Instructions

GAUGE: Working in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on size 10 needles, 15 sts and 20 rows = 4 inches. Working in St st (k on RS, p on WS) on size 8 needles, 15 sts and 22 rows = 4 inches.

DIRECTIONS

SCARF:

  1. Cast on 37 sts.
  2. Row 1 (RS): [K 1, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, k 1, yo, k2tog, yo] twice, k 1, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, k 1, yo, k2tog, yo, k 1: 37 sts.
  3. Row 2 (WS): P across row: 37 sts.
  4. Row 3: [K 2, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k 1] twice, k 2, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k 2: 37 sts.
  5. Row 4: P across row: 37 sts.
  6. Repeat Rows 1-4 until piece measures 60 inches or desired length, ending with an odd numbered row.
  7. Bind off in k 1, p 1 pattern across row. Fasten off.
  8. Use crochet hook to weave in all loose ends.
  9. Fringe: Cut 72 14-inch lengths of yarn. Fold one strand of yarn in half. Insert crochet hook into first stitch on one narrow edge of scarf. Draw fold of yarn through stitch on WS of scarf to make a loop and pull ends to tighten loop around yarn. Repeat to add 36 pieces of yarn fringe evenly spaced along both narrow ends of scarf. Trim ends even.

HAT:

  1. Cast on 96 sts.
  2. Row 1: K 1, p 1 across: 96 sts.
  3. Rows 2-8: K the k sts and p the p sts across, inc 1 st at end of Row 8: 97 sts.
  4. Row 9 (RS): K 1, * yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, k 1, yo, k2tog, yo; repeat from * across, ending last repeat with k 1: 97 sts.
  5. Row 10 (WS): P across row: 97 sts.
  6. Row 11: K 2, * yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, yo, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, k2tog, yo, k2tog, yo, k 1; repeat from * across, ending last repeat with k 2: 97 sts.
  7. Row 12: P across row: 97 sts.
  8. Rows 13-40: Repeat Rows 9-12 seven times, dec 1 st at end of Row 40: 96 sts.
  9. Row 41: * K2tog, p 1; repeat from * across: 64 sts.
  10. Row 42: K 1, p 1 across: 64 sts.
  11. Rows 43-44: Repeat Row 42: 64 sts.
  12. Row 45: K2tog across: 32 sts.
  13. Row 46: P across row: 32 sts.
  14. Row 47: K2tog across: 16 sts.
  15. Row 48: P across row: 16 sts.
  16. Row 49: K2tog across: 8 sts.
  17. Row 50: P across row: 8 sts.
  18. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail of yarn. Thread tail onto yarn or tapestry needle and insert through remaining sts. Pull yarn tight to draw up sts. Fold hat with RS together and ends matching. Use yarn to sew back seam.
  19. Pom-pom: Wind matching yarn around 3-inch square of cardboard 50 times. Cut yarn at opposite edges of cardboard to make yarn pieces 3 inches long. Carefully remove cardboard. Tie another piece of yarn tightly around center of yarn pieces. Holding ends of tie, shake the pom-pom to fluff.
  20. Thread ends of tie onto yarn or tapestry needle and sew pom-pom to top of hat. Fasten off. Trim ends as needed.
