Instructions

GAUGE: Working with two strands together in St st (k 1 row, p 1 row), 3 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Using two strands of yarn as one, make three balls of red and three balls of white with approximately 30 yd. of yarn on each ball.
  2. When changing colors, always pick up new yarn from under dropped yarn to prevent holes.
  3. To carry yarn along the back of work, twist the working yarn around the carried yarn every two or three stitches.
  4. With two strands of yarn held together as one, cast on 8 sts of red, 8 sts of white, 8 sts of red, 8 sts of white and 8 sts of red: 40 sts.
  5. Row 1: Knit across row, changing yarn to maintain the established color sequence.
  6. Row 2: Changing yarn as needed to maintain established color sequence, k 8, p 8, k 8, p 8, k 8.
  7. Rows 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11: Repeat Row 1.
  8. Rows 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12: Repeat Row 2.
  9. Row 13: Attach white; k 8 with white while carrying red along back; drop white; pick up red and k 8 with red while carrying new white along back; drop red; pick up white and k 8 with white while carrying new red along back; drop white; pick up same red; k 8 with red while carrying the new white along back; drop red and fasten off one set of red yarns; pick up white and k 8 with white.
  10. Rows 14, 16, 18, 20, 22 and 24: Changing yarn to maintain established color sequence, p 8, k 8, p 8, k 8, p 8.
  11. Rows 15, 17, 19, 21 and 23: Changing yarn as needed to maintain established color sequence, k across row.
  12. Row 25: Attach red, k 8 with red while carrying the white along back; drop red; pick up white and k 8 with white while carrying new red along back; drop white; pick up red and k 8 with red while carrying new white along back; drop red and pick up white; k 8 with white while carrying new red along back; drop white and fasten off one set of white yarns; pick up red and k 8 with red.
  13. Rows 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 and 36: Changing yarn to maintain established color sequence, k 8, p 8, k 8, p 8, k 8.
  14. Rows 27, 29, 31, 33 and 35: Changing yarn as needed to maintain established color sequence, k across row.
  15. Repeat Rows 13-36 two more times, changing yarn to maintain established color sequence throughout. Bind off in knit, changing yarn to maintain established color sequence.
  16. FINISHING: For fringe, cut forty-eight 5-in. pieces of red yarn and thirty-two 5-in. pieces of white yarn. Fold a piece of yarn in half and use crochet hook to pull folded end (loop) through matching color stitch on end of the place mat. Draw ends through loop of yarn and pull ends to tighten loop. In the same way, add matching fringe to remaining stitches at each end of place mat.

FINISHED SIZE: Place mat measures about 14 inches x 22-1/2 inches, including fringe.
