2, sk next 2 scs of strip No. 1 and sc in next sc of strip No. 1, ch 2, sc in next lp of strip No. 2; rep from * across row, ending with ch 2, sc in last st of strip No. 1, ch 3, sc in last st of strip No. 2. (If needed, skip an occasional extra sc on strip No. 1 to come out even.)
  6. Beginning with the unworked edge of strip No. 2, join strips 2 and 3 in the same way, then join strip 3 to 4 and 4 to 5.

BORDER:

  1. Side edges: With afghan facing right side up, work A-Row 1 along one long edge. Rotate afghan and rep A-Row 1 on opposite edge.
  2. End Row 1: With afghan facing right side up, join yarn with a sl st in first right-hand corner st, ch 1, sc in same st; sc in each st across first strip; * work 2 scs in ch-3 sp between strips, sc in each st across next strip; rep from * across the edge, skipping an occasional st if needed for ends to lay flat.
  3. End Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st; sc in each sc across row. Fasten off, leaving a 6- to 8-inch-long tail.
  4. Rotate afghan and repeat End Rows 1-2 on opposite end.

FRINGE:

  1. For each fringe, cut four 12-inch lengths of yarn. Stack the strands and fold the stack in half. With wrong side of afghan facing you, insert crochet hk in corner st from front to back and pull the fold through to form a loop. Draw yarn ends through this loop and pull the ends to form a knot around the stitch.
  2. Add fringe to every other st across top and bottom edges of afghan. With tapestry needle, weave in any loose ends that can’t be hidden in the fringe. Trim ends even.

Gauge: 16 sts and 23 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Garter st: K each st of every row.

  1. Pattern repeats over 10 rows.
  2. P-Row 1 (RS): K 5; p 2; [kb (means k 1 in back of st), p 1] four times, kb; p 2; slip 4 sts onto cable needle and hold in back, k 4, k 4 from cable needle; p 2; [kb, p 1] four times, kb; p 2; k 5.
