ch(s) = chain(s)
dc(s) = double crochet(s)

[ ]  = Instructions within brackets are repeated as directed.

Gauge: With size G hook and working in sc, 3.5 sts and 4 rows + 1 inch. With size F hook and working in sc, 4 sts and 4.5 rows = 1 inch. Slight variation in gauge will change finished
size a bit.

Directions

ADULT HAT

With orange, ch 5, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

Round 1: Sc in ring (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 8 more scs in ring, do not join: 9 scs.

Round 2: Work 2 scs in first sc of Round 1 (attach stitch marker to first sc), work 2 scs in each remaining sc around: 18 scs.

Round 3: Work 1 sc in first sc, (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 2 scs in next sc, [work 1 sc in next st, work 2 sc in next st] around: 27 scs.

Round 4: Work 1 sc in first sc, (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 1 sc in next sc, work 2 scs in next st, [work 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st] around: 36 scs.

Round 5: Work 1 sc in first sc, (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, work 2 scs in next st, [work 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, work 2 scs in next st] around: 45 scs.

Round 6: Work 1 sc in first sc, (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 1 sc in each st around: 45 scs.

Round 7: Work 1 sc in first sc, (attach stitch marker to this stitch), work 1 sc in each of the next 3 sts, work 2 scs in next st, [work 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts, work 2 scs in next st] around: 54 scs.

Rounds 15-38: Work 1 sc in each st around: 81 scs.

Round 39: Sl st in each st around: 81 sts. Fasten off.

Stem:

With green, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 12 scs in ring, join with a sl st in first sc: 12 scs.

Round 2: Ch 3, work 1 sc in each st around: 12 scs.

Repeat Round 2 until stem measures about 1-1/2 inches. Sl st in next st. Do not fasten off.

Base of Stem:

Ch 3, dc in same st, [sc in next st, work 2 dcs in next st] around to beginning ch-3, sl st in base of ch-3. Do not fasten off.

Vine:

Ch 15, work 2 dcs in second ch from hk, work 3 dcs in each remaining ch, sl st in beginning ch. Fasten off leaving a 12–inch tail of yarn.

 

NEWBORN HAT

Rounds 1-7: Work Rounds 1-7 (or rounds needed for desired circumference) of adult hat with size F crochet hook: 54 scs.

Rounds 8-31: Work 1 sc in each st around: 54 scs.

Round 32: Sl st in each st around: 54 sts. Fasten off.

Stem:

With green, ch 4, join with a sl st in first ch made to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 1, work 8 scs in ring, join with a sl st in first sc: 8 scs.

Round 2: Ch 1, work 1 sc in each st around: 8 scs.

Repeat Round 2 until stem measures about 1 inch. Sl st in next st. Do not fasten off.

Base of Stem:

Ch 3, dc in same st, sc in next st, work 2 dcs in next st] around to beginning ch-3, sl st in base of ch-3. Do not fasten off.

Vine:

Ch 15, work 2 dcs in second ch from hk, work 2 dcs in each remaining ch, sl st in beginning ch. Fasten off leaving a 12–inch tail of yarn.

FINISHING (for both):

  1. With matching yarn, stitch base of stem to center top of hat.
  2. Push on the center top of stem to create a slight depression in the stem.
  3. Weave in all loose ends.
  4. Turn 1 inch around bottom edge of hat up twice.

Finished Size: Newborn hat shown has a circumference of about 16 inches, adult hat about 24 inches. Hat size can easily be altered.

Tip: To vary cap size:

  1. Measure the circumference of the wearer.
  2. Work rounds, increasing number of stitches until distance around outer edge is equal to the desired hat circumference.
  3. Work rounds (without increas-ing) until hat is desired length.
