Instructions

Gauge: Working in cartridge-belt rib, 12 sts and 16 rows = 2 inches.

Stitches/Techniques Used:

Make one: M 1:

  • Place right needle under yarn between current st and next st. K into back of yarn.

Wrap yarn and turn:

  • Sl first st on left needle onto right needle, yf, sl first st on right needle back onto left needle.
  • Turn work to go the other direction. Snug up yarn wrap.

Three-needle bind-off:

  • Hold two needles with sts tog in left hand with RS facing. [* Insert third needle into the first st on the front needle and then into the first st on the back needle, k 1 and take the first st off each needle; repeat from * once; pass the second st on the right needle over the first st] repeat until all sts on left-hand needle are used and one st remains on right-hand needle. Cut yarn and pull yarn end through last st.

Traditional bind-off:

  • When binding off with two needles, p any sts that would have been sl st in established pattern.

Cartridge-belt rib:

  • Row 1: K 3, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across row.
  • Row 2:  K 1, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across to last 2 sts, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

DIRECTIONS: Cast on 149 sts.

  1. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across row to last 3 sts, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 2: 149 sts.
  2. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, [k 3, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb] across row to last 4 sts, k 4: 149 sts.
  3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until piece measures 6 in., ending with Row 1: 149 sts.
  4. Armholes and buttonhole: Row 1: Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, M 1, bind off 2, work in established pattern until there are 32 sts on right needle and place these 32 sts on a stitch holder; bind off next 11 sts, work in established pattern until there are 61 sts on right needle; place the remaining 44 sts on left needle on another stitch holder.
  5. Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across row to last 3 sts, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 2: 61 sts.
  6. Row 3 (RS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, [k 3, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb] across row to last 4 sts, k 4: 61 sts.
  7. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until total length measures 11 in., ending with Row 2: 61 sts.
  8. Back shoulders: Row 1: Work in established pattern until 8 sts remain on left needle; wrap yarn and turn.
  9. Row 2: Work in established pattern until 8 sts remain on left needle; wrap yarn and turn.
  10. Row 3: Work 8 sts in established pattern, bind off next 29 sts, cut yarn; sl 16 sts from each shoulder onto separate stitch holders.
  11. Left front: Place 44 sts from left front onto needle so that armhole st will be worked first. Attach yarn.
  12. Row 1 (RS): Bind off 11 sts, work across row in established pattern until 2 sts remain, M 1, k 2: 34 sts.
  13. Row 2 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 2, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across to last 3 sts, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 2: 34 sts.
  14. Row 3: Sl 1 purlwise, yb, [k 3, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb] across row until 5 sts remain, k 3, M 1, k 2: 35 sts.
  15. Row 4:  Sl 1 purlwise, yb, [k 3, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb] across row until 2 sts remain, k 2: 35 sts.
  16. Repeat Row 4 until work is 1-1/4 in. longer than back, ending with a RS row: 35 sts.
  17. Left shoulder: Row 1: Work across row in established pattern until 8 sts remain on left needle, wrap and turn.
  18. Row 2: Work across row in established pattern: 27 sts.
  19. Row 3: Work across entire row in established pattern: 35 sts.
  20. Place left back sts from holder onto separate needle so armhole edge will be worked first. Hold two needles with sts tog in left hand with RS facing. Insert the third needle into first st on the front needle and into first st on back needle, and draw the 2 sts off the left needles; insert right needle into first st on the front needle and into first st on back needle and k the 2 sts tog, pass the 2 sl sts on the right needle over the k st. Work in three-needle bind-off until all sts are used from the back, work in established pattern across remaining 19 sts: 19 sts.
  21. Left collar: Rows 1-18: Work in established pattern for 18 rows, sl first st on collar edge but not on shoulder edge, ending with a RS row: 19 sts.
  22. Work 15 sts in established pattern, wrap and turn, work in established pattern back to edge: 15 sts.
  23. Work 9 sts in established pattern, wrap and turn, work in established pattern back to edge: 9 sts.
  24. Work 5 sts in established pattern, wrap and turn, work in established pattern back to edge: 5 sts.
  25. Cut yarn. Place 5 sts on stitch holder.
  26. Right front: Place sts from holder onto needle so that armhole st will be worked first. Attach yarn.
  27. Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across row to last 3 sts, cast on 2 sts, k 3: 34 sts.
  28. Row 2: Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, M 1, [k 3, yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb] across row to last 4 sts, k 4: 35 sts.
  29. Row 3: Sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 1, [yf, sl 1 purlwise, yb, k 3] across row to last st, k 1: 35 sts.
  30. Repeat Row 3 until work measures 1-1/4 in. longer than back, ending with a WS row.
  31. Right shoulder: Work to correspond to left shoulder.
  32. Right collar: Work to correspond to left collar. Do not cut yarn.
  33. Sl left collar sts from holder onto needle so the collar edge (sl st) will be worked first. Hold two needles in left hand with sts together and WS facing (the WS of the front is the RS of the collar once it is turned). Bind off as for left shoulder.
  34. Finishing: Use tapestry or yarn needle and matching yarn to sew neck edge to collar.
  35. Sew button on left front, opposite the buttonhole.
  36. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.
  37. Present to your favorite toddler!

 

FINISHED SIZE: Toddler vest has a chest measurement of 24 inches and a back length measurement of 11 inches.
