Instructions

GAUGE: One square block = 4-3/4 inches square. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Techniques/stitches used: Refer to the knitting/crocheting abbreviations below.

4-tr cluster: * Yo twice, insert hk in st or sp specified in instructions and draw yarn through, [yo, draw yarn through 2 lps on hk] twice; rep from * three more times in same st or sp as before, yo, draw yarn through all 5 lps on hk.

DIRECTIONS: Before you begin, refer to gauge, techniques/stitches used, etc.

FLOWER (make 30):

  1. With any color yarn, ch 6, work 4-tr cluster in sixth ch from hk, ch 5, sl st in same ch, [ch 5, work 4-tr cluster in same ch, ch 5, sl st in same ch] three times: count four 4-tr clusters. Fasten off.
  2. Rep to make five each of Red, Paddy Green, Vibrant Orange, Royal, Bright Yellow and Lavender for a total of 30 flowers.

SQUARE BLOCK:

  1. Rnd 1: Join any color yarn with a sl st in top of any 4-tr cluster of a contrasting flower, ch 7, [work 1 tr between next two 4-tr clusters, ch 4, work (1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc) in top of next 4-tr cluster, ch 4] three times, work 1 tr between next two 4-tr clusters, ch 4, dc in same sp as beg ch-7, ch 1, join with a sl st in third ch of beg ch-7.
  2. Rnd 2: Sl st to next ch-4 sp, ch 3 for first dc, work 3 dcs in same ch-4 sp, [dc in next tr, work 4 dcs in next ch-4 sp, dc in next dc, work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, work 4 dcs in next ch-4 sp] three times, dc in next tr, work 4 dcs in next ch-4 sp, dc in next dc, work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next ch-1 sp, dc in next dc, join with a sl st to top of beg ch-3: count 52 dcs.
  3. Rnd 3: Ch 3 for first dc, work 1 dc in each of next 10 dcs, work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next ch-3 sp, [work 1 dc in each of next 13 dcs, work (1 dc, ch 3, 1 dc) in next ch-3 sp] three times, dc in each of next 2 dcs, join with a sl st to top of beg ch-3: count 60 dcs. Fasten off.
  4. Rep to make five square blocks each of Red, Paddy Green, Vibrant Orange, Royal, Bright Yellow and Lavender yarn using a different contrasting-color flower in each for a total of 30 square blocks.
  5. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

COLOR STRIPS:

  • Lay out all square blocks right side up in six rows with five blocks of the same color border in each row. (The different-color flower centers can be placed randomly.)
  • When pleased with the layout, use tapestry or yarn needle and matching yarn to whipstitch the five blocks in each row together with wrong sides facing, stitching through the back lps only. Rep to make six strips with five square blocks in each strip.

Inside Border:

  1. IB-Rnd 1: With Red strip held lengthwise, right side facing and a Red sl knot on hk, sc in first ch-3 sp in the corner of the strip, * [work 1 sc in each of next 15 dcs, sc in next ch-3 sp, work 2 scs in seam joining blocks, sc in next ch-3 sp] four times, sc in each of next 15 dcs, work (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in corner ch-3 sp, sc in each of next 15 dcs, work (1 sc, ch 1, 1 sc) in next corner ch-3 sp; rep from * around, ending last rep with (1 sc, ch 1) in corner ch-3 sp, join with a sl st to beg sc.
  2. IB-Rnd 2: Ch 3, * work 1 dc in each sc to next ch-1 sp, work 3 dcs in ch-1 sp; rep from * around to beg ch-3, join with a sl st to top of beg ch-3.
  3. IB-Rnds 3-4: Ch 3, work 1 dc in each dc around. Fasten off at the end of IB-Rnd 4.
  4. Rep IB-Rnds 1-4 to add a matching inside border to each of the remaining strips.
  5. Joining: Whipstitch the long edges of Red strip and Vibrant Orange strip together with wrong sides facing and ends matching, using either color yarn and stitching in back lps only. Add the Bright Yellow, Paddy Green, Royal and Lavender strips in same way.

OUTER BORDER:

  1. OB-Rnd 1: With a Red sl knot on hk, sc in any sc, ch 1, sc in each sc around working (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) in each corner ch-3 sp and 1 sc in each seam where strips are joined, join with a sl st in beg sc.
  2. OB-Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around working 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc in each corner ch-3 sp, join with a sl st in beg sc.
  3. OB-Rnd 3: Rep OB-Rnd 2. Fasten off.
  4. Rep OB-Rnds 1-3 using Vibrant Orange yarn instead of Red. Then rep OB-Rnds 1-3 using Bright Yellow, Paddy Green and Royal yarn.

EDGING:

  1. E-Rnd 1: With a Lavender sl knot on hk, sc in any sc, work 1 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in beg sc.
  2. E-Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, * ch 5, sc in next sc; rep from * around, ch 5, join with a sl st in beg sc. Fasten off.
  3. Use tapestry or yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

FINISHED SIZE: Afghan is about 60 inches long x 36 inches wide.
