Instructions

GAUGE: 8 scs and 8 rows = 2 inches.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

Directions: HEAD (make 2):

  1. H-Row 1 (RS): With white, ch 9; sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch: count 8 scs.
  2. H-Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, sc across until 1 st remains, work 2 scs in last st: count 10,12,14 scs.
  3. H-Rows 5-10: Ch 1, turn; sc across: count 14 scs.
  4. H-Rows 11-13: Ch 1, turn; sc first 2 sts tog, sc across until 2 sts remain, sc 2 tog: count 12,10,8 scs. Fasten off after H-Row 13.
  5. With wrong sides together and rows matching, lay one head piece on top of the other. With a white sl knot on hk, insert hk through both layers in one end of H-Row 1 and make 1 sc. Insert hk through both layers at end of next row and sc together. Continue to sc the layers together, inserting the hk in the end of each row to the top, in each st across the top and in the opposite end of each row back down to H-Row 1. Leaving the bottom open, fasten off with a long tail for sewing. Lightly stuff head with fiberfill. Set aside.

MUZZLE (make 1):

  1. M-Rnd 1: With white, ch 2; work 6 scs in second ch from hk to form a circle: count 6 scs. Mark the last st with a safety pin.
  2. M-Rnd 2: Working in rnds, not rows, work 2 scs in first st of previous rnd and in each remaining st: count 12 scs. (At end of rnd, remove pin before working in last st. Use same pin to mark last st of new rnd.)
  3. M-Rnd 3: [Sc in next st, work 2 scs in next st] around; remove pin, join with a sl st in first sc of M-Rnd 3: count 18 scs. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing.
  4. Place fiberfill behind muzzle. Center muzzle on front of head over H-Rows 3 to 8. Thread needle with yarn tail and hand-sew the muzzle to the head.
  5. Thread needle with black. Using vertical stitches and referring to photo at right, satin-stitch a nose onto muzzle. Use backstitches to form a mouth.

EYE (make 2): E-Rnd 1: With black, ch 2; work 7 scs in second ch from hk to form a circle, join with a sl st in first sc. Fasten off with a long tail for sewing. Referring to photo for position, hand-sew eyes onto face about 3/4 inch apart.

EAR (make 4):

  1. ER-Row 1: With black, ch 3; sc in second ch from hk, work 4 scs in last ch: count 5 scs.
  2. ER-Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in first st, work 2 scs in each of next 3 sts, sc in last st: count 8 scs.
  3. ER-Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 hdcs in each of next 4 sts, sc in each of last 2 sts: count 12 scs. Fasten off.
  4. With black, sc two ears together along the curved edge the same as for head. Leave a long tail for sewing. Repeat for second ear. Referring to photo for position, hand-sew to top of panda’s head, just behind the joining scs.

BODY (make 2):

  1. B-Rows 1-5: With black, rep H-Rows 1-5.
  2. B-Row 6: Ch 1, turn; work 2 scs in first st, sc across until 1 st remains, work 2 scs in last st: count 16 scs.
  3. B-Row 7: Ch 1, turn; sc across: count 16 scs. Fasten off.
  4. B-Row 8: Turn work. With a white sl knot on hk, insert hk in first st and make 1 sc, sc in each remaining st across: count 16 scs.
  5. B-Rows 9-13: Ch 1, turn; sc across: count 16 scs.
  6. B-Rows 14-15: Ch 1, turn; sc first 2 sts tog, sc across until 2 sts remain, sc last 2 sts tog: count 14,12 scs. Fasten off.
  7. With matching yarn, sc the two body pieces together the same as for head. Lightly stuff body with fiberfill, then sew head to body.

LEG (make 4):

  1. L-Row 1: With black, ch 6, sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch across: count 5 scs.
  2. L-Rows 2-9: Ch 1, turn; sc across: count 5 scs.
  3. L-Row 10: Ch 1, turn; sc first 2 sts tog, sc across until 2 sts remain, sc 2 tog: count 3 scs.
  4. L-Row 11: Ch 1, turn; sc first 2 sts tog, sc in last st: count 2 scs. Fasten off.
  5. With black, sc two legs together the same as for head. Repeat for second leg. Lightly stuff legs with fiberfill. Referring to photo for position, sew the open end of each leg to bottom of body, stitching through both layers.

ARM (make 4):

  1. A-Row 1: With black, ch 5, sc in second ch from hk and each remaining ch across: count 4 scs.
  2. A-Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn; sc across: count 4 scs.
  3. A-Row 6: Ch 1, turn; sc first 2 sts tog, sc last 2 sts tog: count 2 scs. Fasten off.
  4. With black, sc two arms together the same as for head. Repeat for second arm. Lightly stuff arms with fiberfill. Referring to photo for position, sew the open end of each arm to body the same as for legs.

FINISHING: Tie a ribbon around panda’s neck.

FINISHED SIZE: Panda is about 10-1/2 inches high x 7-1/4 inches wide.
