Instructions

  1. (Optional) If choosing an unfinished wood frame, base coat in paint color of choice. Add coats of paint as needed for complete coverage, letting paint dry after each application. Otherwise, choose a prepainted solid-colored frame.
  2. Apply strips of duct tape vertically on the right and left sides of frame. Once positioned as desired, press tape firmly into place. Allow overlapping onto back of frame about 1 in. Trim ends.
  3. On top of duct tape strips, apply two patterned paper tapes on each side of the frame. Place tape strips side-by-side and slightly off-center toward the frame opening. Once positioned as desired, press tape firmly into place. Allow overlapping onto back of frame about 1 in. Trim ends.
  4. Put photo in Duct Tape Craft Frame opening and display.

EDITOR’S NOTE:

Types of decorative tape include:

Duct tape. Once available only in gray for household repair, duct tape now boasts bright, fun colors and patterns that, combined with super-stickiness and resistance to wear, make it perfect for decorating.

Paper tape. Originally from Japan, where it’s known as washi, it feels like masking tape and is slightly translucent. The variety of sizes, colors and patterns means you can mix and match for eclectic original designs.

Fabric tape. Made from cut strips of fabric with adhesive backing, it resembles washi but is opaque and feels like cloth. Fabric means edges can fray, so handle carefully.

Tape tips

  • Clean the surface of the object you’re taping and let dry thoroughly. Wear gloves or wash your hands before working with tape, which quickly picks up dirt.
  • Cut tape with very sharp scissors or an X-acto knife for a finished look.
  • Measure sections carefully with a ruler when taping striped or checkered patterns.
  • Test placement by sticking tape lightly until you’re happy with positioning. Most tape strips can be adjusted until firmly pressed into place.
  • Protect your work, if desired, by making it water-resistant with clear acrylic sealer brushed or sprayed over the surface, following manufacturer’s instructions.
