FINISHED SIZE: 3 inches in diameter

Ornament is made in 2 sections. Crochet each half separately and join them as directed in the instructions that follow.

TOP HALF SECTION: Beginning with hanging loop, ch 5, sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch.

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st in end of first sc on hanging loop, ch 4, sl st in end of fourth sc on hanging loop.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), dc in same st, 2 dc in next 4 ch, 2 dc in end of hanging loop, 2 dc in next 4 chs, join with sl st: 20 sts.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around, join with sl st: 40 sts.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, [dc in each of next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, join with sl st: 50 sts.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in next 8 sts, 2 dc in next st, [dc in each of next 9 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, join with sl st: 55 sts.

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in next 9 sts, 2 dc in next st, [dc in each of next 10 sts, 2 dc in next st] around, join with sl st: 60 sts.

Rounds 7-8: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st.

Round 9: Working in front loop only, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st.

Round 10: Fold Round 9 to the back, sl st each dc to back loop of previous round, creating the center ridge.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

BOTTOM HALF SECTION:

Round 1: Ch 60, join with sl st to first ch forming a loop, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each st around, join with sl st: 60 sts.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st: 60 sts.

Row 1: Ch 3, dc in each of next 11 sts, dc2tog for next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 2: Dc in each of next 9 sts, dc2tog for next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Dc in each of next 7 sts, dc2tog for next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 4: Dc in each of next 5 sts, dc2tog for next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 5: Dc in each of next 3 sts, dc2tog for next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 6: Dc in next st, dc2tog for next 2 sts, fasten off.

Skip next st on Round 2, join thread with sl st in next st, repeat Rows 1-6 three more times to complete 4 design sections on perimeter of Round 2.

Run a short piece of thread through the ends of the design points and tie off to join bottom together (there will be a small hole at bottom after joining).

Run a piece of thread through chs on perimeter of Round 1, leaving ends free for adjustment during stiffening process.

FINISHING: Cover the two Styrofoam balls with plastic wrap. Soak crocheted top and bottom halves of ornament in fabric stiffener. Shape a half over each ball. If needed, use thread on perimeter of bottom half to pull tight for sizing adjustment. Let halves dry. Remove stiffened halves from balls.

Place 3/4-in. jingle bell inside one half. Glue the halves together along the ridge on top half. Let dry.

For hanger, insert ribbon through small hanging loop at top of ornament. Tie a knot in ribbon ends.
