Instructions

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

  • Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.
  • St st: Stockinette stitch
  • Row 1 and all RS rows: Knit each st.
  • Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl each st.
  • Following chart: Follow chart from bottom to top, reading RS or knit side rows from right to left and WS or purl side rows from left to right.
  • When changing colors, drop the color just completed so it can be picked up again when needed. Always twist the strands at color changes to prevent holes. Carry colors loosely along the back (purl side) of work to pick up again when needed. Before you begin, download the Color Key.

DIRECTIONS FOR POINSETTIA COASTER:

  1. To begin crafting your poinsettia coaster, first download the Poinsettia Coaster pattern.
  2. With size 5 needles and white yarn, cast on 29 sts.
  3. Wind a ball of green, pink, red and yellow yarn.
  4. Follow poinsettia chart at right, changing colors as indicated.
  5. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in loose ends on wrong side of coaster.

DIRECTIONS FOR TREE COASTER:

  1. To begin crafting your tree coaster, first download the Tree Coaster pattern.
  2. With size 5 needles and white yarn, cast on 29 sts.
  3. Wind a ball of green and brown yarn.
  4. Follow tree chart below, changing colors as indicated.
  5. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in loose ends on wrong side of coaster.
  6. With hand-sewing needle and gold metallic or white all-purpose thread, sew one sequin to the end of each tree branch and three sequins to the top of the tree.

DIRECTIONS FOR BELL COASTER:

  1. To begin crafting your bell coaster, first download the  Bell Coaster pattern.
  2. With size 5 needles and white yarn, cast on 29 sts.
  3. Wind a ball of black, gray and red yarn.
  4. Follow bell chart below right, changing colors as indicated.
  5. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in loose ends on wrong side of coaster.

BACK (make 1 for each coaster): With size 5 needles and white yarn, cast on 29 sts. Work in St st for 32 rows. Bind off.

FINISHING:

  1. Place a completed coaster front and back together with right sides facing and edges matching. Use yarn or tapestry needle and white yarn to sew seams on three sides, leaving the remaining side of coaster open.
  2. Place a 5- x 4-inch piece of white flannel on top of coaster with edges matching. Use hand-sewing needle and white all-purpose thread to tack edges of flannel in place.
  3. Turn the coaster right side out with the flannel sandwiched in between the knit layers. Use the yarn or tapestry needle and white yarn to hand-sew the opening closed.

FINISHED SIZE:  Each coaster is about 4 inches high x 5 inches wide.

GAUGE: Working in St st on size 5 needles, 6 sts and 8 rows = 1 inch. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size but will not ruin the project.
