Instructions

GAUGE: In St st, using bulky-weight yarn and size 10 needles, 3.5 sts and 5 rows = 1 inch.

KNITTING REMINDERS:

  • Working in rounds: Cast on sts on dp needles. Being careful not to twist sts, join last st to first st by pulling up yarn firmly and making next st with fourth needle. Place a marker between first 2 sts at beginning of round and move marker with each round worked.
  • Changing colors: To avoid holes when changing colors, always pick up  the new color of yarn from beneath the dropped yarn.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, download Bear Parts.

HEAD: With ivory, cast on 4 sts each on three dp needles. This is the beginning of the nose: 12 sts.

  1. Rounds 1-2: K around: 12 sts.
  2. Round 3: K and inc in the first st, k the next st; * k and inc in the next st, k the next st; rep from * around: 18 sts.
  3. Rounds 4-5: K around: 18 sts.
  4. Round 6: K around, inc 1 st in every third st: 24 sts.
  5. Rounds 7-8: K around: 24 sts.
  6. Round 9: K around, inc 1 st in every fourth st: 30 sts.
  7. Rounds 10-11: K around: 30 sts.
  8. Round 12: K around, inc 1 st in every fifth st: 36 sts.
  9. Rounds 13-14: K around: 36 sts.
  10. Round 15: K around, inc 1 st in every third st: 48 sts.
  11. Rounds 16-17: K around: 48 sts.
  12. Round 18: K around, inc 1 st in every fourth st: 60 sts.
  13. Rounds 19-20: K around: 60 sts.
  14. Round 21: K around, inc 1 st in every third st: 80 sts.
  15. Rounds 22-27: K around: 80 sts.
  16. Round 28: K around, dec 1 st every fourth st: 60 sts.
  17. Rounds 29-33: K around: 60 sts.
  18. Round 34: K around, dec 1 st every fourth st: 45 sts.
  19. Round 35: K around.
  20. Repeat Rounds 34-35 until 26 sts remain.
  21. Dec every fifth st until 16 sts remain.
  22. Cut yarn, leaving a 10-in. tail. With tapestry needle, run yarn through remaining sts and leave open to stuff later. This is the back of the head.

BODY/SWEATER: With ivory, cast on 8 sts each on three dp needles: 24 sts for neck.

  1. Round 1: K around: 24 sts.
  2. Round 2: Attach dark green and k around: 24 sts.
  3. Round 3: K and inc in first st, k next st; * k and inc in next st, k next st; rep from * around: 36 sts.
  4. Round 4: K around.
  5. Round 5: Rep Round 3: 54 sts.
  6. Rounds 6-7: K around: 54 sts.
  7. Round 8: To make armholes, k 17, bind off 10, k 17, bind off 10: 34 sts.
  8. Round 9: K 17, cast on 10 sts above bound-off sts, k 17, cast on 10 sts above bound-off sts: 54 sts.
  9. Rounds 10-23: K around for 14 rounds: 54 sts.
  10. Rounds 24-26: Attach maroon and k around: 54 sts.
  11. Rounds 27-28: Attach dark green and k around: 54 sts.
  12. Rounds 29-31: Attach maroon and k around: 54 sts.
  13. Rounds 32-36: Attach dark green and k around: 54 sts.
  14. Rounds 37-40: Attach ivory and k around: 54 sts.
  15. Round 41: For legs, lay body flat with armholes matching. Locate and mark center front and back sts, dividing the 54 sts equally (27 sts for each leg).
  16. To make legs, k 27 sts (to marked center st) and put these sts on holder, k remaining 27 sts around: 27 sts.
  17. Rounds 42-65: K around in a tube for 24 rounds.  Bind off loosely.
  18. Pick up 27 sts of other leg and rep Rounds 42-65.

ARMS: At one armhole opening, pick up and k 8 sts each on three dp needles (10 bound-off sts, 10 cast-on sts and 2 sts from each side): 24 sts.

  1. Rounds 1-13: Attach dark green and k around: 24 sts.
  2. Rounds 14-15: Attach maroon and k around: 24 sts.
  3. Rounds 16-17: Attach dark green and k around: 24 sts.
  4. Rounds 18-19: Attach maroon and k around: 24 sts.
  5. Rounds 20-21: Attach dark green and k around: 24 sts.
  6. Rounds 22-24: Attach ivory and k around: 24 sts.  Bind off loosely.
  7. Repeat for other arm.

PAWS (make two): With ivory and straight needles, cast on 4 sts.

  1. Row 1: K across row.
  2. Row 2: Inc 1 st at beg and end of row, k across row.
  3. Rows 3-6: Alternate Rows 1 and 2 until you have 10 sts.
  4. Rows 7-8: K across row.
  5. Row 9: Dec 1 st at beg and end of row, k across row.
  6. Row 10: K across row.
  7. Rows 11-13: Rep Rows 9 and 10 until 4 sts remain. Bind off.

FEET (make two): With ivory and straight needles, cast on 4 sts.

  1. Row 1: K across row.
  2. Row 2: Inc 1 st at beg and end of row, k across row.
  3. Rows 3-8: Rep Rows 1 and 2 until you have 12 sts.
  4. Rows 9-10: K across row: 12 sts.
  5. Row 11: Dec 1 st at beg and end of row, k across row: 10 sts.
  6. Row 12: K across row.
  7. Rows 13-17: Rep Rows 10 and 11 until 4 sts remain. Bind off.

EARS (make two): With ivory and straight needles, cast on 14 sts.

  1. Rows 1-2: K across row.
  2. Row 3: Dec 1 st and k to end.
  3. Repeat Row 3 until 5 sts remain. Bind off.
  4. Using tapestry needle, sew yarn through top of ear, pulling yarn slightly to curve ear forward.

SCARF: With maroon and straight needles, cast on 6 sts.

  1. Row 1: K across row.
  2. Row 2: P across row.
  3. Repeat Rows 1 and 2 for 31 in. Bind off.

FINISHING:

  • Stuff and shape head. Pull yarn at back of head to close opening and use tapestry needle and tail of yarn to stitch opening closed. With the nose centered in front, rest  head in the neck opening of  sweater. Using matching yarn, stitch the neck opening to the head. To make head sturdy and upright, hold a large handful of stuffing under head. Using matching yarn, stitch through stuffing and neck of sweater.
  • Stuff body, arms and legs firmly. Using matching yarn, sew feet to leg openings and paws to arm openings, adding extra stuffing to round them before closing.
  • Sew ears to bear’s head as shown in photo.
  • Trace patterns above right onto tracing paper. Cut felt eyes and nose as directed on patterns. Using black thread, hand-stitch eyes to bear’s head as shown in photo. Stitch nose to head, covering opening. Using tapestry needle and black yarn, hand-stitch mouth as shown.
  • Tie scarf around bear’s neck.

FINISHED SIZE: Teddy bear is approximately 22 inches long.
