Instructions

GAUGE: Using size 9 needles and St st, 7 sts and 10 rows = 2 inches.

STITCHES USED:

STOCKINETTE STITCH: St st

  • Row 1 and all odd rows: K across row.
  • Row 2 and all even rows: P across row.
  • Repeat Rows 1 and 2.

KNIT 1, PURL 1 RIBBING: K1, p1 rib

  • Row 1: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * across row.
  • Row 2: * P 1, k 1; repeat from * across row.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, download the Kid’s Knit Sweater Charts.

  1. With smaller needles and MC, cast on 101(113,119) sts.
  2. Ribbing: Row 1: K 5 for front band, work in k 1, p 1 rib across row to last 5 sts, k 5 for front band.
  3. Row 2: K 5 for front band, work in p 1, k 1 rib across row to last 5 sts, k 5 for front band.
  4. Repeat Rows 1-2 until ribbing measures 2 in., ending with Row 2.
  5. For next row, k 5, work in k 1, p 1 rib, inc 12 sts evenly spaced across row to last 5 sts, k 5: 113(125,131) sts.

BODY:

  1. With larger needles, k 5 in MC for front band, join CC and work Row 1 of Pattern One in St st as shown on chart, starting at A, repeating pattern from A to B across row and ending at C, k 5 in MC for other side of front band. It will be necessary to join another strand of MC to work the front bands unless you carry the MC across the CC rows to work the front bands.
  2. Continue working Rows 1-10 of Pattern One until piece measures approximately 11-1/2(13-1/2,14-1/2) in., ending with Row 10 of pattern. Front bands continue to be knit every row.
  3. Break off MC used in Pattern One and work in CC for three rows, keeping front band in MC as before and ending on WS.
  4. Armhole: Work across the first 25
  5. (29,30) sts, bind off next 10 sts for bottom of armhole, work across next 43(47,51) sts, bind off next 10 sts for bottom of armhole, work across remaining 25(29,30) sts. Place sts on holder to be worked later for yoke.

SLEEVE (make two):

  1. Using smaller needles and MC, cast on 30(32,32) sts and work in rib until piece measures 2 in., ending with Row 2.
  2. For next row, inc 7(5,5) sts evenly spaced across row: 37(37,37) sts.
  3. With larger needles, join CC and work Row 1 of Pattern One in St st as shown on chart, starting at A, repeating pattern from A to B across row and ending at C.
  4. Repeat Rows 1-10 of Pattern One in St st, inc 2 sts each side of piece every fourth row 10(11,12) times. (Increased stitches are worked into a continuation of Pattern One.)
  5. Work even on these 57(59,61) sts until piece measures approximately 12(13,14) in. or desired length to armhole, ending on Row 10 of Pattern One.
  6. Break off MC used in Pattern One and work in CC for three rows, keeping front band in MC as before and ending on WS.
  7. At the start of next two rows, bind off 5 sts for underarm. Place 47(49,51) sts on holder to be worked later for the yoke.
  8. Repeat for second sleeve.

YOKE:

  1. Assemble sweater pieces on larger needles RS out as follows: Slide the 25(29,30) sts of right front onto needle, place marker, add the 47(49,51) sts of right sleeve, place marker, add the 43(47,51) back sts, place marker, add the 47(49,51) sts of left sleeve, place marker, add the 25(29-30) sts of left front: 187(203,213) sts.
  2. Row 1: RS, for Large size only, k 5 in MC, k across row in CC to second marker, slip marker, k 2 tog, continue across row to 2 sts before third marker, k 2 tog and k across row in CC to last 5 sts, k 5 in MC.
  3. For sizes Small and Medium, k 5 in MC, work across row in CC, slipping markers but not decreasing to last 5 sts, k 5 in MC: 187(203,211) sts.
  4. Row 2: K 5 in MC, p across row in CC, slipping markers to last 5 sts, k 5 in MC.
  5. Row 3: K 5 in MC, work Row 1 of Pattern Two in St st, starting at A, repeating pattern from A to B across row and ending at C, k last 5 sts in MC. At same time, make yoke decreases by knitting 2 sts tog before and after each of the four markers: 179(195,203) sts.
  6. Row 4: Work Row 2 of Pattern Two in St st, starting at C and repeating pattern from B to A across row, ending at A.
  7. Work Rows 3-4 of Pattern Two as before. Continue repeating the four rows of Pattern Two until four repeats have been completed, making decreases by knitting 2 sts tog before and after each of the four markers every k row, maintaining pattern as best you can with the decreases.
  8. Work two rows of MC in St st, making decreases and working front bands as before.
  9. Work Rows 3-4 and then Rows 1-2 of Pattern Two in St st, making decreases and working front bands as before. Fasten off MC for front bands.
  10. Continue working Pattern Two, making decreases without working front bands, until 99(107,107) sts remain, ending on WS.

NECK:

  1. K 5 and place sts on holder. Continue across row in pattern, working decreases as before to last 5 sts, k 5 and place last 5 sts on holder.
  2. Continue with pattern and decrease each k row as before, and at the same time, decrease 1 st at neck edge each side every other row three times until 35(43,43) sts remain: 0(3,3) right front sts, 13 right sleeve sts, 9(11,11) back sts, 13 left sleeve sts, 0(3,3) left front sts. End on WS and fasten off CC.

NECK RIBBING:

  1. Using MC and smaller needles, with RS facing, pick up and k across 5 right front band sts, pick up 14 sts from right band to sleeve, k across 35(43,43) body sts from needle, pick up 14 sts from left sleeve to left front band, k across 5 left band sts: 73(81,81) sts.
  2. K every row of 5 sts of the left and the right front bands and work rest of the sts in k 1, p 1 rib until the ribbing measures 1-1/2 in., ending on WS. Bind off from RS in rib.

FINISHING:

  1. With right sides together, sew underarms of sleeves. Pull all of the yarn ends to WS and weave in the loose ends.
  2. Mark location for six buttonholes evenly spaced on right band for a girl’s sweater and on left band for a boy’s sweater. Spread a space large enough for each button and stitch ends with red thread to secure opening.
  3. Using red thread, sew buttons on other band to correspond with buttonholes.
  4. Give to your favorite youngster!

FINISHED SIZE: Directions are for a Child size Small (4-6) with a chest measurement of about 29 inches and a length measurement of about 20 inches. Changes for sizes Medium (8-10) and Large (12-14) are in parentheses.
