Special Abbreviations/Stitches Used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

GARTER STITCH: garter st

  • Every row: Knit each stitch across row.

STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st

  • Row 1 (Right Side): Knit each stitch across row.
  • Row 2 (Wrong Side): Purl each stitch across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

KNIT 1, PURL 1 RIBBING: k 1, p 1 rib

  • Row 1: * Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * across row.
  • Row 2: Knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches across row.

BIND OFF IN CROCHET: Slip first 2 loops from knitting needle onto crochet hook. With hook, draw yarn through 2 loops. Slip next loop onto hook and draw yarn through 2 loops. Continuing in this manner, bind off all stitches until 1 loop remains. Cut yarn and pull through last loop.

GAUGE: When working in garter st on smaller needles, 20 sts and 40 rows = 4 inches. When working in St st on larger needles, 20 sts and 28 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

DIRECTIONS: 

BEAR: The bear is worked in garter st with brown yarn and smaller needles. His eyes and nose are crocheted with black yarn.

  1. Body and Head: Rows 1-50: Cast on 60 sts. Work 50 rows even in garter st.
  2. Shoulder Dec Section: Row 51: * K 3, k 2 tog; rep from * across row. (When repeating this row, k any leftover sts.)
  3. Row 52: K even across row.
  4. Rows 53-58: Alternating the rows, rep Rows 51 and 52 three times (26 sts at end of final dec row).
  5. Rows 59-60: K even across row for two rows. Mark rows with safety pin for neck.
  6. Head Inc Section: Row 61: * K 3, inc in next st; rep from * across row; k any leftover sts.
  7. Row 62: K even across row.
  8. Rows 63-66: Alternating the rows, rep Rows 61 and 62 two times.
  9. Row 67: * K 4, inc in next st; rep from * across row (60 sts).
  10. Head: Rows 68-106: K 39 rows even in garter st.
  11. Head Dec Section: Rows 107-114: Rep Rows 51-58 (26 sts).
  12. Row 115: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (13 sts).
  13. Finishing body: Cut yarn, leaving a 1-yard-long tail. Thread yarn needle with tail and use to draw tail through sts on needle. Working in the same direction, bring yarn around and draw through sts again, while removing them from needle. Pull yarn taut to close the end. Continuing with tail, sew center back seam.
  14. Stuff head with fiberfill and run a gathering thread of brown yarn between Rows 59 and 60 for neck, leaving yarn loose for now. Stuff body and sew across bottom. Pull gathers around neck and tie off. Remove safety pin.
  15. Ears (Make two): E Rows 1-10: Cast on 30 sts. Work 10 rows even in garter st.
  16. E Row 11: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (15 sts).
  17. E Row 12: K even across row.
  18. E Row 13: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row; k 1 (8 sts).
  19. Finishing ears: Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Draw tail through sts on needle as for head and pull closed. Sew seam with tail.
  20. Insert stuffing. With open ends placed against head, sew ears to head. See photo  below left for position.
  21. Muzzle: M Rows 1-8: Cast on 24 sts. Work 8 rows even in garter st.
  22. M Row 9: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (12 sts).
  23. M Row 10: K even across row.
  24. M Row 11: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (6 sts).
  25. Finishing muzzle: Finish as for ears. Center on face about 1 inch above gathers at neck and sew in place.
  26. Legs (Make two): L Rows 1-40: Cast on 30 sts. Work 40 rows even in garter st.
  27. L Row 41: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (15 sts).
  28. L Row 42: K even across row.
  29. L Row 43: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row; k 1 (8 sts).
  30. Finishing legs: Finish as for ears. After stuffing, sew closed, then sew these seams to bottom seam of body.
  31. Arms (Make two): A Rows 1-36: Cast on 26 sts. Work 36 rows even in garter st.
  32. A Row 37: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (13 sts).
  33. A Row 38: K even across row.
  34. A Row 39: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row; k 1 (7 sts).
  35. Finishing arms: Finish as for ears. After stuffing, sew closed, then sew these seams to sides of body at shoulders.
  36. Eyes (Make two): Rnd 1: With black yarn and crochet hk, ch 2; work 6 sc in second ch from hk.
  37. Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each sc around; sl st in first sc of rnd (12 sc). Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew in place.
  38. Nose: Rep Rnd 1 of eyes; sl st in first sc of rnd (6 sc). Fasten off, leaving a long tail to sew in place.
  39. Finishing bear: Sew on eyes. Center nose on muzzle and embroider lines of yarn in an upside-down “V” as seen in photo.

CLOTHING: All clothing is worked in St st with larger needles. Bears may vary in size, depending on the accuracy of your gauge and the amount of stuffing added during assembly. Check fit of clothing as you work, making adjustments to length by adding or omitting rows. If clothing is tight, use larger needles. If clothing is loose, use smaller needles.

  1. Overall legs (Make two): With denim blue, cast on 32 sts for waist.
  2. OL Rows 1-2: Work in k 1, p 1 rib for two rows.
  3. OL Rows 3-10: Working even in St st, inc 1 st each end on Rows 6 (34 sts) and 10 (36 sts).
  4. Work even in St st on 36 sts until piece measures 7 inches from Row 1. Work four rows even in garter st. Bind off in crochet.
  5. Referring to Knit Teddy Bear Legs, sew overall legs together at center front and center back seams for 4 inches, beginning at waist ribbing. Sew inseam on each leg for remaining 3 inches.
  6. Bib: Count 11 rib sts to the right of center front seam. Starting at this point, pick up and k 1 st in each of these 11 sts; then pick up and k 1 st in each of the next 11 sts on opposite side of seam (22 sts).
  7. B Rows 1,3,5,9,11: K even across row.
  8. B Rows 2,4,6: K 3; place marker; p 16; place marker; k 3. Carry markers through Row 12.
  9. B Row 7: K 3; k 2 tog; k to last 5 sts; k 2 tog; k 3 (20 sts).
  10. B Rows 8,10,12: K 3; p 14; k 3.
  11. B Rows 13-16: Work four rows even in garter st.
  12. B Row 17: Place 4 sts on holder; bind off center 12 sts; k 4 sts.
  13. B Rows 18-69: Work 52 rows even in garter st on 4 sts for strap. Bind off.
  14. Slip four sts from holder onto needle, attach yarn and repeat rows 18-69. Sew snaps to straps and waistband, crisscrossing straps in back.
  15. Sweater: Front Rows 1-2: With red, cast on 30 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for two rows.
  16. F Rows 3-16: Change to St st and work even for 14 rows.
  17. F Rows 17-19: Continuing in St st, dec 1 st each end of Rows 17 (28 sts) and 19 (26 sts).
  18. Continue in St st until piece measures 5 inches from beg. Work in k 1, p 1 rib at neck for two rows and bind off in rib.
  19. Backs (Make two, reversing shaping): With red, cast on 18 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for two rows. Changing to St st, work center back 4 sts in rib. Work to same length as front with decs at side edges as for Front. End at neck with two rows of rib as for Front. Bind off in rib. Sew back and front shoulders together, 1/2 inch on each side.
  20. Sleeves (Make two): Pick up 28 sts between top decs on back and front pieces. Work even in St st for 12 rows. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for two rows. Bind off in rib.
  21. Finishing sweater: Sew sleeve and underarm seams. Sew three snaps evenly spaced on back ribbed edges.
  22. Shoes (Make two): S Rows 1-2: With red, cast on 30 sts. Work two rows even in garter st.
  23. S Rows: 3-12: Work 10 rows even in St st.
  24. S Row 13: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (15 sts).
  25. S Row 14: K even across row.
  26. S Row 15: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row; k 1 (8 sts).
  27. Finishing shoes: Finish as for ears of bear. With seam in back, dress bear. Lace white yarn through fronts like shoelaces and tie bow. If desired, tack shoes to bear.
  28. Cap: C Rows 1-2: With red, cast on 60 sts. Work two rows even in garter st.
  29. C Rows 3-6: Work four rows even in St st.
  30. C Rows 7-14: Rep Rows 51-58 of Bear’s Body (26 sts).
  31. C Row 15: * K 2 tog; rep from * across row (13 sts).
  32. Finish as for ears of bear.
  33. Visor: With seam of cap at center back, pick up and knit 22 sts along center front edge. (Place a safety pin at center front and pick up 11 sts on each side of pin.)
  34. Work seven rows even in garter st, decreasing 1 st at each end of every row. Bind off, still decreasing each end by working k 2 tog in first and last 2 sts. If desired, tack cap to bear.

FINISHED SIZE: Bear is 16 inches tall.
