GAUGE: With size G hook, 6 hdcs and 5 rows = 2 inches.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

When working in rounds, do not join unless instructed to. Place marker at end of first rnd and move marker at end of each subsequent rnd.

Finished size: Each doll is about 5 inches wide x 15 inches tall.

DIRECTIONS:

BODY:

  1. Rnd 1: With bright pink or turquoise, ch 2, work 6 scs in second ch from hk, place marker: count 6 scs.
  2. Rnd 2: * Sc in next st, work 2 scs in next st; rep from * around: count 9 scs.
  3. Rnd 3: * Sc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st; rep from * around: count 12 scs.
  4. Rnd 4: * Sc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st; rep from * around: count 16 scs.
  5. Rnd 5: * Sc in each of next 3 sts, work 2 scs in next st; rep from * around: count 20 scs.

  13. H-Rnd 14: Work 2 sts tog around: count 10 sts.
  14. H-Rnd 15: Work 2 sts tog around: count 5 sts. Fasten off. Thread yarn end onto tapestry needle and sew opening closed.

NECK:

  1. N-Rnd 1: With bright pink or turquoise, ch 10, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. Do not turn.
  2. N-Rnds 2-12: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Fasten off. Stuff neck firmly. Thread yarn end onto tapestry needle and sew neck to body over Rnds 20-23. Then sew other end of neck onto bottom of head over Rnds 7-10.
  3. Insert wooden skewer or craft wire through center of head, center of neck and partially into body. Break off pointed end of skewer and push back into place. If using wire, bend ends back to make a small loop and push loop through crocheted neck and back into place.

FEET (make 4):

  1. F-Row 1: With yarn to match beak, ch 2, work 2 scs in second ch from hk, ch 1, turn: count 2 scs.
  2. F-Row 2: Work 2 scs in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 4 scs.
  3. F-Row 3: Work 2 scs in first st, sc in each of next 2 scs, work 2 scs in next st, ch 1, turn: count 6 scs.
  4. F-Row 4: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn: count 6 scs.
  5. F-Row 5: Work 2 scs in first st, sc in each of next 4 scs, work 2 scs in next st, ch 1, turn: count 8 scs.
  6. F-Rows 6-7: Sc in each sc across, ch 1, turn: count 8 scs.
  7. F-Row 8: Work 2 scs in first st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, work 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in next st, sc in next st, work 2 scs in next st, turn: count 10 sts.
  8. F-Row 9: Sl st in first st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, [work (1 dc, 1 tr) in next st] twice, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next st. Fasten off.
  9. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew two feet together with edges matching. Repeat with remaining two feet.

 

LEGS (make 2):

  1. L-Rnd 1: With yarn to match feet, ch 9, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
  2. L-Rnds 2-19: Sc in each st around: count 8 scs. Fasten off at end of Rnd 19.
  3. Stuff each leg firmly.
  4. Sew a leg to back edge of each foot as shown in photo below left.

WINGS (make 4):

  1. W-Row 1: With bright pink or turquoise, ch 2, sc in second ch from hk, ch 1, turn: count 1 sc.
  2. W-Row 2: Work 2 scs in st, ch 1, turn: count 2 scs
  3. W-Row 3: Work 2 scs in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 4 scs.
  4. W-Row 4: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 4 scs.
  5. W-Row 5: Work 2 scs in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st, ch 1, turn: count 6 scs.
  6. W-Row 6: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 6 scs.
  7. W-Row 7: Work 2 scs in next st, sc in each of next 4 sts, work 2 scs in next st, ch 1, turn: count 8 scs.
  8. W-Row 8: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 8 scs.
  9. W-Row 9: Work 2 scs in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, work 2 scs in next st, ch 1, turn: count 10 scs.
  10. W-Rows 10-13: Sc in each st across, ch 1, turn: count 10 scs.

  12. W-Row 15: Work 2 sts tog, work (1 hdc, 1 dc) in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts, work (1 dc, 1 hdc) in next st, work next 2 sts tog. Fasten off.
  13. With matching yarn and tapestry needle, sew edges of two wings together and tack to side of body as shown in photo. Repeat with remaining two wings.

 

OPTIONAL TAIL FEATHERS (make 4 each of bright pink, yellow and turquoise): Ch 17, hdc in third ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off.

With any color yarn, sew one end of all feathers together in a bunch. Sew joined feathers to top of back of bird doll if desired.

FINISHING: Referring to photo for position, sew buttons to head for eyes with matching yarn and tapestry needle.
