Instructions

GAUGE: When working in St st on size 8 needles, 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Patterns/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

  • K 1, p 1 rib: Row 1: * K 1, p 1; rep from * across row.
  • Row 2 and all other rows: K the k sts and p the p sts.
  • St st: Row 1 and all RS rows: Knit.
  • Row 2 and all WS rows: Purl.
  • SSK: Slip 2 sts knitwise, one at a time, onto right needle; insert left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them together.
  • C4B (Cable 4 Back): Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back of work; k next 2 sts from left needle, then k sts from cable needle.
  • C4F (Cable 4 Front): Slip next 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at front of work; k next 2 sts from left needle, then k sts from cable needle.

PATTERN:

  • P-Row 1 (RS): Knit.
  • P-Row 2: Purl.
  • P-Row 3: K 1; * C4B, k 4, C4F; rep from * until 1 st remains; k 1.
  • P-Row 4: Purl.
  • P-Row 5: Knit.
  • P-Row 6: Purl.
  • P-Row 7: K 3, C4F, C4B; * k 4, C4F, C4B; rep from * until 3 sts remain; k 3.
  • P-Row 8: Purl.
  • Repeat P-Rows 1-8 for pattern.

Directions:

  1. BACK: With size 6 needles, cast on 79 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch.
  2. Change to size 8 needles and work in St st until piece measures 11 inches from beg. End with a WS row.
  3. B-Armhole shaping: Bind off 4 sts at the beg of next two rows.
  4. B-Next RS row: K 1, SSK; k across until 3 sts remain; k 2 tog, k 1.
  5. B-Next WS row: Purl.
  6. Rep last two rows until 63 sts remain. Work in St st until armhole measures 7 inches from first row of bound-off sts. End with a WS row.
  7. B-Neck shaping: K 21; place center 21 sts onto a st holder for neck; with a second skein of yarn, k 21 sts.
  8. Shoulders: S-Row 1: Working both shoulders at the same time from separate skeins of yarn, p 21; bind off 2 sts of second shoulder, p to end.
  9. S-Row 2: K 19; bind off 2 sts, k to end.
  10. S-Row 3: P 19; bind off 2 sts, p to end.
  11. S-Row 4: K 17; bind off 2 sts, k to end.
  12. Work in St st until back measures 19 inches from beg. Bind off each shoulder.
  13. FRONT: With size 6 needles, cast on 98 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch.
  14. Change to size 8 needles and begin with first row of pattern. Continue in pattern until piece measures 11 inches from beg. End with a WS row.
  15. F-Armhole shaping: Bind off 5 sts at the beg of next two rows. (After each dec, make adjustments at beg and end of rows to maintain the established pattern.)
  16. F-Next RS row: K 1, SSK; work in established pattern across until 3 sts remain; k 2 tog, k 1.
  17. F-Next WS row: Purl.
  18. Rep last two rows until 80 sts remain. Work in established pattern until armhole measures 4-1/2 inches from first row of bound-off sts. End with a WS row.
  19. F-Neck shaping: Work first 32 sts in pattern; place center 16 sts onto a st holder for neck; with a second skein of yarn, work last 32 sts in pattern.
  20. Front shoulders: FS-Row 1: Working both shoulders at the same time from separate skeins of yarn, p 32; bind off 2 sts of second shoulder, p to end.
  21. FS-Row 2: Work 30 sts in pattern; bind off 2 sts, work in pattern to the end.
  22. FS-Row 3: P 30; bind off 2 sts, p to end.
  23. FS-Row 4: Work 28 sts in pattern; bind off 2 sts, work in pattern to the end.
  24. FS-Row 5: Purl.
  25. FS-Row 6: Work in pattern, decreasing 1 st on each side of neck edge.
  26. Rep FS-Rows 5 and 6 until 24 sts remain on each side of shoulder.
  27. Work in the pattern until the front measures 19 inches from beg. Bind off each shoulder.
  28. SLEEVE (make 2): With size 6 needles, cast on 55 sts. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch.
  29. Change to size 8 needles and work in St st until piece measures 2-1/4 inches from beg. End with a WS row.
  30. SL-Armhole shaping: Bind off 4 sts at the beg of next two rows.
  31. SL-Next RS row: K 1, SSK; k across until 3 sts remain; k 2 tog, k 1.
  32. SL-Next WS row: Purl.
  33. Rep last two rows until 15 sts remain. Bind off remaining 15 sts.
  34. Neck: With tapestry needle and matching yarn, sew front/back shoulder seams together, easing the front shoulders to fit the back shoulders.
  35. With RS facing and circular needle, evenly pick up 88 sts around neck, including the 21 sts on back holder and 16 sts on front holder. Work in k 1, p 1 rib for 1 inch. Bind off in rib.
  36. Finishing: Set in the sleeves. Sew underarm and side seams. Weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for pre-teen size small/medium. Actual chest size is 35 inches.
