SPECIAL STITCHES:

Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviation guide.

St st (Stockinette stitch):

Row 1 (RS): K across row

Row 2 (WS): P across row

Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

K 2, p 2 rib (Knit 2, purl 2 ribbing):

Row 1 (RS): K 2, * p 2, k 2; rep from * across row.

Row 2 (WS): P 2, * k 2, p 2; rep from * across row. Rep Rows 1 and 2 as directed.

RC (Right Cross): K third st on needle, k the first st, k the second st, remove all 3 sts from left-hand needle.

SSK (Slip, slip, knit decrease): Slip 2 sts one at a time onto the right-hand needle, insert the left-hand needle into the fronts of these 2 sts and k them together.

Gauge: When working in St st on size 6 (4mm) needles, 18 sts and 22 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check the gauge.

Directions: Before you begin, refer to gauge, techniques/stitches used, etc.

BACK:

  1. With smaller straight needles, cast on 70(78,90,98) sts.
  2. Work even in k 2, p 2 rib for 2 inches, inc 11(13,13,15) sts evenly across last WS row: count 81(91,103,113) sts.
  3. Change to larger needles. Work even in St st until back measures 12(13,13-1/2,14) inches from beg, ending with a WS row: count 81(91,103,113) sts.
  4. K across next 2 rows: count 81(91, 103,113) sts.
  5. Underarm shaping: K 4 rows while at the same time binding off 11(14,
    16,20) sts at the beg of the first 2 rows: count 59(63,71,73) sts.
  6. Setting up yoke pattern (RS): Size Small: YP-Row 1: RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] eight times: count 59 sts.
  7. YP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 59 sts.
  8. Size Medium: YP-Row 1: K 1, p 1, RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] eight times, p 1, k 1: count 63 sts.
  9. YP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 63 sts.
  10. Size Large: YP-Row 1: [K 2, p 1] twice, RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] eight times, [p 1, k 2] twice: count 71 sts.
  11. YP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 71 sts.
  12. Size Extra-Large: YP-Row 1: RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] 10 times: count 73 sts.
  13. YP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 73 sts.
  14. Remaining rows: All sizes: Rep YP-Rows 1-4, working even in established pattern until work measures 6-1/2(7,7-1/2,8) inches from beg of underarm shaping, ending on a WS row. Bind off 16(17,19,19) sts, work in established pattern across 27(29,33,35) sts and place sts on stitch holder, bind off rem 16(17,19,19) sts.

FRONT:

  1. Work the same as for back, including the underarm shaping and yoke pattern, until work is 4 rows shorter than back.
  2. Shaping neckline: Place center 19(21,25,27) sts on stitch holder.
  3. Working on both sides of the neck with separate balls of yarn, dec 1 st at each neck edge every row four times.
  4. Bind off rem 16(17,19,19) sts for each shoulder.

SLEEVE (make 2):

  1. With smaller straight needles, cast on 38(38,42,42) sts.
  2. Work even in k 2, p 2 rib for 2 inches, inc 5(7,7,9) sts evenly across last WS row: count 43(45,49,51) sts.
  3. Change to larger needles. Work in St st, inc 1 st at each end of every fourth row 15(16,16,17) times: count 73(77, 81,85) sts.
  4. Work even in St st until sleeve measures 17(17-1/2,17-1/2,18) inches from beg, ending with a WS row.
  5. Knit 4 rows, marking each end st of last row for underarm.
  6. Setting up sleeve pattern (RS): Size Small: SP-Row 1: RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] 10 times: count 73 sts.
  7. SP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 73 sts.
  8. Size Medium: SP-Row 1: K 1, p 1, RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] 10 times, p 1, k 1: count 77 sts.
  9. SP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 77 sts.
  10. Size Large: SP-Row 1: [P 1, k 2, p 1, RC] 11 times, p 1, k 2, p 1: count 81 sts.
  11. SP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 81 sts.
  12. Size Extra-Large: SP-Row 1: [K 2, p 1] twice, RC, [p 1, k 2, p 1, RC] 10 times, [p 1, k 2] twice: count 85 sts.
  13. SP-Rows 2-4: K the k sts and p the p sts across each row as they are presented: count 85 sts.
  14. Remaining rows: All sizes: Rep SP-Rows 1-4, working even in established pattern until sleeve measures 2-1/2(3,4,4-1/2) inches above marked underarm sts, ending with a WS row.
  15. Shaping saddle: Bind off 26(28, 30,32) sts at beg of next 2 rows. Place rem 21 sts on stitch holder. Do not fasten off yarn. Set aside.
  16. Joining saddle shoulders: Left shoulder: With circular needle, pick up front strand of 16(17,19,19) bound-off sts beg at left armhole along front shoulder; with same end of needle and beg at neck edge, pick up front strand of 16(17,19,19) bound-off sts along back shoulder. Shoulder sts will be worked off each end of the circular needle.
  17. Slip last shoulder st onto stitch holder. * K a shoulder edge st and the first saddle st (on the holder) tog, work in established pattern across next 19 saddle sts (on the holder) to last st, SSK (one st from saddle and one picked-up st from shoulder edge), turn, p a shoulder edge st and first saddle st tog through back loops (insert right-hand needle from left to right into back of sts and p the sts tog), work in established pattern across 19 saddle sts to last st, p last saddle st and a shoulder edge st tog, turn; rep from * until all picked-up sts have been worked. Place 21 saddle sts on holder.
  18. Right shoulder: Pick up right armhole and rem 21 saddle sts the same as for left armhole. Work right saddle shoulder the same as for left.

TURTLENECK:

  1. With double-pointed needles, k across sts of back neck, dec 1 st in each cable section: count 24(26, 28,30) sts.
  2. K across sts of left saddle, dec 1 st in each cable section: count 42(44,46,48) sts.
  3. Pick up and k 4(4,5,5) sts along left edge of neck, k across sts of front neck, dec 1 st in each cable section, pick up and k 4(4,5,5) sts along right edge of neck: count 66(70,78,82) sts.
  4. K across sts of right saddle, dec 1 st in each cable section: count 84(88,96, 100) sts. Join.
  5. Next Rnd: * K 2, p 2; rep from * around. Work even in k 2, p 2 rib until turtleneck measures 6 inches. Bind off loosely in k 2, p 2 rib.

FINISHING:

  1. With right sides facing, use tapestry or yarn needle to sew armhole seams, matching underarm markers of the sleeves to bound-off sts of sweater.
  2. In same way, sew sleeve and side seams.

Finished size: Directions are for an Adult size Small sweater with a finished chest measurement of 36 inches. Changes for Medium with a finished chest measurement of 40 inches, Large with a finished chest measurement of 46 inches and Extra-Large with a finished chest measurement of 50 inches are in parentheses or otherwise noted in instructions.
