KNIT STOCKING CAP PATTERN - FINISHED SIZE: Stocking cap is about 27 inches long with pom-pom.

GAUGE:  Working in St st, 16 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches.

General Instructions:

St st = stockinette stitch:
Row 1 (RS): K across row.
Row 2 (WS): P across row.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 as directed, changing colors as instructed and leaving a 10-in. tail of yarn at the end
of each color change to use later to sew seam of cap.

DIRECTIONS:

Knit Stocking Cap:

  1.  Make a provisional cast-on by using crochet hook and white yarn to make 91 chains (loop on hook does not count as a chain).
  2. Cut yarn and pull a tail of yarn through the final loop on hook.
  3. With green yarn and knitting needle, pick up 90 sts in back loop only of each chain, starting with back loop of first chain made and leaving last chain made unused.
  4. Work in St st for 6-1/2 in., ending with a WS row. Fasten off, leaving a 15-in. tail of yarn.
  5. Change to white yarn and work in St st for 2 in., ending with a RS row. Fasten off. Fold cast-on edge to WS for hem, bringing provisional cast-on row to needle.
  6. Change to green yarn. Pull back loop of final chain of cast-on to ravel cast-on chain, leaving a green loop free. Pick up and purl free loop and first loop of row on needle as one. Continue in this way across row, forming the hem.
  7. Work in St st for 1-1/2 in., ending with a WS row. Fasten off.
  8. In same way, work a band of white yarn, green yarn and then white yarn. Fasten off.
  9. Change to green yarn. * K 1, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Work in St st for 1-1/2 in., ending with a WS row. Fasten off.
  10. Repeat step 9, working a band of white yarn, green yarn, white yarn and then green yarn. Fasten off.
  11. Change to white yarn. Work in St st for 2 in.
  12. Run yarn through sts remaining on needle. Draw up yarn tightly.
  13. Fold stocking cap with right sides together, matching ends of rows. Thread needle with white yarn and sew seam of last white band. Sew remainder of back seam, using matching tails of yarn. Tuck seam to inside of hem and stitch seam with green yarn.

Pom-pom:

  1. Working with a green strand and a white strand of yarn as one, wind yarn around 6-in. piece of cardboard 50 times.
  2. Cut yarn at opposite edges of cardboard to make yarn pieces 6 in. long; tie a 24-in. piece of yarn tightly around center of stack.
  3. Make another stack of yarn in the same way.
  4. Place second stack of yarn on top of first stack. Tie the two stacks of yarn together tightly.
  5. Holding long ends of yarn, shake the pom-pom to fluff yarns. Trim ends with scissors to make a ball about 5 in. across. Do not cut long yarn ends.
  6. Thread long yarn ends onto yarn or tapestry needle and sew pom-pom to tip of hat. Fasten off and trim excess yarn.
