GAUGE: Working in pattern, 18 sts and 27 rows = 4 inches. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Stitches/Techniques Used:

Knit 1 through back of loop: K1tbl:

  • With yarn in back, insert needle from right to left into back of next st and k st.

Slip, slip, knit: SSK:

  • Sl next 2 sts one at a time onto right needle; insert the left needle into fronts of these 2 sts and k them tog.

Ribbing: K1tbl, p 1 rib:

  • Row 1: K 1, * k1tbl, p 1; repeat from * across to last st, k 1.
  • All remaining rows: K 1, * k1tbl the k sts, p the p sts; repeat from * across to the last st, k 1.

DIRECTIONS:

BACK:

  1. Ribbing: Using smaller needles and Pale Sage Green, cast on 79(87,95,103,111,119) sts.
  2. Work k1tbl, p 1 rib until work mea-sures 2(2,2-1/2,2-1/2,3,3) inches, inc 8(8,10,10,10,10) sts evenly across on last row: 87(95,105,113,121,129) sts. Fasten off at end of last row.
  3. Body: Change to larger needles.
  4. Row 1: With Pale Bronze, k across row.
  5. Row 2: K 1, p across to last st, k 1.
  6. Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
  7. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
  8. Row 5: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * across to last st, k 1.
  9. Row 6: Repeat Row 5.
  10. Rows 7-30: Repeat Rows 1-6 four more times.
  11. Rows 31-34: Repeat Rows 1-4. Fasten off at end of Row 34.
  12. Row 35 (RS): Attach Sand Castle and repeat Row 5.
  13. Row 36: Repeat Row 5. Fasten off.

  17. Rows 75-78: Repeat Rows 3-6.
  18. Row 79: K 1, SSK, k across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1: 77(85,93,101,107,115) sts.
  19. Row 80: Repeat Row 2.
  20. Working in established pattern and colors, repeat Rows 79 and 80 23(26, 26,29,32,35) more times. Place remaining 31(33,41,43,43,45) sts on stitch holder.

LEFT FRONT:

  1. Ribbing: Using small­er needles and Pale Sage Green, cast on 39(43,47,51,55,59) sts.
  2. Work k1tbl, p 1 rib until work mea-sures 2(2,2-1/2,2-1/2,3,3) inches, inc 4 sts evenly across on last row to 43 (47,51,55,59,63) sts. Fasten off at end of last row.
  3. Body: Change to larger needles.
  4. Row 1 (RS): With Pale Bronze, k across row.
  5. Row 2: K 1, p across to last st, k 1.
  6. Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
  7. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
  8. Row 5: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * across to last st, k 1.

  20. Neck Shaping: Row 1: K 1, SSK, k across row: 21(22,25,29,29,30) sts.
  21. Row 2: Bind off 9(10,13,14,14,15) sts at the beginning of the row, p across to last st, k 1: 12(12,12,15,15,15) sts.
  22. Row 3: K 1, SSK, k across to last 2 sts, k2tog: 10(10,10,13,13,13) sts.
  23. Row 4: P2tog, p across row to last st, k 1: 9(9,9,12,12,12) sts.

  4. Working in established pattern repeat, k2tog at the end of every k row as before until 22(23,26,30,30,31) sts remain, ending with a WS row.
  5. Neck Shaping: Row 1: Bind off 9 (10,13,14,14,15) sts at beginning of row, k across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1: 12 (12,12,15,15,15) sts.
  6. Row 2: K 1, p across to last 2 sts, p2tog: 11(11,11,14,14,14) sts.
  7. Row 3: K2tog, k across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1: 9(9,9,12,12,12) sts.
  8. Rows 4-5: Repeat Rows 2 and 3: 6(6,6,9,9,9) sts.

  2. Work k1tbl, p 1 rib until work mea-sures 2(2,2-1/2,2-1/2,3,3) inches: 34 (40,42,48,56,62) sts. Fasten off at end of last row.
  3. Sleeve: Change to larger needles and Pale Bronze.
  4. Row 1 (RS): Inc 1, k across row to last st, inc 1: 36(42,44,50,58,64) sts.
  5. Row 2: K 1, p across to last st, k 1.
  6. Row 3: K across row.
  7. Row 4: Repeat Row 2.
  8. Row 5: K 2, * p 1, k 1; repeat from * across.
  9. Row 6: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * across to last st, k 1.
  10. Row 7: Repeat Row 3.

  22. Row 19: With Pale Bronze, repeat Row 3.
  23. Row 20: Repeat Row 2.
  24. Rows 21-90: Continue to work in established pattern and colors (same as for body of sweater), inc at each end of Rows 25, 33, 41, 49, 57, 65, 73, 81 and 89: 58(64,66,72,80,86) sts at end of Row 90.
  25. Rows 91-92: With Sand Castle, repeat Rows 5 and 6, binding off 4(4,5,5, 6,6) at the beginning of each row: 50(56,56,62,68,74) sts. Fasten off.
  26. Rows 93-96: With Pale Bronze, work even in established pattern.
  27. Row 97: K 1, SSK, k across to last 3 sts, k2tog, k 1: 48(54,54,60,66,72) sts.
  28. Row 98: K 1, p across to last st, k 1.
  29. Working in established pattern and colors, repeat Rows 97 and 98 until 2 sts remain, p2tog. Fasten off.
  30. With right sides facing, use matching yarn and yarn or tapestry needle to sew sweater together.

NECKBAND:

  1. With Pale Sage Green and smaller needles, pick up and k 72(76,90,102,102,106) sts (including sts on holders) evenly spaced around the neckline.
  2. Work k1tbl, p 1 rib until work mea-sures 1-1/2 in. Bind off.

LEFT FRONT BAND:

  1. Using Sand Castle yarn and the smaller needles, pick up and k 86(90,92,92,98,102) sts evenly spaced along the right front edge of the sweater.
  2. Row 1: * K 1, p 1; repeat from * across row: 86(90,92,92,98,102) sts.
  3. Row 2: * P 1, k 1; repeat from * across row.
  4. Rows 3-8: Repeat Rows 1 and 2: 86(90,92,92,98,102) sts.
  5. Bind off.

RIGHT FRONT BAND:

  1. Work the same as left front band, only make 5(5,6,6,7,7) buttonholes evenly spaced along band on Row 5.
  2. To make buttonholes, bind off 2 sts for each buttonhole; when working next row, cast on 2 sts over the bound-off sts.

FINISHING:

  1. Use Sand Castle and yarn or tapestry needle to sew buttons corresponding to buttonholes onto left front band.
  2. Use yarn or tapestry needle to weave in all the loose ends.
  3. Warm up with your pretty pastel sweater as temperatures drop and autumn winds blow this fall!

FINISHED SIZE: Chest measurement of sweater is about 40 inches. Changes for sweater with chest measurements of 44, 48, 52, 56 and 60 inches are in parentheses.
