Instructions

GUAGE: Each complete square measures about 3 inches square. Slight variation in gauge will change finished size a bit.

DIRECTIONS:

Front: Two-color square (make 16): With tan, ch 5, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

  1. Round 1: Ch 3 for first dc, work 2 dcs in ring, ch 3, work 3 dcs in ring, ch 3, drop tan and pick up black, [work 3 dcs in ring, ch 3] twice, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn: four 3 dc sets and four ch-3s.
  2. Round 2: Sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 3 for first dc, dc in same ch-sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs of previous round,   (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp,  work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, drop black, pick up tan, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs of previous round, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn: 28 dcs and four ch-3 corners.
  3. Round 3: Sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 3 for first dc, dc in same ch-sp work 1 dc in each of the next 7 dcs of previous round,   (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 7 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs, in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, drop tan, pick up black,  work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 7 dcs of previous round, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 7 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3, turn 44 dcs and four ch-3 corners.
  4. Round 4: Sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 3 for first dc, dc in same ch-sp work 1 dc in each of the next 11 dcs of previous round, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 11 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs, in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, drop black, pick up tan, work 2 dcs in same ch-sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 11 dcs of previous round, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next ch-3 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 11 dcs of previous round, work 2 dcs in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off: 60 dcs and four ch-3 corners.

Joining Squares:

  • Referring to photo, lay out completed squares right side up as shown. Sew squares together, securing corners with tan and then with black.

Front Border:

  • Round 1: Starting at the lower right front edge and using black, * ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc same ch-sp, dc around, working 2 dcs tog along center of each square to next corner, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next corner, dc around, working 2 dcs along center of each tan square to next corner, work 2 dcs, ch 3 in next corner, change to tan; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3 top.
  • Round 2: Working in matching colors, dc in each dc and (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in each ch-3 of previous round. Fasten off.

Back:

  • Row 1: With tan, ch 65, dc in fourth ch from hk and in each remaining ch across: 63 dcs.
  • Rows 2-35: Turn, ch 3, dc in each dc across: 63 dcs.
  • Sc one row along ends of rows, decreasing 5 sts evenly along edge. Repeat on other side.

Back Border:

  • Round 1: Starting at one corner with tan, ch 3, for first dc, work 1 dc in same sp, * work 1 dc in each st across, (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in next corner, work 1 dc in each st across, work 2 dcs in next corner, ch 3, change to black, work 2 dcs in corner, repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top of beginning ch-3.
  • Round 2: Working in matching colors, dc in each dc and (work 2 dcs, ch 3, 2 dcs) in each ch-3 of previous round. Fasten off.

Finishing:

  • Place front and back of pillow together with wrong sides facing and colored edges matching. With front of pillow facing you, join black to bottom right edge, sc through both front and back of pillow. Work along first side edge, work 4 scs in first corner, sc across top to next corner, work 2 scs in corner, with tan, work 2 scs in corner, sc along other side of pillow, work 4 scs in corner, then working along bottom front of pillow only, sc to next corner, work 2 scs in corner, join with a sl st in first st of round. Fasten off.
  • Sc along remaining edge of back of pillow. Fasten off.

Inside Flap:

  • Row 1: With tan, join yarn to open edge of pillow top, dc across.
  • Row 2-6: Turn, ch 3, dc in each st across.
  • Row 7: Turn ch 1, sc in each st across. Fasten off.
  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Sew one side of snaps sets to inside flap and remaining sides to opposite side of inside back of pillow.
  • Insert pillow form and snap closed.

FINISHED SIZE: Pillow measures 14 inches x 14 inches.
