Instructions

GAUGE: One solid-color or two-color block = 2 inches x 2 inches. Slight variations in gauge will change the finished size a bit.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to the knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

The afghan is made up of solid-color and two-color crocheted blocks. The blocks are joined as they are worked. Work the solid-color and two-color blocks in the colors and rows as shown on the chart.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, download the Tulip Chart.

SOLID-COLOR BLOCK: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 1, * work 3 scs in ring, ch 2; rep from * three times, join with a sl st in first sc: count 12 scs and 4 ch-2 sps.
  2. Rnd 2: Ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dcs, * (dc, ch 2, dc) in corner ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs; rep from * around, (dc, ch 2, dc) in last ch-2 sp, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 20 dcs and 4 ch-2 sps. Fasten off.
  3. Joining Rnd: All subsequent blocks are joined in Rnd 2 at the corners where the blocks meet as shown on the chart. Ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dcs, * dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, hold wrong side of completed block to wrong side of working block with corners matching, ch 1 in corresponding corner of completed block, dc in same ch-2 sp of working block, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 dcs of working block; rep from * as needed to join corners, (dc, ch 2, dc) in last ch-2 sp, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.

TWO-COLOR BLOCK: With first color of yarn, ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring.

  1. Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 3 scs in ring, ch 2, work 3 scs in ring, ch 1; join second color of yarn (carry first color of yarn in back and work new sts over carried yarn), ch 1, work 3 scs in ring, ch 2, work 3 scs in ring, ch 1, join with a sl st in beg ch-1: count 12 scs and 4 ch-2 sps.
  2. Rnd: 2: Working with first color of yarn and continuing to carry second color of yarn as in Rnd 1, ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; with second color of yarn, ch 1, continuing to carry first color of yarn as before, dc in same ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch-2 sp, work 1 dc in each of next 3 sts, dc in next ch-2 st, ch 1; with first color of yarn, ch 1, dc in same ch-2 sp, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3: count 20 dcs and 4 ch-2 sps. Fasten off both colors of yarn.
  3. Joining Rnd: Join all subsequent two-color blocks as in Solid-Color Block Rnd 2 at the corners where the blocks meet as shown on the chart, continuing two-color block pattern as established.
  4. FINISHING: Rnd 1: With sl knot on hk, join Light Mint yarn in any st on edge of afghan, work 1 sc in each dc and in ch-2 sp between blocks around, working (2 scs, ch 2, 2 scs) in each corner, join with a sl st in beg sc, ch 3, turn.
  5. Rnd 2: Work 1 dc in each sc around, working (2 dcs, ch 2, 2 dcs) in ch-2 sp of each corner, join with a sl st in top of beg ch-3. Fasten off.
  6. Use needle to weave in loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan measures about 52 inches wide x 64 inches long.
