FINISHED SIZE: Excluding the straps, Knit Felted Handbag Craft measures about 12 inches wide x 8 inches deep x 7-1/2 inches high. Finished size may vary depending on felting.

DIRECTIONS:

KNITTING: Purse is made using two strands of black, two strands of red and three strands of novelty yarn throughout.

Bottom: With black, cast on 28 sts.

Rows 1-28: K each row: 28 sts.

Bind off.

Body: Round 1: With red, pick up 28 sts along one edge of bottom piece, place stitch marker, pick up 28 sts along adjoining edge, place marker, pick up 28 sts, place marker, pick up 28 sts, place marker: 112 sts.

Rounds 2-11: K around: 112 sts.

Round 12: With black, k around: 112 sts.

Rounds 13-14: With novelty yarn, p around: 112 sts.

Round 15: With black, k around: 112 sts.

Rounds 16-25: With red, k around: 112 sts.

Rounds 26-29: Repeat Rounds 12-15: 112 sts.

Rounds 30-39: With red, k around: 112 sts.

Rounds 40-43: Repeat Rounds 12-15: 112 sts.

Rounds 44-49: With red, k around: 112 sts.

Round 50: With black, k around: 112 sts.

Round 51: With novelty yarn, p around: 112 sts.

Rounds 52-57: Repeat Rounds 50 and 51: 112 sts.

With black, bind off knitwise.

Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

I-cord strap (make two): With red, cast on 4 sts.

K across, do not turn. Slide sts to opposite end of needle, k across. Repeat until cord measures about 28 inches.

Weave in loose ends.

FELTING: Place purse in a pillowcase or laundry bag and close. Place straps in a separate pillowcase or laundry bag and close. Keep the straps separated by placing a rubber band around the center of the pillowcase or laundry bag.

Place items in washing machine and set washer for a small load. Add a bath towel and 1/4 cup of Palmolive Liquid detergent without grease cutter. Wash with hot water for 15 minutes. Remove items and rinse them. Squeeze out excess water. Do not put in dryer.

ATTACHING STRAPS: Referring to Fig. 1 below, use knitting needle to make holes through top of purse.

Using needle-nose pliers, pull strap ends through the holes from the outside of purse through the holes on the sides of purse. Repeat on opposite side of purse. Tie straps in a knot at the sides of purse.

DRYING: Place purse on a dry towel on a protected surface. Shape purse and fill with scrunched-up plastic bags to maintain desired shape. Tuck in sides and hold each side with two clothespins.

FINISHING: Attach each side of magnetic closure to the center of a felt piece. With black yarn, hand-sew felt pieces centered along inside top edges of purse.
