Instructions

GAUGE: With smaller hk, 5 scs and 5 ribbing rows = 1 inch. With larger hk, 16 dcs and 9 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • Dc 2 tog: Yo, insert hk in first st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk, yo, insert hk in second st and pull up a lp, yo and draw yarn through 2 lps on hk, yo and draw yarn through 3 lps on hk.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, refer to gauge, techniques/stitches used, etc.

SWEATER:

  1. Back: B-ribbing Row 1: With smaller hk and green, ch 6 (remembering that the lp on hk never counts as a ch). Sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch: count 5 scs.
  2. B-ribbing Rows 2-42: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc: count 5 scs each row. Fasten off at end of Row 42.
  3. B-Row 1: With larger hk and blue, join yarn with a sl st in end of B-ribbing Row 42; ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in end of each remaining row: count 42 dcs.
  4. B-Row 2: Ch 3 (always counts as 1 dc), turn; * yo, insert hk under the horizontal bar just below the front lp of next dc (just to the right of the hole where you would ordinarily insert the hk) and complete 1 dc; rep from * across, ending with a dc in top of turning ch: count 42 dcs.
  5. B-Row 3: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc in each dc across (always counting the turning ch as 1 dc): count 42 dcs. (Except where instructions say otherwise, dc in both lps of the st below.)
  6. B-Rows 4-16: Rep B-Rows 2 and 3, ending with a B-Row 2.
  7. B-Row 17: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] twice, dc in each dc across until 4 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] twice: count 38 dcs.
  8. B-Row 18: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] three times, dc in each dc across until 6 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] three times: count 32 dcs.
  9. B-Row 19: Rep B-Row 18: count 26 dcs.
  10. B-Rows 20-24: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc in each dc across: count 26 dcs. Fasten off at the end of B-Row 24.
  11. Left front: LF-ribbing Row 1: Rep B-ribbing Row 1.
  12. LF-ribbing Rows 2-16: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc: count 5 scs each row. Fasten off at end of Row 16.
  13. LF-Row 1: With larger hk and blue, join yarn with a sl st in end of LF-ribbing Row 16; ch 3, dc in end of each remaining row: count 16 dcs.
  14. LF-Row 2: Rep B-Row 2: count 16 dcs.
  15. LF-Row 3: Rep B-Row 3: count 16 dcs.
  16. LF-Rows 4-12: Rep B-Rows 2 and 3, ending with a B-Row 2.
  17. LF-Row 13: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc in each dc across until 2 dcs remain, dc 2 tog: count 15 dcs.
  18. LF-Row 14: Rep B-Row 2: count 15 dcs.
  19. LF-Row 15: Rep LF-Row 13: count 14 dcs.
  20. LF-Row 16: Rep B-Row 2: count 14 dcs.
  21. LF-Row 17: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc 2 tog, dc in each dc across until 4 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] twice: count 11 dcs.
  22. LF-Row 18: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] twice, dc in each dc across until 4 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] twice: count 7 dcs.
  23. LF-Row 19: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc in each dc across until turning ch remains (leave turning ch unworked): count 6 dcs.
  24. LF-Rows 20-24: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc in each dc across: count 6 dcs. Fasten off at the end of LF-Row 24.
  25. Right front: RF-ribbing Rows 1-16: Rep LF-ribbing Rows 1-16.
  26. RF-Rows 1-12: Rep LF-Rows 1-12.
  27. RF-Row 13: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc 2 tog, dc in each dc across: count 15 dcs.
  28. RF-Row 14: Rep B-Row 2: count 15 dcs.
  29. RF-Row 15: Rep RF-Row 13: count 14 dcs.
  30. RF-Row 16: Rep B-Row 2: count 14 dcs.
  31. RF-Row 17: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] twice, dc in each dc across until 2 dcs remain, dc 2 tog: count 11 dcs.
  32. RF-Row 18: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] twice, dc in each dc across until 4 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] twice: count 7 dcs.
  33. RF-Row 19: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, dc 2 tog, dc in each dc across: count 6 dcs.
  34. RF-Rows 20-24: Rep LF-Rows 20-24.
  35. SLEEVE (make 2): S-ribbing Row 1: With smaller hk and blue, ch 6. Sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch: count 5 scs.
  36. S-ribbing Rows 2-18: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc: count 5 scs each row. Fasten off at end of Row 18, leaving a long tail for sewing. Thread tapestry needle with yarn tail and sew S-ribbing Row 1 to S-ribbing Row 18 to form a ring.
  37. S-Rnd 1: With larger hk and green, join yarn with a sl st in end of S-ribbing Row 18; ch 3, dc in end of each remaining row, join with a sl st in top of turning ch: count 18 dcs.
  38. S-Rnd 2: Ch 3; * work 2 dcs in next dc, dc in next dc; rep from * around, ending with 2 dcs in last dc, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 27 dcs.
  39. S-Rnds 3-7: Ch 3; dc in each dc around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 27 dcs.
  40. S-Row 8: Beginning to work in rows rather than rnds, ch 3, turn; dc in each dc across: count 27 dcs.
  41. S-Rows 9-11: Ch 3, turn; dc in each dc across: count 27 dcs each row.
  42. S-Row 12: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] twice, dc in each dc across until 4 dcs remain, [dc 2 tog] twice: count 23 dcs.
  43. S-Row 13: Rep S-Row 12: count 19 dcs.
  44. S-Row 14: Ch 3, turn; sk first dc, [dc 2 tog] three times, dc in each dc across until 6 sts remain, [dc 2 tog] three times: count 13 dcs. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing.
  45. FRONT RIBBING BAND: Band-Row 1: With smaller hk and green, ch 7. Sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch: count 6 scs.
  46. Band-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc: count 6 scs.
  47. Band-Row 3: Rep Band-Row 2.
  48. Band-Row 4: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of first 2 scs, ch 2, sk 2 scs for buttonhole, sc in back lp of last 2 scs.
  49. Band-Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc and ch across: count 6 scs.
  50. Band-Rows 6-11: Rep Band-Row 2.
  51. Band-Rows 12-13: Rep Band-Rows 4 and 5 for second buttonhole.
  52. Band-Rows 14-19: Rep Band-Row 2.
  53. Band-Rows 20-21: Rep Band-Rows 4 and 5 for third buttonhole.
  54. Band-Rows 22-27: Rep Band-Row 2.
  55. Band-Rows 28-29: Rep Band-Rows 4 and 5 for fourth buttonhole.
  56. Band-Rows 30-124: Rep Band-Row 2. Fasten off at the end of Band-Row 124.
  57. ASSEMBLY: With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew left and right front shoulders to back shoulders.
  58. In the same way, sew front ribbing band around sweater, positioning the buttonholes on left front for boys and on right front for girls.
  59. Sew side seams, stopping where decs begin. Sew sleeves to armholes. Weave in loose ends.
  60. With matching thread and hand-sewing needle, sew buttons to band opposite buttonholes.

HAT: With larger hk and green, ch 35.

  1. H-Row 1: Dc in fourth ch from hk (counts as 1 dc) and in each remaining ch: count 33 dcs.
  2. H-Row 2: Ch 3 (always counts as 1 dc), turn; sk first dc and dc in back lp only of each remaining st and top of turning ch: count 33 dcs.
  3. H-Row 3: Drop green, pick up blue, ch 3, turn; sk first dc and dc in back lp only of each remaining dc and top of turning ch: count 33 dcs.
  4. H-Row 4: With blue, rep H-Row 2.
  5. H-Row 5: Drop blue, pick up green and rep H-Row 2.
  6. H-Row 6: With green, rep H-Row 2.
  7. H-Rows 7-24: Rep H-Rows 3-6, ending with an H-Row 4 so there are a total of 12 stripes. Fasten off at end of H-Row 24, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  8. Thread tapestry needle with yarn tail and sew H-Row 1 to H-Row 24, forming a tube.
  9. Thread tapestry needle with either color yarn and weave yarn through sts around one open edge. Pull yarn tight to gather the end closed. Tie off and weave in loose ends. Turn up cuff.

MITTENS (make 2):

  1. M-ribbing Row 1: With smaller hk and green, ch 7. Sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch: count 6 scs.
  2. M-ribbing Rows 2-16: Ch 1, turn; sc in back lp of each sc: count 6 scs each row. Fasten off at end of Row 16, leaving a long tail for sewing. Thread tapestry needle with yarn tail and sew M-ribbing Row 1 to M-ribbing Row 16 to form a ring.
  3. M-Rnd 1: With larger hk and blue, join yarn with a sl st in end of M-ribbing Row 16; ch 3, dc in end of each remaining row, join with a sl st in top of turning ch: count 16 dcs.
  4. M-Rnds 2-5: Ch 3; dc in each dc around, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 16 dcs each rnd. Fasten off at the end of M-Rnd 5, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  5. Thread tapestry needle with tail and weave through sts of M-Rnd 5. Pull yarn tight to close this end and fasten off.
  6. With smaller hk and blue, make a 34-inch-long chain. Sew a mitten to each end of chain. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Sweater ensemble fits infants size 3 to 6 months.
