Instructions

GAUGE: When working in Mesh Pattern with I hk, 5 sts and 4 rows = 1 inch. When working in sc with G hk, 7 sts and 5 rows = 1 inch.

SPECIAL STITCHES: Refer to crocheting/ knitting abbreviations below.

  • Mesh Pattern Row: Ch 1, turn, sc in first sc, (ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc) repeat across.
  • Decrease (dec 1): Draw up a lp in first sc, sk next ch-1 sp, draw up a lp in second sc, draw yarn through all 3 lps on hk.
  • Changing colors: Colors are changed while completing last st of first color. Join second color as follows: Work the last st of first color as a normal sc until two lps remain on the hk, yo with second color and draw second color through; drop first color and leave it at back of work or fasten off.

DIRECTIONS:

BODY FRONT: With I hk and medium red-brown, ch 98.

  1. Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk, (ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch) repeat across: 49 sc.
  2. Row 2: Work Mesh Pattern Row across. Mark this side as right side.
  3. Rows 3-4: Work Mesh Pattern Row across.
  4. Row 5: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with off-white.
  5. Row 6: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with medium red-brown.
  6. Row 7: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with dark brown.
  7. Rows 8-12: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with medium red-brown.
  8. Row 13: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with dark brown.
  9. Row 14: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with medium red-brown.
  10. Row 15: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with off-white.
  11. Rows 16-20: Repeat Rows 8-12.
  12. Rows 21-68: Repeat Rows 5-20 three more times.
  13. Row 69: Work Mesh Pattern Row across with off-white. Fasten off.

Armhole Shaping: LEFT FRONT (LF):

  1. LF Row 1 (RS): With right side facing, sk first 8 sts (each ch-1 sp also counts as 1 st); join medium red-brown with sl st in next sc; sc in same sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc), repeat from * 19 more times: 20 sc.
  2. LF Row 2: With dark brown, dec 1, work Mesh Pattern Row to last ch-1 sp and sc, sk last 2 sts: 18 sc.
  3. LF Rows 3-5: With medium red-brown, ch 1, sc in first sc, work Mesh Pattern Row across.
  4. LF Row 6: Dec 1, work Mesh Pattern Row across: 17 sc.
  5. LF Rows 7-34: Repeat LF Rows 3-6 seven times, continuing in color pattern est in Body Front Rows 5-20, dec 1 st at neck edge every fourth row (mark dec sts with a scrap of yarn to make counting easier): 10 sc at end of Row 34.
  6. LF Rows 35-39: Work in est pattern without dec.
  7. LF Shoulder Shaping Row 40: Without changing color, ch 1, sc in first sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, repeat from * 5 more times: 6 sc. Fasten off.

RIGHT FRONT (RF):

  1. RF Row 1 (RS): With right side facing, sk 3 sts at center front, repeat LF Row 1 to last 8 sts, sk last 8 sts.
  2. RF Rows 2-5: Repeat LF Rows 2-5.
  3. RF Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, repeat from * 16 more times, end with dec 1.
  4. RF Rows 7-34: Repeat (LF Rows 3-5 and RF Row 6) seven times, continuing in color pattern est in Body Front Rows 5-20, dec 1 st at neck edge every fourth row: 10 sc at end of Row 34.
  5. RF Rows 35-39: Work in est pattern without dec.
  6. RF Shoulder Shaping Row 40: Without changing color, sl st in first 8 sts (each ch-1 sp also counts as 1 st), ch 1, sc in first sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, repeat from * 5 more times: 6 sc. Fasten off.

BACK (B): B Rows 1-69: Repeat Body Front Rows 1-69.

  1. Back Armhole Shaping (BA): BA Row 1 (RS): With right side facing, sk first 8 sts (each ch-1 sp also counts as 1 st); join medium red-brown with sl st in next sc; sc in same sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, repeat from * to last 8 sts, sk last 8 sts: 41 sc.
  2. BA Row 2: With dark brown, dec 1, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc, repeat from * 38 more times, sk last ch-1 sp and sc and changing to medium red-brown in last st: 39 sc.
  3. Continuing in color pattern est in Body Front Rows 5-20, work even until back armholes are same length as front armholes.
  4. Back Shoulder Shaping Row: Sl st in first 8 sts, sc in same sc, * ch 1, sk ch-1 sp, sc in next sc), repeat from * to last 8 sts, sk last 8 sts. Fasten off.

CHAIN ST OVERLAY:

  1. With right side facing and medium red-brown yarn, sl st in first ch-1 sp in lower right hand corner of back or front. While holding yarn behind piece, insert hk in next ch-1 sp directly above it, yo hk and draw through the ch-1 sp and the lp on the hk; continue in this manner to top of piece; fasten off.
  2. Working chain st overlay in next ch-1 sp as directed for medium red-brown, continue by following this color order across each piece: off-white, dark brown, medium red-brown, medium red-brown, dark brown, off-white, medium red-brown, medium red-brown.
  3. Weave in all yarn ends.

JOINING: Use yarn needle and medium red- brown to stitch front to back at side and shoulder edges.

ARMBAND: Foundation Round: With right side facing and size G hk, join dark brown at underarm seam; ch 1, work 90 sc, evenly spaced around armhole edge, sl st in top of beg sc; ch 7.

  1. Rib St Row 1: Sc in second ch from hk and each rem ch, sl st in each of next two sc on Foundation Round.
  2. Rib St Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sk first 2 sl st, sc in back lp only (Back Loop) of each of next 5 sc, sc in both lps of last sc.
  3. Rib St Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in both lps of first sc, sc in back lps only of next 5 sc, sl st in next 2 sc on Foundation Round.
  4. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 around armhole of vest, ending with Row 2. At end of last row, leave a 10-inch tail for sewing. Join ends of armband.

WAISTBAND: Foundation Round: With right side facing and size G hk, join dark brown at underarm seam; ch 1, work 194 sc, evenly spaced around armhole edge, sl st in top of beg sc; ch 13.

Repeat Armband Rib St Rows, working over 12 sc for ribbing. Join ends of waistband.

NECKBAND: Foundation Round: With right side facing and size G hk, join dark brown at center back; ch 1, work 114 sc, evenly spaced around neck edge, sl st in top of
beg sc; ch 7.

Repeat Armband Rib St Rows with the following changes: Sl st in 3 sc (instead of 2) three times across seams of each shoulder; beginning about 1-1/2 inches from center front, sl st in 4 sc (instead of 2) seven times. Adjust as necessary to make the neckband lie flat. Join ends of neckband.§

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are given for a size Medium vest with an actual chest measurement of 41 inches.
