GAUGE:

5 rows = 21⁄2 in.; each strip = 41⁄2 in. wide

Note: To change colors, work the last stitch to within one step of completion; hook new color and draw through loops on hook. Cut dropped cover and work over both ends.

PENCIL (make seven):

  1. With black, ch 2.
  2. Row 1 (right side): 2 sc in second ch from hk.
  3. Row 2: ch3 (counts as first dc, now and throughout), turn; 2 dc in first sc, 3 dc in last sc: 6 sts.
  4. Row 3: ch3, turn; dc in first dc and in next 4 dc, 2 dc in last st, change to tan: 8 dc.
  5. Rows 4-7: ch3, turn; dc in first dc, dc in each dc across to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, change to yellow: 16 dc.
  6. Row 8: ch3, turn; dc in next dc and in each dc across.
  7. Row 9: ch3, turn; dc in next 2 dc, FPdc around next dc, (dc in next 4 dc, FPdc around next dc) twice, dc in last 2 dc.
  8. Row 10: ch3, turn; dc in next dc, BPdc around next st, (dc in next 4 dc, PBdc around next st) twice, dc in last 3 dc.
  9. Row 11: Ch3, turn; dc in next dc, FPdc around next st, (dc in next 4 dc, FPdc around next st) twice, dc in last 2 dc. Repeat Rows 10 and 11 until strip mea- sures 40 in. from point, ending with Row 11; change to gray to start eraser.
  10. Row 1: ch2 (counts as first hdc, now and throughout), turn; hdc in next dc and in each st across: 16 hdc.
  11. Row 2: ch1, turn; sc in BLO of each sc across.
  12. Row 3: ch1, turn; sc in FLO of each sc across.
  13. Row 4: ch2, turn; hdc in BLO of each sc across; change to pink.
  14. Rows 5-7: ch3, turn; dc in next st and in each st across.
  15. Row 8: ch1, turn; sc in first 2 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc, tr in next 4 dc, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, sc in last 2 dc; finish off.

ASSEMBLY:

  1. Alternating point and eraser ends, with wrong sides of two strips together and working in the ends of rows, join tan with sc to first yellow row at pointed end, ch1, sc in last row of eraser, ch1 sc in next row of first strip, (ch1, sc in next row of second strip, ch1, sc in next row of first strip) across to last row of eraser on first strip; fasten off.
  2. Repeat until all pencils are joined.
