Instructions

GAUGE: When working in sc with a size G/6 hook, 7 sc and 7 rows = 2 inches. A slight variation in your gauge will change the size of the bib but will not ruin this project.

Stitches used: Refer to knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

DIRECTIONS:

FACE:

  1. Face Row 1 (RS): With Pink, ch 26; sc in second ch from hk and mark this st with a safety pin; sc in each remaining ch across row: 25 sc.
  2. Face Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 25 sc.
  3. Face Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sk 1 st and sc in each sc to within last 2 sts; sk 1 st and sc in last st: 23 sc.
  4. Face Rows 4-10: Repeat Row 3 for seven more rows, reducing the number of sts by two each row: 9 sc remain after Row 10. Fasten off after Row 10.

BEARD:

  1. Beard Row 1: With right side of Santa’s face facing you, join White with a sl st in marked st (remove pin), ch 1, sc in same st as sl st; * work 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st and sc in next st *; rep from * to * two more times; [sk 1 st and work 5 dc in next st, sk 1 st and sc in next st] twice; rep from * to * three times: 8 shells.
  2. Beard Row 2: Ch 3, turn, work 2 dc in same sp as ch-3; * sk 2 dc and sc in next dc, sk 2 dc and work 5 dc in next sc; rep from * six more times; sk 2 dc and sc in next dc, sk 2 dc and work 3 dc in last sc: 7 shells.
  3. Beard Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in same sp as ch-1; * sk 2 dc and work 5 dc in next sc, sk 2 dc and sc in next dc; rep from * seven more times, ending with last sc in top of turning ch-3; 8 shells.
  4. Beard Row 4: Ch 1, turn; sl st in each of next 3 sts, sc in next dc; * sk 2 dc and work 5 dc in next sc, sk 2 dc and sc in next dc; rep from * six more times; sl st in each of next 3 sts: 7 shells.
  5. Beard Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sl st to center dc of first shell; sk 2 dc and work 5 dc in next sc; * sk 2 dc and sc in next dc, sk 2 dc and work 7 dc in next sc; rep from * three more times; sk 2 dc and sc in next dc, sk 2 dc and work 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts and sl st in next st.
  6. Beard Row 6: Turn, sl st to center dc of first shell; sk 2 dc and work 7 dc in next sc; * sk 3 dc and sc in next dc, sk 3 dc and work 7 dc in next sc; rep from * three more times; sk 2 dc and sl st in next st.
  7. Beard Row 7: Ch 1, turn, sl st to center dc of first shell; * sk 3 dc and work 7 dc in next sc, sk 3 dc and sc in next dc; rep from * three more times; sl st to end of shell. Fasten off.

HAT:

  1. Hatband Row 1: With right side of Santa’s face facing you, join White yarn at upper right side with a sl st around the ch-3 sp at end of Beard Row 2, ch 1, work 2 sc in same space as sl st; sc in end of Beard Row 1, sc in first st of Face Row 1; * sc between next 2 sts of Face Row 1; rep from * 24 times; sc in end of Beard Row 1, work 2 sc in end of Beard Row 2: 31 sc.
  2. Hatband Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 31 sc.
  3. Hatband Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sk first st and sc in each of next 28 sc, sk next st and sc in last sc: 29 sc.
  4. Hatband Row 4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 29 sc. Fasten off.
  5. Hat Row 1: Turn, join Jockey Red with a sl st in last sc of Hatband Row 4, sc in same st as sl st; sk 1 st and sc in each sc to end: 28 sc.
  6. Hat Rows 2-7: Ch 1, turn; sk first st, sc in each sc to end: 22 sc at end of row 7.
  7. Hat Rows 8-10: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 22 sc.

NECKLINE SHAPING:

  1. Right Shoulder Row 1: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of first 8 sc: 8 sc.
  2. Right Shoulder Rows 2-5: Ch 1, turn; sk first st and sc to end: 4 sc at end of row 5.
  3. Right Shoulder Row 6: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 4 sc.
  4. Right Shoulder Row 7: Ch 1, turn; sk first st and sc to end: 3 sc.
  5. Right Shoulder Row 8: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 3 sc.
  6. Right Shoulder Row 9: Ch 1, turn; sk first st and sc to end: 2 sc.
  7. Right Shoulder Row 10: Ch 1, turn; sc in each sc to end: 2 sc.
  8. Right Shoulder Row 11: Ch 1, turn; sk 1 st and sc in next st; ch 45 for tie; sl st in second ch from hk and in each remaining ch back to bib. Fasten off.
  9. Left Shoulder Row 1: With back of bib facing you, join yarn at outside top edge with a sl st, ch 1, sc in same st as sl st; sc in each of next 7 sc: 8 sc.
  10. Left Shoulder Rows 2-11: Repeat Right Shoulder Rows 2-11.
  11. Use tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.

DETAILS:

  1. Mustache (Make two): With White, ch 12; sc in second ch from hk, hdc in each of next 2 chs, dc in each of next 3 chs, tr in each of next 3 chs, dc in next ch, hdc in last ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  2. Eyebrow (Make two): With White, ch 6; sc in second ch from hk and in each ch to end. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  3. Eye (Make two): With Olympic Blue, ch 3, sl st in third ch from hk to form a ring; ch 1, work 7 sc in ring; join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  4. Holly Leaf (Make three): With Emerald Green, ch 8; sl st in second ch from hk, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 4 chs, sl st in last ch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  5. Referring to photo for position, pin facial features and leaves to bib. Use tapestry needle and matching yarn tails to sew pieces in place.
  6. For nose, sew or glue on a 3/4-inch pink pom-pom. For berries, sew or glue on three red 1/4-inch pom-poms.
  7. With Jockey Red, satin-stitch a mouth between two mustache pieces.

FINISHED SIZE: Bib is about 9-3/4 inches wide x 12 inches long, excluding ties.
