Instructions

GAUGE: Working in St st, 5 sts and 7 rows = 1 inch.

Stitches Used:

  • STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st:
  • Row 1 (RS): K across row.
  • Row 2 (WS): P across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2 as directed.
  • C2F: Place next 2 sts on cable needle and hold at front, k 2, k 2 from cable needle.
  • C2B: Place next 2 sts on cable needle and hold at back, k 2, k 2 from cable needle.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. This piece is worked back and forth in rows on a circular needle. Do not work in rounds.
  2. Cast on 105 sts.
  3. TOP Row 1 (RS): * K 15, place stitch marker; repeat from * across row to last 15 sts, k 15: 105 sts, (15 sts at each end and between stitch markers).
  4. Row 2: * K 1, p 6, k 1, p 6, k 1; re­peat from * across row: 105 sts.
  5. Row 3: * K 7, pick up horizontal lp of row below (between sts) and k this st, k in front and back of next st, k 7; repeat from * across row: 119 sts, (17 sts at each end and between stitch markers).
  6. Row 4 and all even-numbered rows (WS): At each end and between stitch markers [K 1, p 6, k 1, p to last 8 sts, k 1, p 6, k 1].
  7. Row 5: At each end and between stitch markers [K 1, C2F, k 2, k in front and back of next st, k to last 8 sts, k 1 in front and back of next st, C2F, k 3].
  8. Row 7: At each end and between stitch markers [K 7, k in front and back of next st, k to last 8 sts, k in front and back of next st, k 7].
  9. Row 9: At each end and between stitch markers [K 3, C2B, k in front and back of next st, k to last 8 sts, k in front and back of next st, k 2, C2B, k 1].
  10. Row 11: Repeat Row 7.
  11. Repeat Rows 5-12 until there are 63 sts at each end and between all stitch markers.
  12. Work Rows 5 and 6 once more: 65 sts at each end and between stitch markers.

SEPARATION

  1. Row 1 (RS): The sec­tions at each end and between stitch markers will now be worked separately. Keeping to established cable pattern, work first 7 sts, k in front and back of next st, k to last 8 sts, k in front and back of next st, keeping to established cable pattern, work last 7 sts to marker: 67 sts.
  2.  * Place next 65 sts on stitch holder; repeat from * until six stitch holders have been used.
  3. Row 2 and all even-numbered rows (WS): K 1, p 6, k 1, p 51, k 1, p 6, k 1: 67 sts.
  4. Row 3: Keeping to established cable pattern, work first 7 sts, p 1, k 51, p 1, keeping to established cable pattern, work last 7 sts: 67 sts.
  5. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until section measures 10 in. from Separation Row 1, ending with a RS row.

BORDER

  1. Row 1 (WS): K 1, p 6, k across to last 7 sts, p 6, k 1: 67 sts.
  2. Row 2: Keeping to established cable pattern, work first 7 sts, p 1, k 51, p 1, keeping to established cable pattern, work last 7 sts: 67 sts.
  3. Rows 3-9: Repeat Rows 1 and 2: 67 sts.
  4. Bind off.
  5. Transfer sts from next stitch holder onto needle, attach yarn and work as for first section.
  6. Repeat with each remaining section.

TOP RIBBING:

  1. With RS facing, pick up cast-on sts along top edge.
  2. Work in k 1, p 1 ribbing for 1-1/2 in., ending with a WS row.
  3. Bind off in k 1, p 1 ribbing, but do not break yarn.

EDGING: Insert crochet hk into last lp on needle, sc in same st. Referring to Fig1aFig1b, and Fig1c, work 1 reverse sc in each st around entire piece to 10 in. from top edge on opposite side. Do not fasten off.

BUTTONHOLES:

  1. Ch 5 for first buttonhole, sk 1/2 in., continue working in reverse sc to 5 in. from top, ch 5, sk 1/2 in. for next buttonhole, continue working in reverse sc to 1/2 in. from top, ch 5, sk 1/2 in. for top buttonhole. Fasten off on top corner for buttonhole.
  2. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

BUTTONS: With RS facing and with slip knot on crochet hk, insert hk in center of opposite edge corresponding to top buttonhole, ch 5, work 1 sc in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch, join with a sl st in last ch made of beginning ch-5. Fasten off. Use tapestry or yarn needle and tails of yarn to fasten button to tree skirt and to weave in all loose ends.

Repeat for remaining two buttons.

FINISHED SIZE: Tree skirt measures about 48 inches across.
