GAUGE: When working in Basic Afghan St with H hk, 9 sts and 7 rows = 2 inches.

Special Stitches: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • BASIC AFGHAN STITCH: Rows of Afghan knit stitch
  • Foundation Row 1 (RS): First half: Sk first ch, * insert hk in next ch, draw up a lp, repeat from * across row, keeping all lps on hk. Number of lps will equal number of beg ch sts.
  • Second half: Yo, draw through lp, * yo, draw through 2 lps, repeat from * across row.
  • Row 2: First half: Ch 1, * insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp, repeat from * across row.  (Don’t miss the last bar at the end of the row.)
  • Second half: Repeat Row 1, Second half.
  • Repeat Row 2 for pattern.
  • AFGHAN BOBBLE STITCH (Bobble): Work Basic Afghan St in next vertical st, then (yo, Afghan k st) three times in same vertical st, yo and carefully draw through first 7 lps on hk. As you work second half of row, work bobble st lp as for other lps.
  • AFGHAN KNIT STITCH (Afghan k st): Holding yarn to back, insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp.
  • AFGHAN PURL STITCH (Afghan p st): Holding yarn to front, insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp.
  • AFGHAN SEED STITCH: Foundation Row 1: First half: Work same as Foundation Row 1, First half of Basic Afghan St.
  • Second half: Yo, draw through lp, * yo, draw through 2 lps, repeat from * across row.
  • Row 2: First half: Ch 1, Afghan k st in second vertical st, * Afghan p st in next vertical st, Afghan k st in next vertical st, repeat from * across row, ending with Afghan p st.
  • Second half: Repeat Row 1, Second half.
  • Row 3: First half: Ch 1, Afghan p st in second vertical st, * Afghan k st in next vertical st, Afghan p st in next vertical st, repeat from * across row, ending with Afghan k st.
  • Second half: Repeat Row 1, Second half.
  • Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pattern, working a knit st above each purl st and a purl st above each knit st.
  • CHANGING COLORS: Read charts from right to left on all rows. Two halves of each row must be completed in the same color(s) to create one row on chart.
  • Repeat the first half of Row 2, picking up the number of lps of first color shown on chart, join next color, pick up specified number of lps in this color, etc. Don’t carry yarn across back, join a separate ball of a color instead.
  • Repeat second half of Row 2, working off lps with matching color until one stitch is left of the color, then change colors, picking up yarn from underneath color previously used to twist yarns. Draw new color through one lp of previous color and one lp of new color.
  • When a color is no longer needed, break off, leaving a long end to weave in.

DIRECTIONS:

LEAVES (Make 36): With D hk and green sport-weight, ch 11.

  • Round 1: Sc in second ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in next 6 ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch; working on opposite side of foundation ch, hdc in next st, dc in next 6 st, hdc in next st, sc in next st; sl st in skipped st. Fasten off, leaving an 8-inch yarn end to sew leaf to afghan.

FLOWERS (Make 18): With D hk and pale rose sport-weight, make sl knot on hk.

  1. Round 1: In sl knot, work ch 3, 9 dc, join with sl st in third ch of beg ch-3, pull up sl knot tightly, weaving in beg end to fasten off.
  2. Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each dc around, join with sl st in beg sc: 10 sc.
  3. Round 3: (Ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next sc) four times, ch 3, sl st in base of beg ch-3.
  4. Round 4: * Ch 2, 5 dc in first ch-5 sp, ch 2, sl st in next sc, repeat from * around for first five petals, ending with sl st in base of beg ch-2.
  5. Round 5: Working behind petals made in previous round, ch 1, sc in next sc of Round 2 (under center of Round 4 petal), [ch 5, sc in next sc of Round 2 (under center of Round 4 petal)] four times, ch 5, sl st in top of beg sc.
  6. Round 6: * Ch 2, 8 dc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, sl st in next sc, repeat from * around, ending with sl st in base of beg ch-2.
  7. Round 7: Working behind petals made in previous rounds, ch 1, * sc over next ch-5 of Round 5 between fourth and fifth dc of Round 6, ch 7, repeat from * four more times, sl st in top of beg sc.
  8. Round 8: * Ch 2, 11 dc in next ch-7 sp, ch 2, sl st in next sc, repeat from * around for last five petals, ending with sl st in base of beg ch-2. Fasten off, leaving a 20-inch-long yarn end to sew flower to afghan.

FLOWER SQUARE (FS—Make 18): Work each square from Flower Square Chart on pullout page 35, following chart for stitch changes by reading rows right to left. The first four rows are written out. With H afghan hk and white worsted-weight, ch 29.

  1. FS Rows 1-2: Work Rows 1-2 of Afghan Seed St.
  2. FS Row 3: Continue in Afghan Seed St across first 13 sts (14 lps on hk), afghan bobble st in next vertical st, continue in Afghan Seed St to end of row, beginning with an Afghan p st in next vertical st.
  3. FS Row 4: Work Afghan Seed St across first 12 sts; work Afghan k st across next 3 sts; continue in Afghan Seed St to end of row.
  4. FS Rows 5-23: Continue to follow Flower Square Chart.
  5. FS Bind off Row: * Work Afghan k st as directed, but pull lp through one on hk; work Afghan p st, pulling lp through one on hk, repeat from * across row. One lp remains on hk. Do not fasten off.
  6. FS Edging Round 1: Continuing with white and size H crochet hk, evenly work 27 sc on each side of Flower Square, working 3 sc in each corner st, sl st in top of beg sc.
  7. FS Edging Round 2: (Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in corner st, sk next 2 sc, * sc in next st, sk next 2 sc, and work (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) shell in next sc, sk next 2 sc, repeat from * around square, working (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in each remaining corner st until 3 sts remain, sc in next st, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off. Weave in yarn ends.
  8. FS Finishing: Use yarn ends to hand-sew a flower and two leaves in the center of each Flower Square, referring to photo above left for placement.

HEART SQUARE (HS—Make 17): Work each square from Heart Square Chart, following chart for changes by reading rows right to left. The first four rows are written out.

  1. With H afghan hk and white worsted-weight, ch 29.
  2. HS Rows 1-2: Work in Basic Afghan St.
  3. HS Row 3: Work Basic Afghan St across first 13 sts (14 lps on hk), attach burgundy and work 1 Afghan p st with burgundy, then continue in white Basic Afghan St across row.
  4. HS Row 4: Work Basic Afghan St across first 12 sts; with burgundy, work Afghan p st, Afghan k st, Afghan p st; complete row in white Basic Afghan St.
  5. HS Rows 5-23: Continue to follow Heart Square Chart.
  6. HS Bind off Row: * Insert hk right to left under next vertical st, draw up a lp and immediately pull this lp through one on hk; repeat from * across row. One lp remains on hk. Do not fasten off.
  7. HS Edging Round 1: Repeat FS Edging Round 1.
  8. Join Flower and Heart Squares (right side up) in HS Edging Round 2, forming seven rows of five squares each (see Fig. 1).
  9. HS Edging Round 2: Repeat FS Edging Round 2, joining adjacent Heart Squares to Flower Squares as follows: For each shell work (3 dc, ch 1, drop lp from hk, insert hk in ch-1 of corresponding shell of adjacent Flower Square and pull dropped lp through, 3 dc). Join corners by repeating as directed here for joining shells before or after ch-3 of corner. Weave in yarn ends.

OUTER EDGING: With H crochet hk and white worsted-weight, loosely ch 761, join with a sl st in first ch to form ring.

  1. Round 1: On right side of afghan, [ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, join to ch-1 of any shell of any square on outside edge of afghan (except joined or corner shells) as directed in HS Edging Round 2, 3 dc] in next ch, sk next 2 ch, * sc in next ch, sk next 2 sc, and work (3 dc, ch 1, join to next shell on outside edge of afghan, 3 dc) shell in next ch, sk next 2 ch, repeat from * along edge; between joined shells, work shell as follows: (3 dc, join to corner ch-3 of first square, ch 1, join to corner ch-3 of adjacent square, 3 dc) in next ch; for outer corners, work 2 shells as follows: [(3 dc, join to corner ch-3 of corner square, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next 3 ch, sc in next ch, sk next 2 ch, (3 dc, join to ch-1 of shell just completed, ch 1, join to corner ch-3 of corner square, 3 dc) in next ch]; end with sc in next ch, join with sl st in top of beg ch-3.
  2. Round 2: Continuing on right side of afghan, turn to sc over ch (from opposite side of ch) as follows: Ch 1, 3 sc over each 2 sk ch sts, 1 sc at base of each shell, 5 sc over corner 3 sl sts, join with sl st in top of beg sc.

PUFF STITCH INSERT: Worked in spaces over joinings between edgings.

  • **Working with variegated or ombre yarn and size H crochet hk, join yarn at the point on the bottom edge of the afghan where two squares join, sl st over join, * pull up long lp to length of space between shells (about 1-1/4 inches), (yo, draw up long lp) two times, yo, draw through all lps on hk, ch 1 and sl st over join of next two shells, repeat from * to top of afghan, working a sl st over each of the joinings at the corners of the squares. Repeat from ** for each vertical, then each horizontal row of afghan and between squares and outer edging, fastening off at each outer edge or corner. Weave in all yarn ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is about 48 x 70 inches. Each square is about 7 inches across before edging.
