Instructions

GAUGE: Working in afghan knit stitch, 4 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch.

Special Stitches:

  • Afghan crochet is worked using an afghan hook.
  • Each row is worked in two parts. First the loops are drawn onto the hook and then they are worked off the hook.

AFGHAN FOUNDATION STITCH:

  • First half: Using afghan hk, pick up the number of sts required. Insert the hk into first st from front to back, yo and draw up a lp. Keeping all lps on hk, draw up a lp in each specified st across. Do not turn work.
  • Second half: To work lps off, yo and draw through 1 lp, * yo and draw through 2 lps; repeat from * across until only 1 lp remains on the hk. The last lp on the hk is the first lp of the next row. Do not turn work.
  • This row forms the foundation of the afghan stitch.

AFGHAN KNIT STITCH:

  • Work first and second half of afghan foundation stitch and then work first and second half of afghan knit stitch as follows to complete one row of afghan knit stitch:
  • First half: Holding yarn to back of work skip first vertical bar; *insert hk between next set of vertical bars and under ch to back of work, draw up a lp to front of work; keeping all lps on hk, repeat from * across.
  • Second half: Yo and draw through 1 lp, * yo and draw through 2 lps; repeat from * across until only 1 lp remains on the hk. Retain lp for start of next row.
  • After a few rows, your work will have the appearance of stockinette knitting.

DIRECTIONS:

HATBAND:

  1. Row 1: With crochet hk, ch 5, work 1 sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across, ch 1, turn: 4 scs.
  2. Rows 2-62 (2-66): Working in back lps only, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. At end of Row 62 (66) retain lp of last sc. Do not turn.

HAT:

  1. Row 1: With afghan hk, work afghan foundation stitch, working in end of each sc row of hatband: 63 (67) sts.
  2. Rows 2-21 (2-26): Work afghan knit stitch.
  3. Row 22 (27): Work first half of afghan knit stitch row. For second half, yo and draw through 2 lps, * yo and draw through 3 lps; repeat from * across, leaving 1 lp on hk.
  4. Rows 23-24 (28-29): Repeat Row 22 (27), working grouped sts from Row 22 (27) as one st and leaving 1 lp on hk.
  5. Cut yarn, leaving a 30-in.-long tail of yarn. Yo and pull yarn through last lp. Using tapestry or yarn needle, weave yarn through last row made. Draw up yarn tightly to gather top of hat.
  6. Fold hat with right sides together and stitch seam with tapestry needle and tail of yarn, matching ends of rows. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Turn hat right side out.

POM-POM: Wrap yarn around 3-in. square of cardboard about 75 times. Carefully remove yarn from cardboard. Tie loops of yarn together tightly in middle with a scrap of yarn, leaving a tail of yarn. Cut through loops at both ends. Fluff pom-pom and trim yarn as needed. Sew pom-pom to center top of hat.

MITTENS (make two):

  1. BAND: Row 1: With crochet hk, ch 5, work 1 sc in second ch from hk and in each ch across, ch 1, turn: 4 scs.
  2. Rows 2-20 (2-24): Working in back lps only, sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn. At end of Row 20 (24) retain lp of last sc. Do not turn.
  3. HAND: Row 1: With afghan hk, work afghan foundation stitch, working in ends of sc rows of band: 21 (25) sts.
  4. Rows 2-12 (2-16): Work afghan knit stitch.
  5. Row 13 (17): Work first half of afghan knit stitch row. For second half, yo and draw through 2 lps; * yo and draw through 3 lps; repeat from * across, leaving 1 lp on hk.
  6. Row 14 (18): Repeat Row 13 (17), working grouped sts from Row 13 (17) as one st and leaving 1 lp on hk.
  7. Cut yarn, leaving a 24-in.-long tail of yarn. Yo and pull yarn through last lp. Using tapestry or yarn needle, weave yarn through last row made. Draw up yarn tightly to gather tip of mitten.
  8. Fold mitten with right sides together and stitch seam, using tapestry needle and tail of yarn. Fasten off and weave in loose ends. Turn mitten right side out.

MITTEN CORD: Using crochet hk, attach yarn in seam of first mitten with a sc; ch to make a 30-in.-long cord. Attach cord to seam of second mitten with 2 scs, turn, sl st in each ch across to first mitten; work 1 sc in seam of first mitten, sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions for hat and mittens are for Infant size 6-12 months. Changes for size 18 months are in parentheses. Hat measures about 18 inches around and is about 6-1/2 inches high without tassel. Mittens are about 6 inches around the palm and are about 4 inches long.
