GAUGE: 16 sts and 20 rows = 4 in. To save time, take time to check gauge.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

  • Garter stitch: K all sts on RS and WS rows.
  • Stockinette stitch: K RS rows; p WS rows.
  • K2tog: K 2 sts together (decrease).
  • Kfb: K into the front and back of the next st (increase).

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, download Moose sweater Chart.

  1. BODY: With light brown yarn, cast on 96 sts.
  2. BD-Row 1: K3, (k1, p1) to last 3 sts, k3.
  3. BD-Rows 2-5: Repeat BD-Row 1.
  4. BD-Row 6 (RS): K across row.
  5. BD-Row 7: K3, p90, k3.
  6. BD-Row 8: K3, join white yarn and k the center 90 sts using Border Chart (15 repeats), k3.
  7. BD-Row 9: K3, p the center 90 sts using Border Chart (15 repeats), k3.
  8. BD-Row 10: K across row.
  9. BD-Row 11: K3, p90, k3.
  10. BD-Row 12: K3, join dark brown yarn and knit the center 90 sts using Moose Chart (six complete repeats of moose and one repeat omitting the final st on chart), k3.
  11. BD-Row 13: K3, p the center 90 sts using Moose Chart (in the first repeat, omit the first st on chart, then continue with 6 complete repeats), k3.
  12. BD-Rows 14-21: K3, continue to follow rows on Moose Chart, k3.
  13. BD-Row 22: K across row.
  14. BD-Row 23: K3, p90, k3.
  15. BD-Row 24: K3, join white yarn and k the center 90 sts using Border Chart (15 repeats), k3.
  16. BD-Row 25: K3, p the center 90 sts using Border Chart (15 repeats), k3.
  17. BD-Rows 26-45: Repeat BD-Rows 22-23 ten more times.

BACK AND FRONT PIECES: Knit 22 sts and put on holder (right front piece), bind off next 6 sts, k 40 sts (back piece), bind off next 6 sts, put remaining 22 sts on a holder (left front piece).

BACK: Working with the 40 sts for back, knit as follows:

  1. BK-Row 1: P across row.
  2. BK-Row 2: K1, k2tog, k to last 3 sts, k2tog, k1: 38 sts.
  3. BK-Rows 3-26: Repeat BK-Rows 1-2 twelve more times: 14 sts.
  4. Bind off remaining 14 sts.

LEFT FRONT: Put the 22 sts from holder onto needle, ready to work RS. Knit across the stitches.

  1. LF-Row 1 (WS):  K3, p19.
  2. LF-Row 2: K1, k2tog, k19: 21 sts.

FINISHING: Weave in ends. Block. Using light brown yarn and yarn needle, sew the collar to the neck of sweater. In same way, sew the zipper along the front edge.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for Child size 2 sweater measuring about 24 inches around and 14 inches in length.
