GAUGE: When working Sailor’s Rib pattern with larger needles, 23 sts and 29 rows = 4 inches.

Special Abbreviations/Stitches Used:

  • C4F: Place 2 sts on cn and hold in front, k 2, k 2 from cn.
  • C4B: Place 2 sts on cn and hold in back, k 2, k 2 from cn.
  • K-B 1: Knit into back of loop (enter st from the back instead of the front to twist the st).
  • P-B 1: Purl into back of loop (enter st from the back).
  • P2 TOG-B: Insert right needle from back first into second st on left needle, then into first st on left needle, p 2 tog.

DOUBLE DECREASE: Double dec

Sl next 2 sts knitwise, k 1, p2sso (pass 2 sl sts over knitted st).

GARTER STITCH:

  • Every Row: Knit.
  • KNIT 1, PURL 1 RIBBING: K 1, p 1 rib
  • Row 1: K 1, (p 1, k 1) across row.
  • Row 2: K 2, (p 1, k 1) across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

SLIP, SLIP, KNIT: SSK (A dec sloping to the left)

With yarn in back of work, sl two sts knitwise one at a time, insert tip of left-hand needle into front of both slipped sts, then knit sts tog.

CABLE PATTERN: (Panel of 6 sts)

  • Row 1 (RS): P 1, k 4, p 1.
  • Rows 2 and 4: K 1, p 4, k 1.
  • Row 3: P 1, C4F or C4B, p 1.
  • Repeat Rows 1 through 4 for pattern.

SAILOR’S RIB PATTERN: (Multiple of 5 sts + 1)

  • Row 1 (RS): K-B 1, * p 1, k 2, p 1, K-B 1, repeat from * across.
  • Row 2: P-B 1, * k 1, p 2, k 1, P-B 1, repeat from * across.
  • Row 3: K-B 1, * p 4, K-B 1, repeat from * across.
  • Row 4: P-B 1, * k 4, P-B 1, repeat from * across.
  • Repeat Rows 1 through 4 for pattern.

CABLE CAST-ON: (for buttonholes):

Working into last st on needle, knit st and place it on left needle; insert right needle below left needle between previous 2 sts and knit a st and place it on the next needle, repeat for additional sts.

DIRECTIONS: 

BACK: With smaller needles, cast on 79(83) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 2 inches, ending with RS row.

  • Knit 1 row, inc 8(10) sts evenly spaced: 87(97).
  • Change to larger needles, setting up and beginning patterns as follows:
  • Row 1 (Begin patterns): K 2(2), p 1(1); place marker, work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across next 36(41) sts, place marker, p 1, inc 1 in each of next 2 sts, p 1, K-B 1, p 1, inc 1 in each of next 2 sts, p 1, place marker; work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across next 36(41) sts, place marker, p 1(1), k 2(2): 91(101) sts.
  • Row 2: Slipping markers from one needle to the next in each rem row as you work, p 2(2), k 1(1), work Row 2 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 1, p 4, k 1, P-B 1, k 1, p 4, k 1, work Row 2 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 1(1), p 2(2).
  • Row 3: P 3(3); work Row 3 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, p 1, C4B, p 1, P-B 1, p 1, C4F, p 1, work Row 3 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, p 3(3).
  • Row 4: K 3(3); work Row 4 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 1, p 4, k 1, P-B 1, k 1, p 4, k 1, work Row 4 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker; k 3(3).
  • Row 5: K 2(2), p 1(1); work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker; p 1, k 4, p 1, P-B 1, p 1, k 4, p 1; work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 2(2), p 1(1).
  • Continue to repeat Rows 2 through 5 until back measures 9(10) inches to underarm, ending with a WS row. (Mark row with a piece of contrasting yarn.)
  • Armhole Shaping: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then on next 3 RS rows, work k 1, SSK, work in pattern to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1 and keep both edge sts in garter st: 77(87) sts at end of decreases.
  • Continue to work even in pattern until armhole measures 7-1/2(8-1/2) inches, ending on a WS row and working (p 2 tog) twice in top of each cable in this last row: 73(83) sts.
  • Slip first and last 21(22) shoulder sts and center 31(39) back neck sts onto st holders. Cut yarn.

RIGHT FRONT (RF): With smaller needles, cast on 41(45) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 2 inches, ending with RS row.

  • Knit 1 row, inc 4(5) sts evenly spaced: 45(50).
  • Change to larger needles, setting up and beginning patterns as follows:
  • RF Row 1 (Begin patterns): K 1, K-B 1; place marker, p 1, inc 1 in each of next 2 sts, p 1, place marker; work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across next 36(41) sts, place marker, p 1(1), k 2(2): 47(52) sts.
  • RF Row 2 (WS): P 2(2), k 1(1), work Row 2 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 1, p 4, k 1, P-B 1, k 1.
  • RF Row 3 (RS): P 1, K-B 1; work Row 3 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, p 1, C4B, p 1, K-B 1, p 3(3).
  • RF Row 4: K 3(3); work Row 4 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker, k 1, p 4, k 1, P-B 1, k 1.
  • RF Row 5:  K 1, K-B 1; work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across to marker; k 2(2), p 1(1).
  • Continue to repeat Rows 2 through 5 until front matches back at underarm, ending with a WS row and marking last row as for back. Work 1 more RS row.
  • RF Armhole Shaping: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next WS row, then on next 3 RS rows, work in pattern to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1 and keep last edge st in garter st: 40(45) sts at end of decreases.
  • Continue to work even in pattern until armhole measures 4(4-1/2) inches, ending on a WS row and working (p 2 tog) twice in top of cable in this last row: 38(43) sts.
  • RF Neck Shaping: Row 1 (RS): Bind off first 12(16) sts at neck edge, complete row in established pattern: 26(27).
  • RF Row 2 and rem WS rows: Work in established pattern.
  • RF Row 3: K 1, SSK, complete row in established pattern.
  • RF Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3: 22(23) sts remain at end of Row 9.
  • Work even in pattern until front matches back at shoulder, ending on a RS row with k 2 tog at neck edge of last row.
  • Shoulder Joining: Place 21(22) left back shoulder sts on smaller needle. Hold smaller needle with back sts and larger needle with right shoulder sts parallel with RS facing and work a plain bind-off as follows: Hold both pieces in the left hand, then * knit the first st on each needle simultaneously. Work the next two sts together in the same manner. Slip the first st over the second one, binding off one st. Repeat from * across row. (A ridge will be produced on wrong side of joining.) Cut yarn and pull end through last st.

LEFT FRONT: With smaller needles, cast on 41(45) sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 2 inches, ending with RS row.

  • Knit 1 row, inc 4(5) sts evenly spaced: 45(50).
  • Change to larger needles, setting up and beginning patterns as follows:
  • LF Row 1 (Begin patterns): K 2(2), p 1(1); place marker, work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across next 36(41) sts, place marker, p 1, inc 1 in each of next 2 sts, p 1, K-B 1, k 1: 47(52) sts.
  • Work as for Right Front, reversing pattern placement as set up in LF Row 1 and working C4F cable instead of C4B for cable rows, until fronts match at underarm, ending with a WS row and marking last row as for back.
  • LF Armhole Shaping: Bind off 4 sts at beg of next RS row, then on next 3 RS rows, work k 1, SSK, then work in pattern to end of row and keeping first edge st in garter st: 40(45) sts at end of decreases.
  • Continue to work even in pattern until armhole measures 4(4-1/2) inches, ending on a RS row and working (p 2 tog) twice in top of cable in this last row: 38(43) sts.
  • LF Neck Shaping: Row 1 (WS): Bind off first 12(16) sts at neck edge, complete row in established pattern: 26(27).
  • LF Row 2: Complete row in established pattern to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1.
  • LF Row 3 and rem WS rows: Work in established pattern.
  • LF Rows 4-9: Repeat Rows 2 and 3: 22(23) sts remain at end of LF Row 8.
  • Work even in pattern until front matches back at shoulder, ending on a RS row with k 2 tog at neck edge of last row.
  • Shoulder Joining: Join left front shoulder to left back shoulder as directed for right front.

SLEEVES [(S) Make two]: With smaller needles, cast on 37(39) sts. Work k 1, p 1 rib for 2 inches, ending with a WS row. Knit 1 row, inc 12 sts evenly spaced: 49(51) sts.

  • Change to larger needles, setting up and beginning patterns as follows:
  • S Row 1 [(RS) Begin patterns]: K 1, p 0(1), k 2, p 1; place marker, work Row 1 of Sailor’s Rib pattern across next 41 sts (both sizes), place marker, p 1, k 2, p 0(1), k 1.
  • Work in Sailor’s Rib pattern until piece measures 13(16) inches; working additional sts into pattern, begin with third row to inc 1 st at each side of work on every RS row 6 times, then every fourth row 13(17) times as follows: K 1, inc 1 in next st, work in pattern across to last st, inc 1 in next st, k 1. End with a RS row: 87(97) sts.
  • Bind off 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then on next 5 rows, dec as follows: On RS rows, work k 1, SSK, work in pattern to last 3 sts, k 2 tog, k 1. On WS rows, work p 1, p 2 tog, work in pattern to last 3 sts , p 2 tog-B, p 1. End with a WS row: 69(79) sts at end of decs. Bind off rem sts in purl. Cut yarn.

BORDER EDGING (BE): With smaller needle, RS facing and marking sts with safety pins, join yarn at lower right front corner, pick up and knit 2 sts for each 3 rows along front, marking last st; pick up and knit 1 st in each bound-off st across neck; pick up and knit 2 sts for each 3 rows along neck edge, marking first st with safety pin; knit across back neck sts from holder; pick up and knit sts along left neck and front edge, marking corner sts as directed for right front.

  • BE Row 1 (WS): Sl 1 purlwise, knit to first marker, p 1, knit to fourth marker, p 1, knit to end.
  • BE Row 2: Sl 1 purlwise, knit across, inc 1 on each side of first and last markers and working a double dec at second and third markers.
  • BE Rows 3-9: Repeat Rows 1 and 2, working 5 buttonholes evenly spaced on the appropriate side (left for boys, right for girls) in Row 5 and ending with repeat of Row 1. [For each buttonhole: Bring yarn to front of work, sl 1 purlwise, yarn to back; sl next st and pass first st over it, (1 st bound off); bind off 2 more sts in same manner; return last st to left needle, turn; with yarn in back, cast on 4 sts using cable cast-on, bringing yarn to the front before placing last st on needle; turn; sl first st on left needle to right needle, pass last cast-on st over it and continue row.]
  • Bind off in purl on RS.

FINISHING: Sew sleeves to edges of fronts and backs, matching underarm of sleeves to markers at front and back underarms and sleeve center to shoulder seams. Sew front to back at sides continuing across sleeve underarm seams.

  • Use matching thread to hand-sew buttons to opposite front band corresponding to buttonholes.
  • Weave in all yarn ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for a Child’s size 6-8. Changes for size 10-12 are in parentheses. Actual chest measurements are 30(34) inches.
