GAUGE: Working in garter st for blanket, 5 sts and 7 rows = 1 inch.

Working in St st for booties, 5 sts and 8 rows = 1 inch.

KNITTING REMINDERS:

Working in rounds: Place sts on three double-pointed needles as directed. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the round, moving the marker with each round worked. Being careful not to twist sts, join the last st to the first st by pulling up yarn firmly and making first st with fourth needle.

Stitches Used:

Garter stitch: Garter st:

  • Row 1 (RS): K across row.
  • Row 2 (WS): K across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2 as directed.

Stockinette stitch: St st:

  • Row 1 (RS): K across row.
  • Row 2 (WS): P across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2 as directed.

FINISHED SIZE: Blanket measures about 29 inches long x 30-1/2 inches wide. Booties fit infants age 6 months to 1 year.

DIRECTIONS:

BLANKET: Cast on 153 sts on circular needle. Work even on 153 sts throughout.

Bottom Border Rows 1-6: Work in garter st.

  1. Pattern Row 1: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, p 1, [k 7, p 1] across to last 4 sts, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  2. Pattern Row 2: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, k 2, [p 5, k 3] across to last 6 sts, k 2, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  3. Pattern Row 3: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, p 3, [k 3, p 5] across to last 7 sts, p 3, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  4. Pattern Row 4: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, k 4, [p 1, k 7] across to last 8 sts, k 4, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  5. Pattern Row 5: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, p 3, [k 3, p 5] across to last 7 sts, p 3, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  6. Pattern Row 6: Work first 4 sts in established garter st, k 2, [p 5, k 3] across to last 6 sts, k 2, work last 4 sts in established garter st.
  7. Repeat Pattern Rows 1-6 until piece measures about 30-1/2 inches, ending with Pattern Row 1.
  8. Top Border Rows 1-6: Work in established garter st.
  9. Bind off loosely. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in loose ends.

BOOTIES (make 2): Cast on 28 sts on three double-pointed needles, placing 10 sts on two of the needles and 8 sts on remaining needle; join, being careful not to twist sts.

  1. Rounds 1-2: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * around: 28 sts.
  2. Rounds 3-4: * P 1, k 1; repeat from * around: 28 sts.
  3. Rounds 5-16: Repeat Rounds 1-4: 28 sts.
  4. Round 17: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * around: 28 sts.
  5. Round 18: * K2tog, yo; repeat from * around: 28 sts.
  6. Round 19: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * around: 28 sts.
  7. Heel setup: K 7 sts from left needle, sl first 7 sts from right needle onto same needle: 14 sts on needle.
  8. Place remaining 14 sts for instep on needles as follows: sl remaining st from third needle to second needle, sl 4 sts from second needle to first needle: 7 sts on each instep needle.
  9. Heel Row 1: Working from needle with 14 sts, sl 1, p 13, turn: 14 sts.
  10. Heel Row 2: Sl 1, k 13, turn: 14 sts.
  11. Heel Rows 3-10: Repeat Heel Rows 1-2: 14 sts.
  12. Turning Heel: Row 1: Sl 1, k 3, k2tog, k 1, k2tog, k 1, turn.
  13. Row 2: Sl 1, p 2, p2tog, p 1, turn.
  14. Row 3: Sl 1, k 3, k2tog, k 1, turn.
  15. Row 4: Sl 1, p 4, p2tog, p 1, turn.
  16. Row 5: Sl 1, k 5, k2tog, k 1: 8 sts on needle.
  17. Foot: Round 1: Pick up and k 5 sts along heel edge, [k 1, p 1] across 14 instep sts. Pick up and k 5 along other heel edge, k 4 heel sts, sl remaining 4 heel sts to left needle:  32 sts (9 sts each on left and right needles and 14 sts on instep needle).
  18. Round 2: K 6, k2tog, k 1, [k 1, p 1] across 14 instep sts, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 6: 30 sts.
  19. Round 3: K 8 heel sts, [p 1, k 1] across 14 instep sts, k 8: 30 sts.
  20. Round 4: K 5, k2tog, k 1, [p 1, k 1] across 14 instep sts, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 5: 28 sts.
  21. Work even for 4 in. (or to the desired foot length), keeping 14 instep sts in established pattern: 7 sts on first needle, 14 sts on second needle, 7 sts on third needle.
  22. Toe Round 1: K 4, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to last 3 sts on same needle, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of round: 24 sts.
  23. Toe Round 2: K around: 24 sts.
  24. Toe Round 3: K 3, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to last 3 sts on same needle, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of round: 20 sts.
  25. Toe Round 4: K around: 20 sts.
  26. Toe Round 5: K 2, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to last 3 sts on same needle, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of round: 16 sts.
  27. Toe Round 6: K around: 16 sts.
  28. Toe Round 7: K 1, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to last 3 sts on same needle, k2tog, k 1, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso, k to end of round: 12 sts.
  29. Cut yarn, leaving an 8-in. tail. Thread tail onto yarn or tapestry needle. Run yarn through remaining sts twice. Fasten off.
  30. Thread a length of 1/8-in.-wide ribbon through holes in Row 18. Tie ribbon ends in a bow.
  31. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in loose ends.
  32. Wrap up the blanket and booties and present to the mother-to-be at her baby shower…or to the newest member in your family!
